Brosmer really hitting his stride - 1st 4 vs. last 4

First off, Brosmer has been really solid all year and was a phenomenal pickup by the coaching staff. But has been a lot of fun to see him develop over the course of the season so thought it would be interesting to compare his first 4 games vs his last 4 games.

Can't wait to see what the final 4 regular season games bring. Hopefully he keeps the upward trajectory going.

Max goes through his progressions in the game pretty well. Hope he continues going through his progressions in the stats and wins column. Next level would be 75% completion rate, 12 passing TDs, no INTs, 5 rushing TDs and a 4-0 record. It's OK to dream, right?
 


Quite impressive considering the last 4 have all been Big Ten teams (Mich, USC, UCLA, Maryland) with a lot of resources and higher past recruiting ranks than the Gophers.

He's improved as the competition has improved.

At this point, I wouldn't be 100% confident that Fleck wouldn't choose a similar recruiting move this offseason by getting another accomplished and highly experienced QB as a grad transfer. Fleck has recruited over existing players before.

Max has had a quick learning curve and even his worst games weren't too bad. The memory of our last QB who was "waiting in the wings" may still be in Fleck's mind and Drake is only a RS freshman next season.

Thanks for assembling this data! Also, after having only one 70%+ game completion percentage in the first 5 games (against Rhode Island), Max has had topped that percentage three games in a row.

A fun fact from yesterday's game ----- The Gophers had 9 passes defended (where the defender gets his hand on the ball and deflects it or knocks it away) against Maryland. That's a lot for one game! Maryland had ZERO PDs against Max. That's says a lot about our passing offense and passing defense. This team must be one of the best pass defenses in Gopher history. Maryland had 323 yards passing but they threw the ball 43 times and many of those yards came after the outcome of the game already was decided.

Harbaugh also started calling a totally different offense against Iowa. The Gophers were snapping the ball with 25+ seconds left on the clock at times yesterday while winning.

Thank you Fleck for adapting to the environment and I was wrong about Harbaugh. (I think…)
 

Two things that have worked in his favor in the last 4 games.
1) He's gotten used to the speed of the game. Less throws behind our receivers...the dude's teachable.
2) Offensive Line has give him one extra second in the pocket. This is a big deal. Gives him time to go through progressions and for our receivers to break.

He's always had the tools, but now he's got time and experience. I expect him to progress even more these last 4 games. It will be a lot of fun - especially seeing him row the boat after TDs!

If the Gophers get out to a big lead against any of Illinois, Rutgers, or Wisconsin then I bet that we’re going to see Lindsay play again this year.

I think the reason he didn’t play yesterday is to have the ability to use him if Brosmer got dinged up in any game plus he’ll get good action in our bowl game most likely. They are trying to redshirt him if possible.

Minnesota and Indiana were both able to pull excellent QBs from the lower leagues. Kudos to Fleck and Harbaugh for IDing and getting their guy locked up.

He sees the field extremely well. If he has time he can pick a defense apart because he is so good at moving through his progressions.

Max rarely seems to put the ball up for grabs and does such a great job moving through his reads that he is able to find the open guy more often then not.

Maryland's passing stats from yesterday are definitely misleading as a big chunk of their yards came in the 4th quarter when the D was playing to take away the deep ball and the game was out of reach. 9 PD in a game is a crazy high number but definitely speaks to just how good our secondary is playing. Big key has been consistent pressure from the D-Line as well. Pass rush this year has been significantly better then what we have gotten used to seeing in recent years. Not getting a ton of sacks still but the pressure is there and opposing QBs don't look comfortable.

I’ll totally agree he’s been a lot better the past month. He’s really played a lot better since the Iowa game

Fair opinion. I’d say he was decent not really good early in the year. He’s been really good the last month or so IMO.

The receivers completing the catches has also helped. I don’t have any stats in front of me but Jackson and Co, the tight ends and backs are getting open and making plays.

Or balls a yard behind, above when he gets happy feet. I suppose this isn’t earth-shattering but I watched the Rutgers USC game and despite the book on Kaliakmanis consisting of make him uncomfortable, hit him, see ghosts and let him self destruct they USC rushed 3 or 4, never really put got to him or a rush on and let him work. He looked ok, at least early on. Ultimately didn’t matter because they couldn’t stop USC’s offense.

Looking at his stats they are remarkably similar to last year despite markedly more attempts. No Rutgers miracle.

If a one-year QB transfer comes in next year he is the experienced backup in case Drake goes down. Would not be a bad idea.

Not Illinois. He only has three games to enter without burning the redshirt, something they do not want to do. Of course if at any time we lose Max for any period of time the redshirt goes out the window. That has been the case all season.

Or he’s better than Drake and Drake can wait another year or transfer.
 

If Max Brosmer keeps improving this season, I think he'll be the best Gopher QB I've ever seen and I'm 51 years old. As they said on the Gopher Gridiron podcast, he might be a good backup NFL QB in the future. Have the Gophers ever had a quarterback start in the NFL?

I believe Spergon Wynn, Chris Streveler, Mike Hohensee and Bill Garnaas all started NFL games AS Quarterbacks. Tony Dungy and MarQueis Gray started NFL games at positions other than QB.
 

Could it be that his passing seems better, but has always been there.
They are throwing more in early downs when they have typically ran. That change from the old normal, probably helped open up the passing game. There seems to be better separation from the wideouts as well.
Darius Taylor is also showing up with receiving skills.
 

Fewer OL penalties (driving me batshit crazy), fewer drops, and better play calling have all contributed along with Brosmer gaining familiarity.
