First, let me say that I am a Gopher fan and a U of M graduate. I also don't really care who our coaches are...just that they do a good job and represent my school well. That being said...here is my take on Brewster...
He is the first coach we have had since Sweet Lou stuck it in our backsides that I believe has any hope of getting us to the next level...Period.
Our talent, our atheletes, our coaching staff, our program is in its best shape in 30 plus years and Brewster works hard every day to improve it. Couldn't say that about Mason or Gute and Holtz was a sleaze and whore...not just talked like one.
Brewster earned his extension not with wins but by changing the environment of our program. I believe we can and will be average for several more years as we stabilize our coaches and coordinators...but with consistent recruiting and deeper talent...we will get better. As we become a top 50 team instead of a top 90 team...Brewster will continue to recruit above our rank and give us top 25 talent...guess what happens 2-3 years after that...we are a top 25 team and the possibilities are endless after that. Who else could we have hired that would have done the work, put in the time, stayed the course, recruited his ass off and gave it all up for our Gophers? We have been through 6 guys in 40 years that didn't, couldn't or wouldn't.
I appreciate and respect the job Brewster has done and am excited that he has 3 more years to grow into the job and develop our athletes.
5 years from now I believe we will be like Oregon or Cal...top 25 and can compete with the best in their conference...maybe no every year...but compete and win some.
Well said. To add more fuel....he's not like us (Minnesota nice) and that's what we need. Someone who's going to keep delivering the message to his players that they have the ability to win championships...even though that might not be the reality right now. He's a glass half full kind of guy.
