Andre Hollins on KFAN

Read all of the lead up comments, please. Look, I know Winona and the surrounding area, and I know those Hillbillies of SE MN can read.

Come'on Don, we aren't all hillbillies. Some more than others. I like to consider myself half n half.

I thought we were his second choice... he came for an official visit, did he not?

He did visit. Stopped by my place of business with Silas McKinnie. His mother was a teacher in St. Paul for a time.

If I remember correctly Webber was at a Gophers-Michigan State football game and Izzo (this was when he was Jud's top asst) saw him in a luxury box wearing a Gophers hat or something and immediately freaked out and reported it to the NCAA. Webber was so pissed that he swore he'd never play for Michigan State.

At that point it's really not too much of a stretch to think we could have had the best recruiting class in the nation. Webber and Rose were probably going to go to school together wherever and we already had Voshon in that recruiting class who went to HS with Rose. That would have been a sweet team!

That's the story. While the "violation" was being looked into, Rick Bay told Clem to cease and desist recruiting him. That might have made the difference, although there's no way to know for sure.

Tubby was too nice of a guy. I am sure he knew that he would have a better team if Andre played 2 instead of 1 , but he gave him a chance to develop point guard skills at expense of the team to increase his pro chances. I expect Dre made this deal when he was recruited here. It really hurt the pro chances of Mbawke and Williams, who would have thrived with a break down point guard and a fllor spacing 2 . I am not so sure that deal exists.

Tubby played Andre at pg because it gave the team the best chance to win.

Coaches don't 'prepare' a player for the nba at the expense of the team.

I think you could use Andre the same way that Clem used Bobby Jackson - off the ball for the most part but as a situational ball handler as well. In a lot of situations in that 1997 season, Jackson was the primary ball handler late in games.

More so as the 'go to play-maker'.

You left out the part about how we had to quit recruiting Webber because of the incident. Really good chance we would have landed him. Clem was pretty good at recruiting Detroit.

Couldn't agree more with this idea/concept. Also, Andre would absolutely flourish playing with a PG like Eric Harris.

I'm 43 and have always been a recruiting fanatic. I couldn't wait to see if Sid had any tidbits in his column every morning. The 3 biggest recruiting battles that we lost out on (with a legit chance to sign them) that I can recall were Chris Weber, Jerry Gee and Doug Wrenn. Interesting that only one of them really panned out.

I don't think we had much chance at Wrenn. Clem signed Kevin Burleson for the single purpose of tryin to land Wrenn (if I remember correctly).

I used to do the same thing back in the day when Sid was the only source of recruiting information. You forgot to mention Tom Hammonds who ended up at Georgia Tech.

I'll never forget the first time Jerry Gee played at the barn as a member of the Fighting Illini. I was in 1st or 2nd grade at the time and didn't quite understand the significance of missing out on the big time recruit. I'm not even sure of the outcome, but I remember everytime he stepped to the foul line, the entire arena chanted, "Jerrrry....Jerrrry....Jerrrry...". I'm fairly certain he clanged a few key free throws down the stretch to help ice it for the gophs. This was one of my first memories of the barn.

BS; Andre had to play point because Tubby never bothered to recruit a PG

That, or Tubby misjudged Andre's skill set and thought he could play PG in the big ten. Either way it held the team back this year, and I say that even though I thought Andre did well considering what he was asked to do.

At the time and for a few years after, it was reasonable to think we "almost got" Chris Webber. However, now that the truth's come out regarding the $150,000+ in payments he received from the Michigan booster, I don't think anyone but Michigan can say they realistically had a chance.

...and Glen Rice, who was the same year as Hammonds. Gophs were a serious bridesmaid in those days!
