“It’s really fun to watch her compete and be in a different environment,” Plitzuweit said. “The games are very physical games, they’re very fast-paced games. You’re playing outside, so there are a lot of different challenges. I think she’s growing and learning. She’s having a great experience.”

USA Basketball announced today the two women’s teams set to compete at the 2023 FIBA 3x3 Nations League Final Sept. 13-15 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Based on the results from respective FIBA U21 and U23 Nations League conference play earlier this summer, the USA qualified teams in both age groups to the 3x3 Nations League Final.

Both teams feature NCAA Division I athletes who have previous USA Basketball 3x3 experience.

The 2023 USA 3x3 U23 Nations League Final Team features Azana Baines, Teisha Hyman, Leilani Kapinus and Sydney Taylor.

The 2023 USA 3x3 U21 Nations League Final Team includes Mara Braun, Christina Dalce, Morgan Maly and Lucy Olsen.

Baines, Kapinus and Taylor were members of the USA 3x3 U23 Nations League Team that won five of six conference stops en route to a first-place finish at the 2023 FIBA 3x3 U23 Nations League Americas conference in Rancagua, Chile, in July. Hyman recently made her USA 3x3 debut with USA U24 at the FIBA 3x3 Women’s Series Debrecen Stop.

Braun, Dalce, Maly and Olsen were all members of the USA 3x3 U21 Nations League Team that finished with five-of-six stop titles at the 2023 FIBA 3x3 U21 Nations League Asia-Pacific Conference in Handan, China, in June.

Tammi Reiss (University of Rhode Island) will serve as head coach for both teams. She also served as head coach for USA U24 on the FIBA 3x3 Women’s Series and was an assistant coach of the gold-medal-winning 2023 USA 3x3 Women’s World Cup Team.

Launched in 2017, the men’s and women’s FIBA 3x3 Nations League features two age groups – U23 and U21 – with dozens of national federations competing. The competition featured six three-game tournaments in seven days. The winning team in each of 13 conference events hosted worldwide qualified for the FIBA 3x3 Nations League Final.

Different than 5-on-5, 3x3 is played on a half-court with a 10-minute game clock and 12-second shot clock. Play is continuous, as teams “clear” the ball behind the 2-point line following a made basketball, defensive rebound or steal. The first team to score 21 points via 1-pointer field goals or 2-pointers behind the arc is victorious; or if time expires then the team leading wins.

You win the first tournament and then you mess with the rosters? Thanks for winning-see ya.

Somebody gets hurt and you only have 3 people...somebody gets a bloody nose, poked in the eye, somehow is hobbled you are playing with two. Food poisoning, flu...

Not all coaches are honorable, most are competitive. One massive elbow to the mid-section chest and you just missed the game.

Temptation is a basic weakness.

MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota rising sophomore Mara Braun returns to international play this Wednesday, September 13, in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, to compete in the 2023 FIBA 3x3 Nations League Final.

Braun will be joined on Team USA's U21 Nations League roster by Christina Dalce (Villanova), Morgan Maly (Creighton) and Lucy Olson (Villanova) in Mongolia. The group of four were teammates on the USA 3x3 U21 Nations League Team that finished with five-of-six stop titles at the 2023 FIBA 3x3 U21 Nations League Asia-Pacific Conference in Handan, China, in June....

USA beat France 21-18 in the second game.

This time Christina Dalce led Team USA in scoring with 7 points. Braun had 2 points.

Can anyone explain the two US teams. Were they playing in the same tournament or were there two separate tournaments?
 

My understanding is that the U.S. qualified two separate teams for this event. One team age 23 and under and one team age 21 and under. The younger team beat the older team in the semi-finals to get to the final game where they defeated the team from China.

One was U21 which is for age 21 or under. Braun was in the U21 team. Braun was just a freshman last season.

The other was U23 which is for players age 23 or younger.

They play in separate tournaments against other teams the same age.

The key phrase is "U." These are youth basketball teams. The main reason for "U" teams is to train youth players still learning.

Some countries do not have a extensive systems of basketball training like the USA does for youth sports, so these U competitions provide valuable training otherwise not available. Australia, for example, doesn't have the extensive AAU "traveling teams" like USA has. And then if you look at countries that are less developed , these national teams are their means to train players.

So Mara Braun played for a "U21" team USA team that is designed to get her training experience. It also is a way to have international relations and peace.

Now, to confuse this further, those teams are for 3x3 basketball.

I'm no expert. But in the brackets USA U21 played USA before China in the finals.
There is also USA U23 in a separate division.
If you click around there are rosters for these teams.
So, two separate USA teams in the same tournament and another USA team in another tournament.
Standings and Brackets
Prior to this USA U21 played three games and won them versus Pool C opponents to get to the finals bracket. France, Spain and Jordan.

Anyone know why USA U23 changed their roster? The U23 team with Van Lith that qualified was good. The replacement U23 team not so much.
