Conference Championship Game Thread

IDK......I still think winning conference championships is a big deal.

It’s nice but maybe kind of silly when there will be 4 teams from the same conference being promoted to the playoff

Is there a similar system in any other sport? Maybe like winning a qualifier round?

It could be worse for Penn St. They just need a turnover or something to get an extra possession. They are sticking in it.

3 NFC North teams are likely to make the NFL playoffs...

NCAA Basketball and Hockey?

My understanding is they are similar situations, the winners of those conferences are autoqualifiers (but no byes). Nice to get that trophy but not relevant to the playoff outcome except in terms of the seeding. Are there any other leagues that have this type of format. Does the NFC West have a championship game, for example.

I'm specifically pointing out that both NCAA basketball and hockey have championship games which are typically played against teams that are also going to be playing in the national championship tournaments.

All about whether or not conference championships matter or not. Seems to me that teams in all three of these sports care about conference championships. Why wouldn't they?

Ok, yes in past years it WAS a big deal. Now, the closest analogy would be the NFC North/NFL divisions = Big Ten. Would that be fair, or am I way off base? It’s nice, it’s an accomplishment and an acknowledgement of regular season success but I’d argue the significance has been diluted to a huge degree.

Every game and achievement and personal record is important to a competitor. I’m strictly talking about whether we need conference championship games or tournaments to name a conference champion. Oregon wins, Penn State, Indiana, and Ohio State get in; no risk of injuries.

I don't think those are anywhere near comparable. There's only four teams in the NFC North.

As I said.....do NCAA basketball and hockey teams care about conference championships? I think so. Believe fans care too. Banners are hung for conference championships.

Putting numbers of teams aside (the Big Ten is absurdly large - another anomalous development).

The second point, I’m not sure what you mean. Of course it’s important to players and fans of those teams. The significance of this game tonight OR PSU is lessened and is much less interesting to an average sports fan because both teams are going forward. There is little intrigue.

I don't think people care that much about the Big ten tournament championship for hockey. It's pretty meaningless, at least for the Gophers.

Does SMU go for 2? I say no. They're the better team right now. Should win in OT.
