Blasingame Become Commit #11!

The guy said he hopes neither of the teams playing in the championship game offer our verbal or he may be swayed. You responded by saying he knows very little about the south.

Simmer.

Northern universities by and large are still higher quality than those in the South. That's hardly a groundbreaking or controversial statement, and one that even most Southerners recognize. Their commitment to public education is far less (though many Northern states are trying change that). Whether or not that has to do with Khari's recruitment, however, I have no idea.

Anyway.....love this commit so very much. Smart kid and fills a big need. If we can also get Craig James I'll be happy as punch.

*sigh* i am not going to get into this argument. we'd have to define what universities we are talking about, what is considered the south and what is the north and how we can quantify how one university is considered better than another. however, i wouldn't mind discussing higher education differences between the midwest. i'd be interested in a comparison of the top ten southern universities with the top ten midwestern universities. but you're right, this is not the place for it.

wtf does that mean? can you explain how universities in the south are worse at providing good educations than universities in the north?

sometimes minnesotans can be as bad as southerners in the obstinate provincialism.

I tend to agree. I know it's Useless News & World Distort, but their rankings have three SEC universities above Minnesota (Vanderbilt, Georgia, and Florida) in their annual rankings.

I think a kid can get the education they want and need at pretty much any major university. I think the overweening importance of athletics at some major universities may put players in an uncomfortable position when it comes to priorities, but Kill stresses the importance of the academic side of the ledger and I'm sure that impresses a lot of recruits and their families.

What he said was if FSU or Auburn offer we would have difficulty keeping him. The fact that Blasingame's parents, insisted that he take an official visit to Northwestern, indicates that their priorities aren't football.

I am just somewhat in agreement with bigtenchamps1899 on our provincialism. I'm a lifelong Minnesotan and we've got a great state university where kids can get a great education. But that's true a lot of places, including in the South.

I would never conjecture what Blasingame and his parents are seeking, but I can't help but believe that Kill's strong commitment to making sure the team is in class and study sessions and working hard on that side of things impressed them.

Indeed, and that's counting Baltimore as the South, which would probably come as a surprise to the people that live there.

I've gotten into a discussion over this, because I used to think the same thing. Maryland is below the Mason-Dixon Line, and considers themselves part of the South.

Maryland is below the Mason Dixon line because in the 18th century it was part of the South when the Mason Dixon line was "drawn". Today? It's far more tied to the Northeast Corridor and has been for decades. We must be talking to different people because the Marylanders I know don't consider themselves Southern and vice versa.

I agree. I could have created a Northeast area, but chose to do a triangle instead of a square for simplicity.

His parents wanted him to visit Northwestern. therefor we can conclude two things:
1) he would have no interest in attending either of the schools playing in the national championship game
2) the poster who thought we might have some work to do to keep our commit if auburn or FSU offered knows zero about the south

D'ok

where is university of virginia? duke? emery? william and mary? vmi? annapolis? george washington? tulane? georgia tech? clemson? wake forest? virginia tech? if we include texas, then rice? smu? UT?

your rankings are completely subjective. can you tell me the quantifiable difference between the 50th and the 150th ranked university in the world?

All it takes is an Auburn or FSU to get serious after the title game and we could be holding on for dear life. Signing day is still 7 weeks away.

Great get so far.
Yes. See Nate Godwin and Nate Andrews last year prior to signing day.

Mmmmmm, not so sure about that. Parents are about education first, which is why they insisted he visit N'Western despite him wanting to commit after his visit to the U. I can't see them letting him attend any of the SEC football factories. If Notre Dame or Stanford got involved, maybe.

That is what I was getting at earlier but it goes beyond education. There are barriers at southern schools too making the kind of personal connections that help later in life. In the south black or white you can find your networking opportunities limited if you come from the wrong side of the tracks. They call them 'good old boy networks for a reason.

I wanted this kid badly. I think he brings a "Joey Browner" type presence to the DEFENSE!!! I love what this coaching staff has done on D. I hope he develops into a huge will tempered safety (in a smart kind of way). :)

I'll partially comply with your desire. As far as the quantifiable difference, I don't have time to work that out.

U Virginia, 100-150. Fell out of the top 100 in the last few years.
Virginia Military Institute is not in the ARWU rankings in the top 1200.
William and Mary. Recently in the top 500. No longer.
Annapolis is a NATIONAL university, so it is not particularly regional. Same with George Washington. Would you consider that Southern because DC was at one time part of Maryland? I don't think so.
Tulane, ranked between 300 and 400, and dropping like a rock in recent years.
Georgia INSTITUTE of Technology, top 100 - 150.
Duke comes in at 31. Respectable. Below the U.
Clemson, 300-400. Falling like a rock in the last 10 years.
Wake Forest, previously 152, now in the 300's.
Virginia Tech, consistently in the top 152 - 200.
Texas, ranked nicely at 36th.

Everyone of these World class universities rank below Minnesota.
Lets compare Duke and Minnesota.

Duke is a great university. No doubt about it. Minnesota kicks butt in some categories that produce real results.

If you want formulas, go geek out on your own. I am not the driver of the research on performance of schools. But, I find that the performance of research Duke and Minnesota are almost equal. Duke leads in terms of capturing dollars and making good use of those dollars.

Minnesota however, beats out 98.25 % of the top 1200 world universities in many categories

If Blasingame chose Minnesota, he was smart to do it over almost all the football helmet schools. Duke would have been the best of the choices in the South, by a wide margin. They have quite the academic recruiting tool. But, so does Minnesota, with an equally impressive list of credentials.

Only 2 universities of the top 35 come from the south. I cut it off there because I became board of a visual count.
The north had 15. The ratio is too huge to ignore. Some of those schools don't consider themselves part of the south, like Johns Hopkins.

Not disagreeing, but Blasingame's Mother is a Podiatrist and I presume his Father is successful as well. He's not from the wrong side of the tracks. More like the Huxtables from what I can piece together.

Let me ask you this! Even if they are successful do you think that they are plugged into the 'Good Old Boy' network? It's awareness of the barriers that, while they are eroding they still exist, that would keep a kid from choosing an SEC school. The smaller the town the bigger the barriers.

One of the best things about this commit is all the "Wade Blasingame" references that are possible from the classic Will Ferrell SNL skit.

If you haven't seen it, I linked at the bottom of my most recent blog post: http://recessionproofminnesota.blogspot.com/2013/12/2013-gopher-awards-recap.html

Keep the good recruits coming. I love our ability to identify (and coach up) talent in the secondary. Hopefully this is the next step there.

Awesome when Ferrell used the name, but I am so old I actually witnessed the real Wade Blasingame pitch a game for the Milwaukee Braves in 1965.

Does he practice judo? Browner is my favorite Viking of all time and the most underrated. If you are close to correct I think were in for a big treat.

I guess his Mother is the explanation for his uncommonly good feet.
