Let's talk about the "sleaze factor".
Brewster comes off as a major sleaze to most Gopher fans. However, the players are near unanimous in their support for the guy. Now I'm not saying that players should be harping on their coach, especially publicly, but these guys are pretty enthusiastic about the fact that he's a great coach.
Personally, I've never felt like he had a chance in hell of being our "guy". Minnesota does not fit with his used-car salesman schtick. If he failed here, he would sink back into the realm of TE coach for the Redskins, or chief recruiter for Texas. If he delivered on all the optimism with wins, esp. against the rivals, he would just move on to coach some bigger program or the NFL. Northwestern found their "guy" with Fitz. We can all tell that Dickrod will never be the "guy" in Mich, he blew his chance when he bailed on WV. Mason really wanted to be "the guy"......in Columbus. JoePa is the definition of "the guy" over at PSU. Nobody has stepped up with a reason to better the U's football team for the sake of The U.
So here we are. You would think that we would let this guy go because the wins are not coming, the recruiting is solid, but slipping; and the media and fans think he is a joke, more or less. However, Maturi (who is a tool himself) MUST be noticing that the players seem to love the guy. I think that Maturi had a better sense than us that the players and recruits we had were more loyal to Brew than to the U.... and that makes for a very difficult decision.
So is how long do we put up with him?? If he's not our "guy" could he ever become that guy just by winning?? Or does he have to change his personality a bit. Personally I think he was really an over-confident guy, which helped him recruit immensely. And these first few years were exactly what a cocky first-time head coach needed..... a good old-fashioned slap in the face with reality. Look at him!! He looks dead tired! I do NOT think Brew earned the extension, but I do think that he can grow into this place if he changes his attitude and settles in a bit. Stability will bring results. Brewster might not know how to coach a football team, but he's not too far off. And he can learn. For most guys, the hard part is getting the players to like and trust you.
Just look over at madison. The reason bielema is going to be their "guy" was not because he was ready to coach that team... the reason was that the team was ready for him. I mean this in the sense that the program was successful and stable enough for a guy to learn to be the head coach over there. bielema was a die-hard Iowa guy for cripes sakes! But he had time to learn to make wisky his home. Brewster looks really bad because neither he, nor the U's football team were ready to be at the level that the fans deserved and were ready for.
Lotta thoughts there. Rant over.
