The Takeover with the upset. Teofimo Lopez wins Unanimous decision over Josh Taylor to win the WBO Jr. Welterweight title and become a Champion in two weight classes for his career. Two judges had Lopez winning 7 rounds to 5; one judge had it 9 rounds to 3. I don't know how they gave Taylor 5 rounds - 4 is stretching it. Lopez may be loony, but the dude can fight when his mind is right.

On July 1, Top Rank has a card featuring some of its best young prospects, led by undefeated Heavyweight Jared "The Real Big Baby" Anderson.

Main event: at heavyweight, rising contender Jared "The real Big Baby" Anderson won a unanimous decision over former Heavyweight Champ Charles Martin. Anderson had the only knockdown. Martin did land a few shots and had Anderson in trouble in one round, but Anderson shook it off and both fighters were on their feet at the finish.

Crawford floored Spence in Round 2 and twice in Round 7 to capture the IBF, WBA and WBC 147-pound titles to go along with his WBO belt.

Heck of a fight Saturday night - Navarrete vs Valdez.

In the main event, Emanuel Navarrete with a unanimous decision over Oscar Valdez for the WBO Super Featherweight title. Navarrete seemed to injure his right hand, while Valdez' right eye was closed by the end of the bout. CompuBox had Navarrete throwing over 1,000 punches in the 12-round contest.

An "interesting" day of boxing - with low blows figuring prominently.

in Wroclaw, Poland - Oleksandr Usyk won by KO in the 9th round over Daniel Dubois to defend his WBA, IBF and WBO Heavyweight titles. the controversy came in the 5th round - Dubois hit Usyk with a body shot that was ruled a low blow by the referee. the ref gave Usyk almost 5 minutes to recover. replay showed the punch was below the top of the trunks, but did not appear to hit the groin area. Dubois and his manager said he should have won the fight and called for a rematch.

Saturday in Vegas - Canelo Alvarez faced Jermell Charlo for the undisputed Super Middleweight championship.

Canelo won by unanimous decision. the scorecards had it 119-108, 118-109 & 118-109. Canelo had the only knockdown of the fight in the 7th round.

Charlo is the current undisputed Champ at 154 lbs, but moved up two weight classes to face Canelo. Charlo's twin brother Jermall was originally supposed to fight Canelo, but dropped out of the bout due to "personal issues."

next up on the boxing calendar - Oct. 14 in Texas - a Middleweight title fight between (spell check) Janibek Alimkhanuly and Vincenzo Gualtieri. the undercard features up-and-comers Keyshawn Davis (lightweight), Richard Torrez (heavyweight) and Duke Ragan (featheweight)

also on the 14th, Tim Tszyu defends his Junior Middleweight title in Australia. on Oct 28, Tyson Fury faces Francis Ngannou in a heavyweight bout (we think...with Fury, who knows?)
 

Big boxing TV news - Showtime will no longer show PBC events after this year.

For 37 years, "Showtime Championship Boxing" has televised some of the biggest fights in the sport, but Showtime will exit boxing programming at the end of 2023, the network's parent company Paramount Global announced in a statement Tuesday.

"As we evolve our strategy to more efficiently allocate resources and align our content offering across the business, we've made the difficult decision not to move forward with boxing and other content produced by the SHOWTIME sports team," the company said. "SHOWTIME will continue to air and support the remaining 2023 boxing slate and honor obligations through the end of the year.

Al Haymon's PBC has an exclusive deal with Showtime and has been the main provider of fights on the network since 2013. That included the sport's top star at the time, Floyd Mayweather.

PBC did not comment on the matter.

The face of boxing is now Canelo Alvarez, who signed a three-fight deal with PBC this summer. He retained his undisputed super middleweight championship last month with a victory over Jermell Charlo on Showtime pay-per-view. The only event on the Showtime Boxing calendar right now is a Nov. 25 fight in Las Vegas between David Benavidez and Demetrius Andrade.

PBC is exploring broadcast deals with Amazon Prime Video and DAZN, which has a partnership with Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing and Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, sources told ESPN.
 



Tyson Fury almost loses to MMA fighter.

In a shocking turn of events, Tyson Fury was forced to survive a third-round knockdown to eke past Francis Ngannou via split decision Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

One judge scored it 95-94 for Ngannou, the former UFC heavyweight champion, but was overruled by tallies of 96-93 and 95-94 for Fury. Fury's WBC heavyweight title wasn't on the line in the 10-round boxing match. Ngannou was making his pro boxing debut in his first fight since January 2022.

England's Fury was installed as a -1400 favorite to win the match. He moves on to an undisputed heavyweight championship fight against Oleksandr Usyk despite arguably his worst performance against Ngannou.

The Fury-Usyk fight, perhaps the biggest in boxing, is already signed and planned for Dec. 23 in Riyadh, but it's unclear if the fight will happen on that date. Fury was cut over his left eye and forehead and suffered damage against Ngannou. He would have to turn around and fight Usyk in less than two months.
 

well, an odd night of Boxing in Vegas.

main event - Shakur Stevenson wins the WBC Lightweight title with a unanimous decision over Edwin De Los Santos. Crowd was booing throughout most of the fight due to lack of action. Stevenson basically just jabbed and moved out of range. for the 12-round fight, Stevenson landed 65 total punches and De Los Santos landed 40. that's an average per round of 5.4 to 3.3 punches landed. might be the most boring title fight I've ever seen.

co-main: Emanuel Navarrete vs Robson Conceicao ends in a majority draw. 1 judge had Navarrete winning by 2 pts but the other 2 judges had it as a draw. Navarrete retains the WBO Jr Lightweight Title. Conceicao won more rounds but was knocked down twice.

Heavyweight Joseph Parker won a majority decision over Zhilei Zhang. Judges had it 113-113, 114-112 & 115-111. Zhang had knocked Parker down twice, but Parker landed more punches including a 79-40 advantage in power punches. there is a rematch clause so they could fight again.

I never was a big boxing fan, but had a friend take me to "fight night in NY". I don't remember who all was on the cards, but definitely remember that seeing a boxing match live is WAY more impressive than seeing one on TV. A totally different experience. You just don't see the power, quickness and speed on TV. Lesson learned => if you've never been to a high-level boxing match in person, put it on your bucket list and do it.

Main event (Heavyweight) Jared Anderson wins unanimous decision over Ryad Merhy. Merhy, a former Cruiserweight champ, was just there for the paycheck. he only landed 34 punches to 128 for Anderson. crowd was booing most of the fight.
