They can't. Nor can the AD hire anyone they want. There are limits. They can't hire criminals. They have to pass drug tests. Background checks. And in most cases you can't hire direct family members.
Actually Ryan doesn't have a decent resume. If it is that good get a job as an assistant at UNC or Indiana. Then apply for the HC here when dad retires. I'd be all for that.
Part of why we wanted KIll was because of his assistants. Flip doesn't have those or offered up a real weak team - Norwood didn't approve. Including his son. If his assistant staff is weak we don't want him - old legend or not. Beef it up and come back.
And Kill didn't try to hire family. In fact even with his seizures he had to get special permission to just have his wife drive him on recruiting trips WITHOUT PAY. Was a number of write ups about that.
Where my wife works - you can't hire family members - it is really common and reasonable.
Obviously, you can't hire criminals and you need to do background checks. Nearly all coaches when hired can bring in whatever assistants. In my Kill reference, there is no way he would of taken the job if the Maturi said he couldn't bring his own guys in. Yes, you are right, Flip doesn't have his "own guys" but he should be able to put together a staff of people he knows and trusts.
Not sure how you can say he doesn't have a decent resume started. In his five years since his days at the U, he coached one year for the U and four years in the highest level of basketball in the world. He is not a bench coach, but I would guess he has done more than stare at a computer screen. I'm sure he participates in coaches meetings, assists in coaching plans, etc. He may have gotten the job because of his dad, but Washington had no hard feelings firing Flip, but for some reason they don't want to let Ryan go? Maybe he is doing a good job and they like what he is doing.
I don't really care where you wife works. I know I can't get a job where my dad works either. My dad doesn't work at the University of Minnesota, and you can hire family members at the University.
I'm just going off the top of my head, but here is a list of Father/Son coach combos: Lane Kiffin, Joe Paterno, Pete Carroll, Bill Belichek, Jim Mora, Kirk Ferentz, Lou Holtz, Bobby Bowden x3, Bobby Knight, Eddie Sutton, and John Thompson - I know my list is mostly football, but I am more familiar with that sport.
