Assistant Coaches

I think I mentioned this on a separate thread previously, but I’d keep eye out for Ali F , as a potential candidate, assistant any Col St as well ....

honest question....but why? is there some sort of connection or is he just an up and comer?

I just hope that whoever Johnson hires that the pissing moaning doesn't continue. Johnson knows what he needs, what type of person he wants to work with etc. Many of us are positive about Johnson. If you're that upset about him. Put your head in a pile of manure and take a break for a while.

Why so defensive? You seem to be one of many that don't want to hear anything you deem a negative opinion. So many openly negative posters (not you necessarily) now with the sudden change of heart. I am newer to GH than most on here, is Pitino Derangement Syndrome a real thing? Seems like some were suffering so bad that literally any option other than Pitino is a vast improvement. Only time will tell I suppose, but if you really are that upset, maybe it is you that need to take a break and stop projecting on to others.

That would be a real kick in the dick to Niko. Not only do you lose out on your dream job but the less qualified* guy then immediately nabs 2 of your 3 assistant coaches!

*less qualified meant objectively based solely on years of head coaching experience and not meant to indicate lack of support in current MBHCC or overall state of program. Member FDIC.

You're right, only time will tell. And that amount of time is going to be at least 2 years before any real judgement can be passed. So, are you going to continue to post negative comments questioning our ADs decision for the next 2 years? Or where is the point where you start actually looking forward to see what kind of players, coaches and systems Ben gets into place?

Is there a scenario where you gain joy out of any of this? Isn't that the whole point of being a fan?

With Lon Kruger retiring, Jim Molinari (a GopherLady favorite) is available

Most people have admitted to the shock of the hire. It has not even been a week yet since the decision, when honestly there wasn't much reason not to take this week to interview as many qualified candidates possible. A lot of discussion generated on how it went down, and with a fan base yearning for a change, not going to go away quickly. Since Johnson has no body of work as a head coach to discuss, I wouldn't expect everyone to forget until we actually find out who will be on the roster and who we sign this spring. Hopefully we do have something else to talk about soon that can be viewed as unanimously positive. Also, if Johnson wins this talk will evaporate. Every offseason with Pitino was like this until games were played. Every recruit he was after was a miss until they actually signed. Then after every loss, same thing until the next game. Hard to speculate on what he's going to do as there is no tape of him as a head coach and he didn't get real specific in the opening presser on what he wants to do.

It's also fair for many of us to be apprehensive until we start seeing a product on the court. Many of us invest time and money into this. Many are deciding whether it's worth it or not. Some didn't care as much about whether AAU and HS coaches like the new incoming coach already and were more interested in getting a winner. Some will always just be unhappy and this is a perfect sounding board.

I personally am getting annoyed by people telling me I have to just relax and enjoy this hire however. Not everyone is in love with our provincialism here. I do not like this hire currently and until I see a team that goes out and defends, I'll be cynical when it's fair to do so. I'm also going to give Ben tons of credit before the seasons if he puts together a good staff and pulls some nice transfers. We don't all have to be happy and open right away.

I didn't say you or anyone had to "enjoy" anything. But how many freaking times can people post the same message with different words in the course of three days? That's the definition of insanity.

It's very ridiculous that this board has been totally polluted (in nearly EVERY thread) by the same 4-6 posters regurgitating their disappointment and shock over and over and over with a few different words changed.

If this were 6 months ago you would be Alchemy2u and it would be posters talking about firing Pitino, this will never end, the only thing that changes is the head coach!

I think you definitely want a veteran as your lead assistant. With Clem, if I recall correctly, it was Al Brown. Clem also brought in a young Dave Thorson, who had only been a volunteer assistant in South Dakota but eventually assumed a full assistant position here. So, a combo of experienced and young.
Clem’s #1 assistant for most of his tenure was Milton Barnes he left head coach at Eastern Michigan. I recall Al Brown also, but I don’t recall the context of his position...

Of course you're being sarcastic, but he's an assistant at Memphis. We probably couldn't get him even if we wanted him.

Are you saying Saul Smith is an assistant at Memphis? Is this 2017?

He's not still there? Memphis needs a new web master then...

You have to go to the active webpage and look under coaching staff. Saul did not stick around after his dad got fired in 2018. You found an old page on a Google search.

Definitely defense.

Ostrom is a good shout. He was the primary recruiter for Miller's three biggest commits in Romeo Langford, Trayce Jackson-Davis and Khristian Lander (Lander hasn't really panned out yet).

Ostrom also was lead recruiter in getting McKinley Wright to commit to Dayton and getting Race Thompson to go to Indiana.

If Ben Johnson can get Ostrom on staff, he absolutely should.

Guy is a rock star recruiter with strong, strong Minnesota ties.

Truthfully it's a message board and this always happens. Currently it's Ben Johnson, previously it was Pitino's offense, Pitino not getting a MN recruit, Tubby being lazy, The U not wanting to win and allowing Royce and Trevor to be eligible, etc...

Again it's great that some have euphoria over Ben getting the job. The hire is also extremely fresh and people are going to be skeptical until their is a product on the board. Welcome to D1 basketball message board. We are tame compared some some others.

Thorson, Ostrom, and Conroy would honestly be fine to me too. I don't feel the need for a young recruiter with Ben as the HC.

McKinley Wright committed to Dayton?

Yeah he decommitted when Miller took the IU job. Pitino had two shots at him, but already had a class of IW and Harris in the spring so he asked Wright to redshirt.
Fact or speculation on redshirt? The two things I heard were that he had an offer and waited and Washington claimed it and there were potential admission challenges.
