boxing action on Saturday (Sept 21)

in London:
Daniel Dubois wins on 5th round KO over Anthony Joshua for the IBF Heavyweight title. (the IBF belt was vacated when Oleksandr Usyk chose to fight Tyson Fury instead of Dubois, who was the IBF mandatory challenger.)

other results on the card--
--Hamzah Sheeraz defeated Tyler Denny by TKO in 2nd round in a middleweight bout
--Joshua Buatsi defeated Willy Hutchinson by split decision; wins vacant WBO interim light heavyweight title
--Title fight: Anthony Cacace defeated Josh Warrington by unanimous decision and retains IBF junior lightweight title
--Josh Kelly defeated Ishmael Davis by majority decision in a middleweight bout
--Josh Padley defeated Mark Chamberlain by unanimous decision in a lightweight bout
-----

on a card in Arizona, in the main event, at Super Middleweight, Jaime Munguia won on KO in the 10th round over Erik Bazinyan.

on the undercard - among the results
--Richard Torrez Jr. defeated Joey Dawejko by fifth-round DQ in a heavyweight bout. (Dawejko disqualified for repeatedly spitting out his mouth guard...)
--Emiliano Vargas defeated Larry Fryers by TKO in the 5th round in a junior welterweight bout

on Saturday, there was a unification fight in the Light Heavyweight division, with Artur Beterbiev (WBC, WBO & IBF Champ) vs Dmitry Bivol (WBA champ). Beterbiev becomes the undisputed champion on a majority decision. one judge had it a draw, the other two gave Beterbiev the decision - 115-113 and 116-112. (onlookers thought the 116-112 score was off-base. I would have given it to Bivol.)

Bivol seemed to control the early rounds with his jab and counter-punching. Beterbiev landed heavier shots and did come on late in the fight. for Bivol, the first loss of his career. for Beterbiev, his first fight that did not end in a KO.

in the undercard:
**Fabio Wardley won by 1st round KO over Frazer Clarke for the British Heavyweight title.
**Jai Opetaia wins 6th round TKO over Jack Massey for the IBF Cruiserweight title
**Chris Eubank Jr. wins 7th round TKO over Kamil Szeremeta at Middleweight.
**Skye Nicolson wins unanimous decision over Raven Chapman for WBC Women's Featherweight title.
**and this has to be seen to be believed - Light Heavyweights Ben Whittaker and Liam Cameron were in the 7th round when the two got tangled up and somehow flipped up and over the ropes and out of the ring. Whittaker left the arena in a wheelchair. the fight was ruled a draw.
------
coming up - if you consider this a valid fight - Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul in November. and Oleksandr Usky vs Tyson Fury in their Heavyweight rematch in December.

apparently it was a bigger farce than I expected.

Jake Paul defeats Mike Tyson by unanimous decision. according to the guy doing live updates for ESPN, in the final round, (quoting) "the crowd was showering the ring with boos." His card had Paul winning every round. Tyson only landed something like 20 punches in 8 (2-minute) rounds.

here's the undercard results:
Katie Taylor (c) def. Amanda Serrano via unanimous decision (95-94, 95-94, 95-94)

Mario Barrios (c) vs. Abel Ramos ends in a split draw (114-112, 110-116, 113-113). Barrios retains WBC Welterweight title.

Neeraj Goyat def. Whindersson Nunes via unanimous decision (59-55, 60-54, 60-54) - women's middleweights

Shadasia Green def. Melinda Watpool via split decision (97-93, 94-96, 96-94). Green claims WBO women's Super Middleweight Title.

Lucas Bahdi def. Armando Casamonica via majority decision (95-95, 96-93, 98-92) - lightweight

Bruce "Shu Shu" Carrington Jr. def. Dana Coolwell via unanimous decision (80-70, 80-70, 80-70) -featherweight

Tyson went the distance barely. Paul wins with unanimous decision

Just watched the fight. Hopefully that is my first and last ever exposure to the Paul Family.

The real loser was Netflix. What a complete joke that was. Of course they probably made many millions, but the event itself was amazingly bad.

I watched but could only do so on my phone as the TV just kept buffering.
The fight was good for the first 30 to 45 seconds when Tyson tried to actually punch some. After that the rest was awful and the announcers were even worse.

Fully scripted to last all eight (8) rounds, IMO. Disgraceful showing for whatever is left of the sport of boxing.

On top of that, the Serrano debacle of a decision did the sport no favors, either.

It's easy to see why MMA has made boxing irrelevant.

forgot to add this in my earlier post - I don't have Netflix, so I was sort of following the action based on websites doing "live" updates. checked several different sites and every place I checked, the one thing everyone agreed upon was that the judging was spooky all night. a lot of complaints about the decisions in both women's fights, and at least one of the men's fights.

as a boxing fan, I know that judging can vary, and I've seen some atrocious decisions over the years, but this sounds as if it might have been worse than average. all in all, a bad night for boxing.

Let's hope that Fury - Usyk part II gives the sport a better showcase.

I'm a little surprised at how many people continue to watch these money grabs

Jake Paul was not killed in the ring.

Ergo, the match was a failure.

What a shit show, I'm angry I watched it. I was with some fun people so that made it bearable.

Paul didn't go as hard as he could.

I think that's good, no reason to hurt Tyson, the payday is the same either way.

Paul organized a great con job, $60 million worth.

That's America today, a bunch of suckers, myself included...

Fairly interesting Boxing card Saturday on ESPN+/ESPN.

Main event: Emanuel Navarrete defeated Oscar Valdez by KO in 6th round to defend his WBO Junior Lightweight title. Navarrete knocked Valdez down three times, ending the fight with a nasty body shot.

Co-Main: Rafael Espinoza defeated Robeisy Ramirez by TKO in the 6th round to defend his WBO Featherweight title. Ramirez quit fighting in the 6th round, claiming he could not see out of his right eye. Ramirez said Espinoza hit him in the eye with an elbow in the 4th round; TV coverage could not confirm. Ramirez was doing well in the early rounds and was probably ahead on the scorecards when the fight ended.

undercard fights --
Lindolfo Delgado def. Jackson Marinez via TKO 5; Super Lightweights
Giovani Santillan def. Fredrick Lawson via TKO 1; Welterweights
Richard Torrez Jr. def. Isaac Munoz Gutierrez via TKO 3; Heavyweights
Demler Zamora def. Roman Ruben Reynoso via TKO 2; Super Featherweights
Albert Gonzalez def. Gerardo Antonio Perez via UD 8; Super Featherweights
Art Barrera Jr. def. Juan Carlos Campos Medina via TKO 2; Welterweights
Steven Navarro def. Gabriel Bernardi Cruz via TKO 2; Super Flyweights

(gripe: Undercard bouts were on ESPN+ - but the two main fights were scheduled for ESPN. the ESPN coverage couldn't start until a football game ended - so there was a break of well over an hour after the last undercard bout ended until the two main fights could begin. didn't help that only 1 undercard bout went the distance - all the other bouts ended with KO's or TKO's.)

up next: Dec 21 - Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usky rematch in Saudi Arabia (PPV).

and on Christmas Eve - Naoya Inoue defends his Jr Featherweight title in Tokyo. (ESPN+)

2nd fight - same results. Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk just wrapped up.

Usyk wins a unanimous decision. all 3 judges had it 116-112 - meaning they gave 8 rounds to Usyk and 4 rounds to Fury.

Usyk defends his WBC, WBO and WBA Heavyweight titles. (Daniel Dubois currently holds the IBF Heavyweight title.)

according to accounts of the fight (I did not pay for the PPV),
Fury had his moments but Usyk was more consistent and landed more punches. Usyk is now 23-0 for his career, Fury falls to 34-2-1.
-----
among the undercard bouts:
-- Heavyweight Moses Itauma ran his record to 11-0 (with 9 knockouts) with a 1st round knockout win over Demsey McKean. Itauma getting a lot of buzz as the next big thing at Heavyweight.

--Serhii Bohachuk defeats Ishmael Davis when Davis' corner throws in the towel after the 6th round. Bohachuk is in line to face Sebastian Fundora for the WBC Junior Middleweight title. (154 lbs)
-----------------------------------
quiet on the boxing scene for a while. coming up -

Jan 24 in Tokyo - Naoya Inoue vs Sam Goodman for the undisputed Junior Featherweight title.

Feb 1 in Las Vegas - (PPV) David Benavidez vs. David Morrell Jr. for the WBC Interim Light Heavyweight title.

and Feb 22 in Saudi Arabia - (PPV) Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol for the undisputed Light Heavyweight titles. also on that card - Daniel Dubois vs Joseph Parker for the IBF Heavyweight title - and Shakur Stevenson vs Floyd Schofield for the WBC Lightweight title.

We've heard this before department --

Tyson Fury announces his retirement from boxing.

if this sounds familiar - it's because Fury also announced he was retiring in 2013 and 2017 - and returned to boxing both times.

Fury is coming off two losses to Oleksandr Usyk, putting his career record at 34-2-1.

there have been rumors about a bout between Fury and Anthony Joshua. some are speculating that Fury's "retirement" is a ploy to get a larger purse for the Joshua fight.

been slow on the boxing scene. things should pick up in February with several interesting cards.
