Brewster the Recruiter

how do I ignore gopher1956?

I don't see how to do that

Umm................ yea. I bet the Illinois fans feel like that was 20 years ago by the looks of it now. Plus, every once in a while a blind squirrel finds a nut here or there.

Floridas National Championships are in thanks to Ron Zook's athletes

The 2.74 star average is because there are two players that don't have any stars yet. At the very least, they will be 2 star recruits, bringing the average up to 2.91. If they're both rated as 3 stars, the average goes up to 3.00.

I agree that this class is looking to be not as good as the last two, but it's still better than we've had compared to most in the last 20 years. If we land one or two big recruits like Henderson or someone changes their mind on signing day like Carter did last year, it will quickly turn into a very good signing class.

Agreed, and we also have more spots to fill and some may be 4 star and one may be 5 star, so this class is going to be better than it is now. However I can see how it will be less than the last 2 but still better than we have been used to.

I don't see how to do that

There might be an easier way, but I use to do it like this,: I'd put one finger in one ear, and then another in the other ear and go "lalalalalalalalala". But that didn't work. So then I put one hand over each eye, i still did the lala thing because it was fun, but this was ineffective as well, because no matter how long I held my hands over my eyes when I took them down he was still there. So then I did this and it worked:

1. Click on his moniker
2. Click on 'view public profile'
3. Click on 'user lists' in the gold menu banner under his moniker
4. Click on 'ignore this user'
5. wait for confirmation screen and click Yes when it asks if you want to ignore this user.
6. Enjoy

Which he did nothing with, until a real coach stepped in. Point further proven.

he had a winning record when they let him go...no one can say he wouldnt have done the same if he would have stuck around...jackiO are you that stubborn?

No, Zook was fired for a reason. :)

Agreed, I don't understand people not appreciating Zook, He is a fine coach and a top notch recruiter and great for the Big Ten Conference. If we want a rep as a good conference instead of being a joke of a conference, we need more Zooks, DickRods, and Brews to bring our collective talent level up to SEC standards (although we will never catch up to their talent,we need to come close) And those guys are the ones to do it

pretty sure it was for off field issues more so than on field issues. if memory serves correctly, i believe it had something to do with recruiting. i may be wrong, but i can admit that! its hard for me to imagine jackiO, that zook was canned due to his horrid record at florida. he was above .500 and had a good record vs the sec. you just argue because you dont know any better. your idea to fix something is to just remove it. you must be fun

You crack me up. You are the one getting extremely agitated over nothing. I have an opinion, as do you and I just do not happen to agree with yours. I'll leave it at that.

wrong way to look at it

I don't follow recruiting like some but it seems to me unfair to compare partial classes with full classes as the high level players with lots of offers take their time. I know Carter and Gray both committed in Janaury of their year and I suspect many of the others are later than mid-November. A quick google search reveals Cooper announced in February.

Low ranked guys commit early, those with options take their time.

In most cases from my experience in coaching High School players.....Most kids who have good guideline make up thier minds quick....

They have a check list of what they are looking to accomplish in college and when they find a coaching staff that fits the bill they commit.....

Some commit early because they they found what they were looking for and want to put the process to rest and not have it be a distraction for their team mates on their high school squad..

others take more time because they really like more than one school

others take their time because no school jumps out at them

some take their time because they enjoy the process of big schools courting them...

it has nothing or very little to do with talent level..

actually

If I had to guess, I'd say a big part of Brewster's pitch has been along the lines of 'We're making big changes, you're going to play the first game in a new stadium, you're going to be part of the team that turns around football in MN, etc...' and now he's hit a soft spot in the timeline. He's been here long enough that he can't argue the whole new team bit, so he's got to win in the next two seasons with the recruits he got, and use that hopeful improvement on the field to build his new pitch.

He says you get to play on a big stage

you will have an opportunity to get an education second to none

you will be a part of a brotherhood that will be there not just the next 4 or 5 years but for life

steel sharpens steel if you come and let us sharpen you... you will return home a man that your family will be proud of.........

that is what he said to us

Interesting Pops. Although all those things are true, it seems like alot of coaches could say the same thing. Were the other recruiters that bad, or what was it that made you believe the Gophers more than others? What stood out?

nope, not angry, agitated, upset, anything...but before im going to pop off about someone being a bad coach im going to look at the track records as you say and make a logical opinion. you see a coach who did pretty good, get fired, and a new coach lead his guys to the promised land and come up with, the whole "so and so cant coach or develop players!" i would say your te minority on that opinion and its not thought out very well at all!

I appreciate your opinion as it was a well thought out post definitely, but to me when you are last in Defense and Offense in the Big ten, that doesn't bode well for player development.

Thanks I appreciate your comments and I apprciate everyone on this board that wants to see the program accomplish great things and from reading your posts I can tell you want that. You bring up a good point and concern about us being last in Defense and Offense. Now you stated being "last in Defense and Offense in the Big Ten, that doesn't bode well for player development." You might be right that being last in Offense and Defense does in fact have a correlation with players not being developed into decent football players. My question is then since the gophers are last in defense and offense and the player development; how have the gophers became bowl eligible and won 3 Big 10 games? (Note I am in no way saying that they have a great record as I hope we reach a Rose Bowl sometime in my lifetimee but the gophers aren't in last place in the Big Ten.) Are the coaches making great crucial play calls to make up for it? Did the other teams just have an off day? Are gopher recruiting already good players? (I was informed in this post that the gophers aren't as many of the student athletes even the high star athletes didn't recieve offers from other bcs teams). Are the gophers winning by great special forces? Luck, you know the ol blind gopher finding a nut? Were those teams looking past the gophers? Thanks

Sorry I'm new to this site as you can see by my post totals. I just wanted to thank your son and your family for deciding on the U. In my humble opinion it is the greatest University in the World and I hope all of the things Brewster told him happen especially the education second to none (this is where a Hawkeye fan will poke fun at my grammar mistakes haha) and the part returning home a man that you and your family will be proud of. Good luck to him and may he be proud to wear the maroon and gold!

Very interesting thread, I brought up similar concerns about the recruiting this year around the time that we had the 2 Wisconsin lineman and the Illinois lineman commit. I do think offers have have to be taken in some context. For example, some people were concerned that Willis may get a Miami offer, if they miss out on a stud, while Veazie is said to be getting interest from Ole Miss. Now is that an offer or just a letter? We can't always be sure. I do know I'd take just about any DB with an SEC offer (other than Vanderbilt).

I have been concerned that the "hit percentage" on visits has been down significantly this year. I've especially been disappointed that the Gophers were unable to secure commitments from a few of the top players they had on hand for the stadium opener.

This could still turn out to be a very good class, and if we don't add a single player it is still significantly better than what we were used to around here. I am concerned with the downward trend, but hope that by the end of the recruiting season it won't look that way.

I wonder if early commitments have something to do with the lack of offers? I wouldn't be surprised to learn at some point that some of the early commitments rejected interest that came after they pledged to Minnesota.

Someone wake me up when all of this "Recruiting" starts showing on the field...you know...where it counts.......

other recruiters

Interesting Pops. Although all those things are true, it seems like alot of coaches could say the same thing. Were the other recruiters that bad, or what was it that made you believe the Gophers more than others? What stood out?

some were stiff and uncomfortable in my modest home

some talked about the team the town not the education

some assumed that a 17 year old kid was going to make a life decision by himself..

some assumed that he was a typical kid with no father in the home and asked to speak to his mother..

Minnesota sent more than one recruiter... and they came at different times...

all of them ate dinner at my house....

when they came they talked to the whole family and answered questions truthfully

they did not lie about any thing most importantly

did not sell false hope

sent personal things before every game... good luck cards

showed real interest in what was happening in his high school career

knew how he was doing in class

knew how he performed in the game with intimate details

Tim Brewster himself came for a visit.

had a meeting with all of the women in the family

had a meeting with all the men in the family

had a meeting with my son and myself

had a meting with myself and my pastor

had a meeting with me alone..

sent recruiters down one more time adorned with N C A A championship rings and super bowl rings
to match my peach bowl ring....

so yeah i would say they did some things that other recruiters from other schools did not do...

and i am a Brewster fan and will not apologize for it..

This fan base accuse Brewster of selling sizzle

What he sells is honesty and enthusiasm ....

going through the recruiting process i can not tell you how many B.S artist are out there that will try to sell a kid and his parents a bunch of crap that they know they are lying about..

as far as developing players trust me when i tell you this the kid i coached the kid i watched grow up the kid i thought was dayumn good who was a star from pee wee league to middle school to high school is not the same kid i sent to Minnesota.. he is unbelievable now and he is just in his second year... what will he be 2 or three years down the road..

personally all you fire Brewster people i hope you fail miserably

PLEEEEEEASE tell us the teams with BS artists as coaches! i am willing to bet one was wisconsin.

can we please wait until the class has been filled out and enrolled before we make judgments on it?

I agree! because if we end up getting henderson or allen or ash or gayden this class looks wayyyy different.

Wow!!!! that is impressive recruiting.

I hope your son enjoys being a Gopher player and student; moreover, I hope he gets to fulfill his dreams.

J.D. Pride isn't even the best player on his high school team. What a joke. Unless he is out of position and has a better spot for college, I doubt he'll see the field as a qb.

Did you see Brew giving a pep talk to all the seniors before the SDSU game? He was really firing them up, he thought. He was dad gum hot chilli talkin' to those boys and they came out and laid the biggest egg since Gutey.

Thanks for sharing, that's some great stuff. I don't think many fans realize how much goes into recruiting.

Some fans don't like him talking positive all the time, but I think he's just being himself and that's what he should be.

Brewsters comment of teaching and not yelling is the basis for coaching would have sold me. I played for a yeller. I, definitely, had my times where I yelled when I coached, but the majority of my time was spent coaching the kids who made mistakes.

Agree...it is refreshing to get the in home perspective on Brewster and his staff's recruiting integrity. I also agree that the positive attitude he has is simply the way he is. Personally I believe his positive attitude is desperately needed concerning U sports.

Thanks GopherPops for a good message for all of the trolls on here...Most of us actually SUPPORT our team and our proud of them win or lose....sometimes I get frustrated too but I know we have some good talent in the pipeline!

If Brewster is just as bad of a coach as Zook, shall I book a room in Pasadena for Jan 1, 2011 or 2012?

Thank you gopher pops. I now have a greater understanding of why Brewster is so successful at recruiting. And I hope people draw a correlation between the fact that he didn't need to sell sizzle to make it happen and how successful this program can be.
