Current 2023 Scholarship outlook

4 open spots. I'd be looking at some PWO as possible scholarships. Maybe 2 more transfers in and 2 PWO.

Kesich and LeCaptain would seem like locks to get 2 of the 4 open scholarships right now. So that leaves 2 spots at the moment with a likelihood we may see more action after spring ball ends. Will be interesting to see how they use those spots.

After seeing the spring game, I’ve got to believe Kesich has a scholarship. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Jordan Nubin (RB) has earned one. Current count is that there are 4 available scholarships, but I’m betting only 2—unless and until further transfers out.

Kesich is a given along with LeCaptain. The linebacker/end from Burnsville will be getting one someday. Max Grand , Quentin Redding would be others in line for scholarships from the walk on category.
 

Yeah, I just haven't marked them since it's a year to year thing (I believe) and we only really hear about it when they first get the scholarship. If we get to the season and are under 85, then we know that some of the previous walkon scholarships were renewed.

Remind me please, what is the slash on the final year? If they take a redshirt?

I guess that is technically possible for him to do here, but would assume that won't happen with him already playing the last four seasons (FCS covid year I believe was a reduced spring season in 2021).

Yeah, I add the slash if they can still take a redshirt. As far as I can tell, he hasn't used it (but I could be wrong), so he could use it here if he wanted.

We currently will have 52 scholarship players returning next year. With the current recruiting class of 21 and 8 transfers, that would leave us at 81 scholarships, meaning we need 4 transfers in to get to the scholarship limit.

That also doesn't take into account any walk-ons that were given scholarships. These are the walk-ons that'll be here in 2023 that have previously gotten scholarships:

Completely agree. I would think that puts the staff in a great position of strength for recruiting purposes; they can really focus on which position groups they want to improve. Anyone know the last time we had a similarly small class of expiring eligibility?

I mean I’m sure transfers will happen and such, but great spot to start from!

2024 guys can technically still be class of 2019 guys. Not sure if any are, or if they're all class of 2020 guys who defacto redshirted during the covid year.

(2019 - redshirt, 2020 - covid free year, 2021 - 1, 2022 - 2, 2023 - 3, 2024 - 4)

Point being, if they haven't played much could also simply decide to retire from football rather than uproot their whole lives, friends, gf's, etc. from the last five years, to go to some one-off place just to play for one year.

We have ninth year players these days. You can throw standard wisdom on eligibility right out the window!
