Dan Barreiro, Paul Allen, Matt Thomas and Joe Schmit Comment on TCF Bank Stadium

Lots of the season left to pursue many story angles...there's never a lack of stuff, just a matter of time/willingness to go out and get...now, keep in mind on the Freshmen angle, guys are off-limits to reporters unless they have officially played in a game.

I'm not talking about the players; I'm talking about freshmen students/fans who will be alumni, who will be bringing their kids to games because of their memories attending games, etc, etc.

And I agree with these most recent posts - you could have asked anybody else on here what Barreiro and PA would say when asked these questions and nine times out of ten we would have gotten it exactly right verbatim.

Barriero wouldn't take time to look down from his pedestal to examine Gopher football from any other viewpoint than his usual angry contrarian stance.

PA knows nothing and I mean NOTHING about college football, like he knows anything about the "culture". If he wasn't the voice of the Vikings, he should be the next up on the KFAN chopping block since his show is basically unlistenable since Puffy was dismissed.

Schmidt couldn't resist the alcohol cheap shot at the end even though it has little to nothing to do with the question.

Thomas' said nothing my butcher couldn't have told me.

Its too bad Mark Rosen didn't chime in. Although he is associated with KFAN, he actually does pay attention to the gophers and knows who the players are, he might even go to most of the games. Rosen's sports sunday the other night from the stadium interviewed players and Brew, that was pretty cool.

We all know the vikings basically own KFAN, so that is who those guys pay attention to, youre not going to get anything but gopher pessimism from them until we go to the rose bowl.....actually it will be really annoying to listen to them jump on the bandwagon, with the rest of this town, when we do go to the rose bowl in a couple of years....thats right, I said it.

Last night on his show, Rosen downplayed the significance the stadium would have on recruiting. Paraphrase: Michigan, OSU and PSU all have nicer stadiums with over 100k people. So recruits are not going to pick MN over those schools.

I have to pile on...

Not only was the idea flawed, but so was the execution. Barrerio and PA no very little about college football and the Gophers. That I know for a fact. Go to Barrerio for comments about the fledging newspaper industry, not college football. Go to PA for comments about the Vikings, not college football. The idea makes no sense. Now for the execution...the question was loaded. If you've spent only 5 minutes listening to either, you'll understand their angle. Giving them an open layup to spew their negativity reflects just as poorly on Doogie as it does on Barrerio and PA.

Put it another way...Jim Rome is well known for his dislike of all things soccer. What do you think his response would be to a question pertaining to the 2010 World Cup? Is he a good, credible source for that question? Of course not. He knows nothing about soccer, wants to keep it that way, and would go out of his way to bash the sport in his response. So why is Barrerio a good, credible source for a loaded question about Gopher Football?

1. Doogie did say he mailed a number of people but the only responses he got were from these slanted viewpoints. What does that tell you? Many don't care. Many think if I don't say something negative I'm not being fair and balanced. Those with a negative response to a question are more likely to respond that those with neutral or positive responses.

Questions I would like to see asked:

1. Bud Grant: Why have you not been actively involved with the UofM? What is needed to get you more openly involved?

2. Parents of Players: How do you view the recruiting process? How have your interactions with the coaching staff gone? How has you son's experience gone so far?

3. Former Players: Do you want to be involved with the program? Do you feel your involvement is encouraged? Do you feel the current staff has reached out to you? Do you like the idea of an M Clube room at TCF Stadium?

4. Upper Classmen: What degree are you working on? Are you on track to graduate? Do you have a hard time balancing athletics and academics? Do you maintain contact with players that have graduated? What do they tell you once their football days are done?

I think the GopherHole staff does a great job, but not all stories work out and are better left on the cutting room floor. When only a few, mostly negative, responses came back, the story probably shouldn't have been published.

Wow, And I Wonder Why Minnesota Sports Fans Are So Negative About Their Teams

I actually feel sorry for Minnesotans who don't travel to other cities and see legitimate sports media at work. For a market the size of the Twin Cities, the sports media are a total embarrassment. Paul Allen's thoughts on Gopher football? Unbelievable...

I love that Doogie still thinks bringing in an "objective" opinion is valuable or wanted. Try again Darren!

agreed. doogie gets a failing mark again.

objective. they were about as objective as sid is when he is lecturing us about his close personal friends. when i was reading the blips, i laughed at the so called objective ax being sharpened. the article was pretty much a swing and a miss.

usual MSP media bile. good point above about only missing reusse, but they should have added dark star for the true "objective" viewpoint by the gallows crew. their opinions are consistent though, allowing them their usual anti homer disassociation. fits the usual MSP mold though. start negative, and can only go up from there.

Well said on all points.

I'm kind of surprised of the comments about this piece. It's a common debate - talking about the media being negative...and instead of speculating, Doogie went right to the source (s). Let's remember, the people on this board are the die-hards. We'd all probably still have season tickets for the next 10, 25, 50+ years - regardless of how the team does or where they play. We are the minority. How many season ticket holders did we have at the Dome, 25K or so? That's our hard core fan base that will always support the team. The other 1/2 of The Bank, will be people excited about the Stadium, being outdoors, the hype, etc. That means if we don't do well, they get cold outside, or just can't ration spending the $ for a long period of time...they could bolt at any point.

That why this is a fan message board - because we love the Gophers, most unconditionally. The media needs to report both sides.

your sample was flawed, and the test results reflected it. dont waste your or our time defending doogies approach. the limited response he received would not even qualify as data for a columnist, let alone a reporter.

contrary to what rosen thinks or said, i don't believe most who truly follow gopher football feel or have expressed that the new stadium alone will be the final answer to year-in-year-out top-flight recruiting and returning gopher football to its former glory. i would guess that the majority understand that has to be a combination of 21st century, big-time college football facilities (finally we can say "check" on that part) AND consistent winning that will allow minnesota to catch back up to the michigan, psu & osu's of the big ten.

the consistent winning part still has to be achieved and i believe the program will get their sooner rather than later, but it absolutely can not be denied by the often non-native minnesotan gopher haters in the mpls media that the world-class facilities - read: stadium & training facilities - portion of the equation was probably missing even before they moved out of memorial, which was in pretty bad shape its last decade or so. the on-campus facilities (stadium & top flight training) portion of the equation was a bigger thorn in the heel of the gopher football program than any of the anti-gopher haters (read barreiro, PA, matt thomas, etc) will ever admit publicly. if they did it would ruin their "bit".

Dan Barreiro is complaining

about the gophers again, syracuse was horrible and it was a bad win and was unimpressive, the gophers win and are opening a new stadium and yet he complains AGAIN on the radio. Just called the win devastating and it would have been much more devastating if they lost.

I think they should revolk the press credentials from some of these characters so they can wish they were inside TCF and also have something else to complain about.

They are trying to strike a balance...simple as that...no reason to take away press credentials...JG should've/could've balanced things out, but I know that he was in NY at the U.S. Open, so he may not have seen the game...But, and you can read my recap from Sat. afternoon, there are parts of the team you can pick apart (O-line, clock management, play calling, did Gray deserve a series?, lack of def. adjustments from 1st qtr to 2nd qtr, although it was nice to see stuff was adjusted at the half).
Didn't hear what Barreiro had to say, but maybe he went down some of these paths.

Man, tough crowd Doogie. Lotta cranky old folks up in this piece.

Doogie, isn't it embarrassing that the expert they bring on to discuss the team spends the first segment discussing WOMEN'S TENNIS, and didn't even watch the game? It's just an abject embarrassment. I understand the Vikings are more popular, but my god, this is an historic week, and you can talk about WOMEN'S TENNIS later on!!! I'm seriously just furious at KFAN.

That seems like a silly thing to get furious about. Not every programming decision is made with the intent of slighting the program somehow.

You seem to care a lot about the criticism. This is what about your 33rd post complaining about people complaining?

You an intern there, just trying to get a job or to keep one?:)

Why even worry about it? It's a terrible sports station that is part of a brutal collection of sports journalism in this market. Some of them may be able to write a pretty sentence or have a good radio voice, but there are very few people in this market that know jack shit about sports. And those that do know something about sports only know about a specific sport (IE: Reusse and baseball).

doogie – PLEASE! kfan is not going to hire you back. just accept it already! there is absolutely no need for you to continue wearing “knee pads” for the d-bag barreiro's of the world. seriously, the way some kowtow to abject failure media types like dan barreiro & pat reusse in this town is embarrassing and rather pathetic.

also, justin gaard (sp)?!? please get that no talent, iowa hogeye grad off the air. i understand kfan is trying to save money, but that two-bit hack is another embarrassment to the station. he is considered on-air talent these days?! and you are not sure if iowa hogeye grad justin gaard (sp) even watched the gopher game?! what do you think. then he shouldn't be commenting on the gophers football program at all since when he does he always does it through his yellow-colored hogeye glasses.

finally, something tells me d-bag barreiro didn't watch the game either, yet he is given a pedestal each day to tear the program and coach brewster down. why?! the station directors a kfan are a joke and do a complete disservice to the minneapolis/st. paul college sports community with their horrible and often slanted, negative coverage.

Ok - for the most part, I've kept my mouth shut on this thread (with the exception of my one post), but this is completely out of line. Bronko - I think you add a lot to the board, and love that you bleed maroon and gold - but there is no need to make personal attacks at one of our writers. I don't know why you are all shooting the messenger here, Doogie simply used his contacts in the media (which the rest of the staff at GH doesn't have) to get a few opinions. If you hate their opinions, fine. You're entitled to your opinions, just as they are. Do I love their opinions? Not really, but it's still interesting to hear what they say. Contact the subjects in the interview, not the person who was simply the messenger.

That would be like me interviewing a kid that said they hated the Gophers, and you attacking me for it. That's what the interviewee said.

If you don't like this piece, there are many ways of debating it like an adult, rather than going to insult the writer's integrity, appearance, intentions, etc.

GL - fair enough. perhaps the "knee pad" comment was a bit over-the-line and could have been left out. feel free to remove that post if you feel it is appropriate. i just get very tired of the uninformed gopher haters (many from out of town) in this town and their personal apologists.

Thanks, Broko - I appreciate that. All of our guys work very hard for very little...so getting ripped on the board is not so fun. I too get sick of the haters...but the only way to shut them is to win!

"I too get sick of the haters...but the only way to shut them is to win!"

Or as respectfully as I can suggest, not give them additional forums to to spread their "hate"; which is really all this conversation has been about.

exactly. everyone knows barriero's bit, everyone knows reusse's bit, everyone knows PA's bit, etc. as iceland12 said they really don't need another pulpit from which to spew their lame b.s.

the thing i find really weak is the "wink, wink" attitude media personalities take towards each other in this town (and perhaps it is like this in other cities around the country) where they are so afraid to ever go "against the flow" and not agree with some of the self-appointed, blow-hard sports media king-pins. when it comes down to it barriero knows as much about sports as the coffee table in my living room. his only interest on his show is to interview his man-crush, author vince flynn as many times as possible. meanwhile PA is literally a vikings robot and dan cole is just all over the place with no real show format and almost refuses to discuss anything sports related. why again is KFAN allowed to call itself a sports-talk radion station?

matt thomas......WHO??

I just think the bunker mentality around here is a little silly. Getting histrionic about every slight--real or perceived-in the media is a good way to wear yourself out.
