Let's talk about the "sleaze factor".

Brewster comes off as a major sleaze to most Gopher fans. However, the players are near unanimous in their support for the guy. Now I'm not saying that players should be harping on their coach, especially publicly, but these guys are pretty enthusiastic about the fact that he's a great coach.

Personally, I've never felt like he had a chance in hell of being our "guy". Minnesota does not fit with his used-car salesman schtick. If he failed here, he would sink back into the realm of TE coach for the Redskins, or chief recruiter for Texas. If he delivered on all the optimism with wins, esp. against the rivals, he would just move on to coach some bigger program or the NFL. Northwestern found their "guy" with Fitz. We can all tell that Dickrod will never be the "guy" in Mich, he blew his chance when he bailed on WV. Mason really wanted to be "the guy"......in Columbus. JoePa is the definition of "the guy" over at PSU. Nobody has stepped up with a reason to better the U's football team for the sake of The U.

So here we are. You would think that we would let this guy go because the wins are not coming, the recruiting is solid, but slipping; and the media and fans think he is a joke, more or less. However, Maturi (who is a tool himself) MUST be noticing that the players seem to love the guy. I think that Maturi had a better sense than us that the players and recruits we had were more loyal to Brew than to the U.... and that makes for a very difficult decision.

So is how long do we put up with him?? If he's not our "guy" could he ever become that guy just by winning?? Or does he have to change his personality a bit. Personally I think he was really an over-confident guy, which helped him recruit immensely. And these first few years were exactly what a cocky first-time head coach needed..... a good old-fashioned slap in the face with reality. Look at him!! He looks dead tired! I do NOT think Brew earned the extension, but I do think that he can grow into this place if he changes his attitude and settles in a bit. Stability will bring results. Brewster might not know how to coach a football team, but he's not too far off. And he can learn. For most guys, the hard part is getting the players to like and trust you.

Just look over at madison. The reason bielema is going to be their "guy" was not because he was ready to coach that team... the reason was that the team was ready for him. I mean this in the sense that the program was successful and stable enough for a guy to learn to be the head coach over there. bielema was a die-hard Iowa guy for cripes sakes! But he had time to learn to make wisky his home. Brewster looks really bad because neither he, nor the U's football team were ready to be at the level that the fans deserved and were ready for.

Lotta thoughts there. Rant over.

Brew needs to do 2 things to be our guy:
1. When publicly speaking, he needs to quit using 8 adjectives in each sentence.
2. He needs to win. Beat our rivals and have a winning conference record.

Step #1- Wait 30 seconds for recruiting to be over.

Step #2- Pivot immediately to talking about Brewster's job security.

"Brewster comes of as a major sleaze to most Gopher fans."

No he doesn't.

Shut up, play by the rules, graduate your players and compete with our rivals.

Minnesota job description.

Did I miss anything?

This "our guy" crap is ridiculous. I got the feeling on the day of Brewster's press conference that some people were not even willing to give him a chance. What is the job description? Win. A Lot. Brewster has failed at it (so far) just like Mason before him and Gutey before him. I could care less how Brewster comes off to some fan. I care if he wins games.

"We" don't need "our Fitzgerald". "We" need a coach who's going to improve the talent level and start competing for Big Ten championships. If that's Brewster, great. If it's not then we need to move on, but a personality that makes certain Minnesotans feel warm and fuzzy inside should not be a job consideration, much less a job requirement.

couldn't agree more I roll my eyes so much when listening to him speak...its like really come on maybe that line worked 2 years ago BUT NOW!?!? after that season we just had!!!

A couple things about Brewster. First off, he did not come in with strong credentials, like Tubby Smith did. Most fans gave him the benefit of the doubt from day one (not guys like Loon or Wren, though.) He talked a great game about going to the Rose Bowl (eventually) but he lost a lot of people with an immediate 1-11 team. Pretty soon, his talk about the players playing a tremendous game fell on deaf ears because it was unrealistic. Minnesota fans will give guys like Tubby a little more leeway because they have respect for him - that respect was earned by a lot of wins and a national championship at Kentucky, one of the top programs in the nation.

I don't think the fans have very much respect for Brewster - he certainly hasn't deserved much so far. I think most fans still don't know whether he can coach or not. I know he can recruit, but so can every other Big Ten coach, and that goes all the way down to Indiana who hauled in some nice pickups. That means you sure as hell better be able to coach in this league or you will wind up in the broadcast booth in a hurry if you can't recruit or coach with the rest of them.

Brewster might have the respect of the players, but in all honesty do did John Gutekunst. The players all backed Gutey as their coach and we lost out on a guy who won a national championship a few years later, Bobby Ross. That was a mistake - Gutey hasn't been a head coach since and Ross was a pretty good coach.

Brewster talks a great game and he can recruit, but he has a lot more in common with Jim Wacker than he does with Lou Holtz, at least so far. His window is starting to close and he will be on the hot seat to start winning very soon, if he isn't already. I am pulling for him to do well as that means the Gophers will be successful, but I don't see him as "our guy." He would leave us the first chance he could for more money and I doubt if he has much loyalty here at all. The rumblings and feelers for the Kansas job backfired and I know the first good team that came after him could get him if they wanted him.

I get the feeling we are really going to know what needs to be done after this year and this will be his make or break season. Either he will be successful and sign a meaningful contract or he will be looking for TE jobs in the NFL again.

good god here we go again........

I'll see you when Spring Practice starts....the next 2 months are going to be full of this crap

I am a Brew guy, but I can't say I disagree with much of this. Although, I would like to think, on paper, the 2010 class bests Indiana, plus 4-5 others. The "coaching up" happens more indirectly through the coordinators and position coaches, but Brew is still on the hook for those hires. Let's hope Brew had made the right moves there.

Recently talked to a parent of a player who was a Brewster recruit. He said that his son told him that about 3/4 the team loves Brewster and the other 1/4 hate him. Said that the guys who hate him are all Mason recruits. Brewster guys love Brewster.

If they hate him so bad why don't they just transfer. If they don't respect the coach what good are they doing?

I agree with #2 but not the first one. Who the hell cares what he says when he's speaking to the public? He's a coach and recruiter, not the Speaker of the House. I find it funny how so many make such a big deal what he says in his press conferences. Would it make you guys feel any better if he was the best speaker in the world but we still played exactly the same as we have the three years he's been the head coach?

I didn't expect everyone to agree with me.

Just to clarify... I don't think he is a sleazy guy. He just comes off as one to me and many many people i've spoken to. This is the result of his used-car salesman attitude. Optimism is wonderful and has been desperately needed around these parts, that is for sure, and he delivered. But the man seems to never be disappointed, nothing ever is that bad....even when it is. This reluctance to admit that things haven't gone according to plan is coming off as more and more disingenuous as the days go by.

I also wonder if weber and decker and vandesteeg have been some of the mason recruits who didn't like Brew... probably won't ever find out.

Am I disappointed with the recruits overall? Nope.
The recruits signed today? Nope. Love 'em.
The overall win-loss this year given the tough schedule? Nope.
The way we lose the games we lose? Yes, disappointing.
Big Ten record in the last 5 or 6 years? I expected better.
The rivalry games in the last 5 or 6 years? Very, very disappointed.
Do I like the willingness to schedule tough opponents. Love it!
The direction of the program given the new stadium and renewed interest? Excellent.
Brewster's teams so far? Not impressed at all.
Brewster's future? We'll see.

Poor fans. Their coach talks too much. Their coach didn't turn around a program that has been bad for 40 years in three years. Their recruiting classes have fallen off even though they are still better than they have been for 15 years. Poor fans think their University should win now or get rid of this bum. We can get a real coach in here that can recruit and coach and win a Big Ten title in the next three years. Just get rid of this guy.

I feel sorry for you fans that have it so bad here. Whatever you do, don't have any patience. DOn't stand behind the coach when things get tough. Don't wait until his players are at least Juniors. Don't love his enthusiasm. Change is what we need here. It works so well.

I hope you fans find relief soon.

Of course. The football coach is a representative of the University. It matters to me that he does that well, in addition to winning football games.

I'm not saying using 8 adjectives is the end of the world, but to answer your question in a general sense, of course it does.

Thank You gg:clap:

poor fans is right, he hasn't kept a staff together yet in his time here. with no stability in the staff can we expect a winning team... riddle me that!

After watching the Gophers the last 3 years under Brewster, it can easily be seen that the players would run through a wall for him. I can say unequivically that this had not been the case. Definitely not to the extend that is there now. This year the team did now quit, the only case could possibly be Ohio State when there was little to no chance of coming back late in the second half. Personally, I look forward to next year and what this team will do against an arguably, extremely tough schedule. I really hope Brewster gets at least 2 more years to prove himself. He is everything this team and state needs, and what it has been lacking for far too long.

Agree

Many top D1 coaches are rah, rah, get use to it (check out the characters in the SEC). A Bud Grant personality would not make it in todays college football.

Brew has been learning on the job and unfortunately he has chosen to pick some "up and coming" (Pro) coordinators that have had to learn on the job also. This has lead to the instability in coaching. It looks like he now has some more experienced coaches that actually want to be at this level. Things will stabilize and we will improve. The head coach is the CEO of the team, he doesn't need to be best X and O guy, he just needs to have them on his staff.

Give him time and it will all work out.

wrong

Why doesn't he have super powers like every other coach?

You guys are laughable. Have any of you sat down and talked to Brewster? He is a very decent and genuine guy. You need to consider what you are saying about people you don't really know. You know you want to win, that's all, and Brewster is not meeting your expectations. If he were winning more games, you would like him. It's that simple. Show a little more maturity and emotional control than the trash people you only know through the media or rumor.
