Congratulations to Mark Coyle on the successful hire

Holy Crap! I'm a Fraud!

This was about how he wasn't owning the situation.

Can I like Coyle now despite not liking how he handled the situation then?

And I posted this just prior to that before the decision was made on Claeys.
Point then was he had to choose his coach. Don't take a mulligan by keeping the same guy for 2-3 years and then ask to hire your "first coach".
Coyle seemed to agree by selecting his first coach in his first year.

PJ was flat out a great hire, but any competent AD would have hired him. He was at the top of all potential coach lists at the time.

Again, be happy that we have a president and BOR that are willing to fund hiring great coaches at the U. That is the biggest thing that changed in the last 3 years.

You're correct that any competent AD would have hired Fleck. But very few of them would have had the ability to land him. Fleck has stated more than a few times that his admiration for Coyle played a significant role in his decision to come to the U.

Fleck wants it all: a great university; a first class city and state for his family to live in; strong support from the administration and BOG; a large and enthusiastic fan base; and a great relationship with his AD who buys into the culture he wants to establish and who is willing to give him all the rope and time he needs to build his program.

The evidence seems to indicate that Fleck loves Coyle. That's good enough for me and most other Gopher fans. But apparently not for the dozen or so haters in GopherHole who show up in every Coyle thread to bitch about stuff that mean very little to the rest of us.

I see, you have zero interest in addressing the actual question. I wonder why?

And you have zero interest in recognizing that soliciting funds for Universities is a total team effort involving many people within the athletic department, the administration, and the alumni organizations. Nobody is buying the notion that Mark Coyle can't raise money for the U's Athletics Department.

Gophers Shatter Fundraising Records on Give to the Max Day

On Thursday, supporters of University of Minnesota athletics helped raise more than two million dollars in commitments as part of Give to the Max Day.

"We're so thankful for all of our donors to the Golden Gopher Fund," said athletics director Mark Coyle. "With Give to the Max Day, it's such a special day for our department. For us to raise the type of money we do - it's awesome to find people who believe in our student-athletes and believe in our 25 programs."

The total figure of $2.07 million represents a 262 percent increase in fundraising from Give to the Max Day 2017, which in turn was a 252 percent increase from the prior year. More than 300 individuals donated to the effort, including 12 major gifts which each mark a commitment of $50,000 or more. Other notable donations included 49 donors who will have an engraved brick located within the Athletes Village complex, and 209 donors using crowdfunding.

Mark Coyle - Boise State

Mark Coyle was named Director of Athletics at Boise State University on Dec. 1, 2011.
Since his arrival, the department has reached new heights under his strategic plan -- centered on providing a nationally-competitive, broad-based program focused on developing student-athletes and staff to be leaders academically, athletically and in the community.

Known for his success in fundraising, Coyle enhanced revenue to the department with the successful implementation of the Priority Point System for the Bronco Athletic Association. All told, the Bronco Athletic Association has raised more than $40 million since his arrival, including multiple seven-figure gifts and a $12.5 million naming gift from Albertsons to name the football stadium Albertsons Stadium.

Mark Coyle - University of Kentucky

Prior to joining Boise State, Coyle served in several roles in the athletics department at University of Kentucky, first as an associate athletics director in fundraising and development. He was quickly promoted to senior associate athletics director for external affairs, a position he held for four years before being named deputy director of athletics.

At University of Kentucky, Coyle successfully raised more than $140 million in annual donations and capital pledges and served as a sport administrator for multiple teams, including men’s basketball, volleyball, and men’s and women’s golf.

Let's name all of the silver-tongued Gopher AD's who we loved to hear from in public rather than the coaches of the the major (or even minor sports) at the U:

1963-71: Marshall J. Ryman
1971-88: Paul Giel
1989-91: Rick Bay
1992-95: McKinley Boston
1995-99: Mark Dienhart
1999-02: Tom Moe
2002-12: Joel Maturi
2012-15: Norwood Teague
2016-: Mark Coyle

I will start. I think most people would have to agree Mark Dienhart and Tom Moe had pretty good public profiles and were good speakers. However, I don't think either one accomplished much during their time as AD's. Paul Giel also had a good public profile but I don't remember much about his public speaking. I think most people would agree that he was a disaster as an AD.

Despite his poor public speaking skills, I am going to ride with Mark Coyle over every AD going back to Marsh Ryman who didn't do much at all with a National Champion and Rose Bowl winning football team under the previous AD. What Coyle has over them all is a competitive nature that refuses to accept mediocrity and a drive to hire the best coaches he can and give them whatever support they need to succeed. I will take that anytime over an AD who has the ability to impress and entertain Gopher fans with their oratorical skills.
Best AD in Minnesota history. Hands down.

I wonder if there is one person in charge of that team for raising $ for the AD? Has that team finished the AV fundraising effort? How’s that going? Why are you avoiding the question too and posting articles from 6 years ago to shift the blame and now a bio?

If I have learned one thing on GH it is that being on the other side of your opinions is the place I want to be

Yep, I'm the one who appears unhinged, Spoofin.:p Keep sputtering.

PJ was flat out a great hire, but any competent AD would have hired him. He was at the top of all potential coach lists at the time.

Which is why Coyle should get even more credit. Why would someone at the top of all potential coach lists come to Minnesota....the place where coaching careers have gone to die.

Fleck wasn't going to take that chance without an AD he respected and trusted.

Back at the same place. Coyle hired Fleck, so he is the best AD in Gopher history. sure.
It doesn't have to be black or white. You can give Coyle credit for his coaching hires, but still have legitimate questions about some of the other aspects of his job.
Why does it have to be all or nothing? that is not the way the real world works.

People can be really good at one aspect of their job, but still be less-than-perfect at other aspects of their job. does anyone dispute that?

I think we're going to have to change the cliche from "drinking the kool-aid" to "drinking the Coyle-Aid."

We're going to keep doing it until not one of the usual haters in GopherHole shows up to tell us what a crummy public speaker Coyle is, and how terrible it was for him to publicly say the Gopher's football culture needed to be changed when he introduced Fleck at his initial press conference.

Time will tell Mrs. Coyle. Time will tell.

Started out referring to him as snake.

This year started referring to him as our snake.

I now refer to him as our Athletic Director. Rough start with a lot of us but he has followed his compass. Not sure what the "vision thing" is for him but am encouraged overall.
you had it right the first time. If he has a compass, it's not based on the cardinal compass we all know.

Your ignorance as to some of our previous ADs is really glaring, but since it fits your agenda, run with it. Our lot isn't exactly a murderers row. Still isn't, but there are men on this list that dealt with far more difficult situations and did more for the University than Mark Coyle has done so far. I doubt he'll come close to what Tom Moe accomplished even if he's here for another 20 years, and that's a good thing that he'll never have to deal with what Moe solved.

This thread is evidence that the FB program at least is going in the right direction. Jury's obviously still out on the AD but seems GH is pretty solid behind Coach.

Progress.

Yes, and his name is not Mark Coyle. Fundraising is a part of the AD's job, but not all, and it may surprise you to learn that he has a staff under him to help him with various duties including fundraising.

You may want to review this forum for threads in the time frame of the scandal and soon after that and recall how Coyle was viewed on here. There was even a joke about how a certain poster treated every shot at Coyle as a “bat signal” noted in that he was in the minority. You can claim I made that statement up all you want, but I feel very confident in that statement - the majority of folks on here didn’t approve of Coyle at that time. The fact they do now is what I find comical. But hey, Cruze agreed with you.
I don’t care if you feel confident in the statement. It still doesn’t make it true.

a few blowhards hating Coyle does not equal the majority of people thinking he is bad.

And your desire for it not to be true doesn’t make it untrue either dude. In fact, you are just making up that it was only a few. I stand by my statement, without hesitation. Cheers.

I never said it wasn’t true. Just pointing out you are making stuff up that is in no way provable or obvious and claiming it to be truth

I’m not “making up” anything. I simply have a better memory than you of that situation.

Yes, but if we follow that logic then ultimately the Board of Regents are in charge of fundraising for the athletic department.

I would guess by far the two biggest things that have pissed off Gopher fans about Coyle are the two sex scandals, the football one, which was used to fire Claeys and hire Fleck, and the basketball one, in which Pitino was not fired but in which Lynch was kicked out of school and it essentially tanked what was otherwise going to be a great season.

Is anyone mad about Lynch? He had a bad history prior to that and was on a very short leash.

Mark Coyle also had the J Robinson drug thing on week 1 of his job, I think he handled that quite well.

Some people could be mad that he didn't try harder to stick up for Lynch and prevent him from being kicked off the team or out of school.

I don't believe there were any criminal charges brought up against Lynch in Minn? Just a lot of rumors/hearsay. Let's not get back into it. It's over

So, in other words, until you have unanimous agreement on an internet message boards with your subjective assessment of an administrator who has numerous complex aspects to his job, including but not limited to hiring football coaches?

This year, my opinion about him changed. Last year, I thought he was a coward, a liar, and a terrible public speaker. This year, I think he is a coward, a liar, and a terrible public speaker who seems to have made a pretty good football hire.

I just view these anti Coyle posts as being from the pro Claeys crowd. Really, "a pretty good football hire"???? Duh?? Do you really think so???

Yes I do think so, which is why I said so.

My thoughts on Coyle have nothing to do with pro Claeys. I am anti-dishonesty and anti-leaders creating a leadership void during a crisis and trying to hide behind others.

You literally said most people thought he was bad.
That is making stuff up.

No, I literally said at a time not long ago (as in not at this time as that was the point) that the majority of people on here had a poor opinion of him.

You literally said I was making that up, then said you didn’t say it was untrue (even tho you said it was only a few people at the same time ?), then again said I was making it up.

Again, I invite you to review the threads on here from during and soon after the scandal and then get back to me. The new platform has a great search feature.

Yes, it does. Less than a minute this time as I'm getting better at it.. Here's part of a pathetic farewell from a while ago I found. You literally lie every time you come back here and post according to this. (I also kind of feel bad because you're not giving me any credit for educating you about the power of research.). How many posts since #10,784? Awful lot of lying for someone who keeps attacking Coyle and PJ for being dishonest.

"Well, the PJ worshippers win. This is my post # 10,784 and it will be my last."

Did you find the part where I said everyone was mean to me? You claimed that many times. You really need to find a new hobby. Following me around isn’t that exciting Mully.

This is close enough for my purposes. If no hearts were broken, I'm taking it as everyone was mean to you. Actually I have several hobbies. This is simply a diversion whenever your passive aggressive crap and self-righteous behavior once again becomes too much to ignore. I do like the sniveling "my goal has never been to be popular" part though. You are so noble.

"I don't expect this to break any hearts as my goal has never been to be popular on here."

Sure Mully: Calling PJ is a Windbag is "close enough" to saying he is a bad coach; and saying that I don't expect others to be heartbroken if I stop posting is "close enough" to me saying people are mean. It is tough to wrong when you can draw ridiculous conclusions like that.

As I have said, you are wacko and unhinged. You need new 'distractions'. Being obsessed with me (and you most certainly are) is not healthy. Get a life dude.

You are just making stuff up. Even if I went back and found threads positive or negative about Coyle from the winter of 2016, it still wouldn’t come close to proving or disproving your point.

You can make up fake statistics.
I’m just point out to the group that you made it up.
If you have a problem with that (you clearly do) you’re going to have to get over it.

STOP IT. STOP IT. STOP IT.

This is like watching two drunks argue very loudly in a bar, and everyone else just wants them to shut up or for the bouncer to throw them out.

Stop the pointless arguments. The referee is not going to step in and declare a winner.

Both of you Just stop posting and go back to your narcissistic hell that you rot in when you're not posting here.
