Big Ten has Canceled All Athletics for Rest of School Year

Press release:

Earlier today the Big Ten announced it was canceling all remaining athletic competitions for the remainder of the academic year and suspending recruiting efforts.

University of Minnesota Athletics Director Mark Coyle has issued the following statement

We agree with the Big Ten's decision to cancel all athletic competitions through the end of the school year. We also support the conference's decision to suspend all on-campus and off-campus recruiting efforts for the foreseeable future. At this time, we are working on arranging transportation for our teams who are competing out of state to return to Minneapolis. We will provide all necessary resources for our student-athletes, coaches and staff during this difficult time. Our main priority is to ensure the safety of our student-athletes, coaches, staff, administrators, fans and media as we continue to monitor the COVID-19 virus.

I wonder if this means practices are cancelled too. I could see all our different althletics wanting to at least keep practicing if possible so there isn't any sort of regression of ability in the athletes.

I can't see how spring practice is not done. Players are probably off for spring break. Simply: don't come back. Stay home.

Penn State canceled practices...

Local schools are cancelling all after school events one by one.

I suspect it is a matter of time practices are canceled at least for a while.

I got an email to my old U email (didn't realize it was still forwarding to my personal email) saying it included practices:

"Earlier today the Big Ten announced it was canceling all remaining athletic competition for the remainder of the school year and suspending all organized team practices."

NHL postponed their season too...what the hell am I supposed to watch now? Chick flicks?

Remember when we used to say the sports dead period was after the NCAA tournament. Well it just started now. I suppose we'll still have the masters, with no fans. Although I have a feeling it will get cancelled too, because golfers aren't going to want to fly anywhere.

Let's hope these drastic steps get this epidemic under control so there's a fall football season.

the suspension of all activity includes recruiting. Imagine all those D1 Coaches going absolutely bat-bleep crazy because they can't go out and recruit.

I picture Fleck literally bouncing off the walls.

Good idea actually, Penn State would be one worth a couple rewatches too. I might rewatch all the games from last season. I like your thinking ??

The only thing is - they keep replaying tOSU games in prime time hours! You'd have to wait until 1:00 AM to 4:00 AM to watch the Gophers games. Slight BTN bias there.

Plus, I don't think we'd ever see the Outback Bowl because it was ESPN and never made it to a 1-hour game as far as I know. :(

If it is going on then....we got other issues.
This virus won’t be going away until one of two things happens:
1) everyone (who leaves their home ever) has been infected, and either dies or gains immunity the old fashioned way
2) a safe, effective vaccine is widespread distributed to the population

And 2) might not even happen by the end of this calendar year, when it’s all said and done.

It seems HIGHLY unlikely it wouldn't reach it's peak / exposure to most people long before football season.

The current measures are only intended to slow it.

Not at all saying you’re wrong. So you’re banking one #1, then?

This virus has defied all attempts at containment, so far.

I DVR’d the entire season on my Hulu with live TV. It would really suck if I hadn’t, because you’re right there’s some serious bias. I hardly ever see Gopher football replays

I don't think there is ever 100% infection as much as a population that has had so many people exposed that they are immune enough that anyone left isn't likely to be exposed.

That is to say....the usual way the flu fades.

Thanks. In OTB corona thread, a more knowledgeable poster than I (not hard, I know) was explaining about this. And that this is likely to happen before a vaccine could ever be developed.

Yeah last I heard trials would begin only as the usual seasonal flu would usually fade. That takes time too...let alone production.

Still, as I posed there, even if “only” 1/3 of our population gets infected, and the overall death rate is “only” 0.1%, that’s 110k dead.

My man, if you don't have that bad boy on your DVR in all its 3:20 glory with a blue "Keep" button next to its name, may God have mercy on your soul.

Just go on YouTube, they have the full games with commercials cut out

It appears that Basketball Conference Tournaments will begin again in about a week.
