Can Pitino get us to Wisconsin's level?

I'm sick of the facilities talk. Any recruit should be able to come to the U and appreciate what we have there. None of that stuff makes them better players. And as far as not being mentioned in the same breath as Wisconsin? Whats so great about them, as far as I can tell we beat them in the barn and they beat us in their home.. seems pretty even to me.

Two of the most ludicrous things I've read in a while.

Yeah, that was a pretty ludicrous statement by BeaversMN. But is it any more ridiculous than a rival fan lurking on our board at midnight a day after their team has advanced to the Final Four?

I'm fairly certain that when Amumu recounts this story to his brethren, one Gopher fan's statement will be recast as the entire Gopher fan base stating that we are on equal terms. Guffaws will ensue. More time will be spent talking about the Gophers and their fans while their team prepares for Kentucky. Back in '97 when the Gophers advanced to the Final Four, I wasn't thinking about the Badger fan base at all-and I lived in Wisconsin at the time.

13 straight years to the NCAAs under their current coach, 6 of those 13 making it to the second weekend.

Not even.

And facilities matter. Quality recruits have more than one offer, I don't want us to be recruiting with one arm tied behind our back.

No, and most Badger fans aren't thinking of MN at all either. There are always a few loudmouths and stunted children. They're always a minority, it doesn't define a fanbase. They've always been there, it is just easier to be more vocal about it over the past decade or two and its getting easier every year... once we're back on top, and once we start taking back the axe, there will be a few of our fans being jerks on their forums as well.

Yeah except they finish in the top 4 of the Big Ten every year, are a threat to win the post season tournament every year and make a nice run in the NCAA's. EVERY YEAR. I salivate at the thought of us being able to do that. I've been watching Gopher Basketball for 30 years and we've never been a consistent NCAA team. Clem used to get us there every 3 or 4 years, but never consistently. I thought that might change after the Final Four season, but we know how that turned out. Facilities do matter and also getting that first super player to commit which will lead to the next one. We need to have a breakout season and have a breakout recruiting class. Basketball can turn around very fast, but I'm hoping to see us become a consistent tournament team some day. I wouldn't be surprised if that takes 5-10 years either.

Hence the reason that losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament is always better than a deep NIT run. That doesn't take away from this years run or my excitement to see us play hopefully twice this week, but you can't become a consistent NCAA Tournament team without consistently going to the NCAA Tournament.

Go Gophers!

There are a minority on their boards being jerks anyways. No need to out perform Wisconsin to run their mouths. Piper?

I think people use Wisconsin as a barometer because it's a similar state climate wise. Also it will be hard to recruit the way Ohio St, and the two Michigan's can. Wisconsin does it with mostly unheralded players and gets the most out of them. About a third of the mcdonalds all americans declare for the NBA after one year, another 3rd the next year, so if you get guys beyond the top 15 you get them 3-4 years. This is what Louisville had on their roster. Michigan last year as well. A majority of Michigan St's roster is outside of that top 15 also. Wisconsin is battling a very good Marquette team for recruits but Wisconsin has hit our talent base: Taylor, Taylor and Beggren. Ohio: Hayes. Illinois: Brust and Kaminsky.

You must have missed their loss just last year to the Fighting Marshall Hendersons in the first round (okay, okay, the "Round of 64")
