Far cry from the one and done when this kind of $ is available in college...

That's rude.
I get by time he becomes eligible, if that happens....we won't have a $million plus dollars left to spend but still...
Like to hear his thoughts on why he's doing what he's doing...
blowing off the NBA dream, I guess at least for this year....why?
gambling on the eligibility ruling...does he have inside info expecting to be approved?
why not return to the Gophers? Niko and Thorson suggest the portal is better for him?
Lots of questions....

That's exactly why it's not rude. If they find out on say July 25th that they get an extra year, the # of spots and $$ available will be limited. If he doesn't go in the portal his only option would be to come back to MN, who might not have a roster spot much less any $$.

That, and he'd have no leverage to get paid anything if his only option were to return to MN - this is a no-brainer. Kinda surprised it hadn't happened sooner, tbh.

Who was that poster that everyone was mocking that he's playing another year?

Is everyone still laughing?
Well, I think we've known for awhile now that this truly is his plan. Also, evidenced by his teammates that are out of eligibility that are in the portal too.

Except, if you are the Gophers, I would assume you want him to be a Gopher? If you do...then you work a plan with him if he becomes eligible...that this is what we can offer...(making it attractive) you got a booster willing to fund it or do a matching plan and everybody is wooohoo and contributes making the risk minimal.

The only way, with 15 roster spots you don't have one available for Garcia is if he said I'm not playing here. I hate you. And then...you still might save a spot for him.

What if he can get 4 to 5 million somewhere else, which I'm sure he can.

True, but they were mocking the guy saying he is playing another year.

He's not yet playing another year.
Plus the guy said it was a done deal, to Minnesota.

Let's see if he's actually getting approved for another year before anyone claims any bragging rights.

Well, Dawson apparently thinks he is.

Let me guess, you were one of the ones mocking him.

Quite a few players with no eligibility left are trying for a waiver: Dainja, Dickinson and a number of others. Just in case the rules change.

Lots of players who can make a lot in college that they can’t make in the pros!

I mean if you’re not on a mock draft or any, why not make a a half a million or more and stay in school.

Waiting for career college players, after they sue the NCAA for blocking their right to earn a living!

I gotta feed my family!

They were waiting for Robby Hummel to give them cover...

SHIT! Latrell is on the board. 🏀

Apparently he's appealing based on missing much of 2021-2022 exacerbated by the trauma of playing for Ben Johnson. I like his odds.

That's really not a thing anymore...is it? More like stay at the collegiate pro level and maybe take a class or two.

He won't get that much. None of these old guys will because no one is going to hold that much aside for something that might not happen. If he had normal eligibility left, maybe he'd have gotten in that ballpark.

It isn't about holding the spot. It's about holding the money it would require.
If the Gophers want Garcia...if the Gophers think there is any possibility Garcia could be eligible to play...then a roster spot and the money to pay him are pretty solvable problems come July, August, September, October, November.
Likely, he has to be in school for the team he plans to play for. Doubt they let guys play who are not taking classes.
Working with a million unknowns here but Garcia as a Gopher is pretty dang solvable.
You talk to your heavy hitters..."Hey, if Garcia becomes eligible will you help us pay him?"
The money would not be an issue...boosters know him...know he stayed...know he averages 20 points.
His opportunity to go else where...depends on when the ruling comes.

I think he had to in order to protect his value. It is likely that he wants to stay with the Gophers but he understands that Niko has to fill out his squad and can't wait for the ruling on Dawson. What if the Gophers don't have a 1 million + slot available by that time?

The likelihood that the Gophers or any other team fill fifteen roster spots is low. The issue is money and eligibility for Garcia not the squad filling out.
