All Things TCU Road Game Thread: What to See, Do, Travel Plans & More...

Not sure if it has been posted here, but I got confirmation this morning from Gopher Sports that you will be able to buy tickets to the 'Sota social on Friday night and the official pre-game tailgate separate from the Overall package!

Flight, Hotel, and Game Tickets all purchased. GoldysPop and I are ready to party Texas style.

Question for anyone who has attended a significant event at AT&T Stadium. The Gopher/TCU game will likely be over around 6:30 and just across town, UCLA and Texas will be at AT&T Stadium. IAM4Goldy and I were thinking of trying to go to that game for the second half or so. Is parking a complete mess, i.e. is it even worth trying to go after our game?

Thanks.

Go Gophers!!

We were at the "Texas Shootout" a few years ago (Baylor and Texas Tech). There was sufficient parking, but like everything in Texas, everything is very spread out. I remember walking a great distance from the parking lots to the stadium. The stadium is impressive. Definitely worth a visit.

Nope. You can probably grab any cheap ticket, then move down to more premium seats once the game starts.

I wouldn't bet on that working for this game. And if the Minnesota game is as hot and miserable as that one was, folks will be looking for shade and AC.

Some of us TCU fans have a message board with info for being making a game at TCU with lots of hints and ideas for the area that you are welcome to visit.

The best bet would be to park at the Lincoln Square shopping center. You can eat there or buy gift cards and park for free. It is not a long walk and it is easier to exit the area from there.

Thanks for this post. Glad to see there is a cab stand close to the stadium as this will be our mode of transport to and from the game from downtown FW.

From the David Shama column: Both the Gophers and Stillwater-based Creative Charters are sponsoring fan trips to Minnesota’s game in Fort Worth against Texas Christian on September 13. The trip is something new for the athletic department, while Creative Charters has been organizing football and basketball trips for many years.

O’Brien said the intent of the TCU trip is to allow fans to get “closer to the team.” Part of the fun will be having the Gophers Marching Band in Fort Worth. But other than the TCU travel package (a few openings remain) and a possible bowl game trip, the athletic department has no further plans for fan travel. “We have zero interest in doing it more than once a year,” O’Brien said. http://shamasportsheadliners.com/

Which sections will Gopher fans be sitting in? I'm going to be in Fort Worth already the week of the game, so I'll just be buying tickets.

Haven't gotten our official seats from the gopher ticket office yet. Been trying to figure out where their opposing fans sit and it appears to be in a corner of one of the endzones. I know that gives you a 1/4 chance but will post seat location as soon as I have tickets in hand.

Checking the TCU Site, their public onsale for the Gopher game is 8/25/2014 at 8:00 am. Looking forward to my first Gopher Football road trip!

Has anyone figured out what the best HS game to attend on Friday night?

Frog fan here from Fort Worth, I can give you my two cents on any weekend plans you're cooking up. We are looking forward to having the Gophers in town next month!

The Stockyards and nearby Joe T. Garcia's are the most touristy things going on in FW. Joe T's is nowhere close to the best Tex-Mex in town, but the atmosphere is pretty fun and it's definitely a great place for a first-time visitor. Real, real strong margaritas. Would be a perfect pre-tailgate brunch spot, but you'll want to get there early as there will be a line.

If you're into art, there are a couple of museums here that are of a quality level you'd expect to find in a bigger city. My favorite is the Modern Art Museum. They are a point of pride for Fort Worth, so I'm obligated to point them out to you. My guess is that you're coming to party, though, so the nearby West 7th area is the easiest spot to find a number of fun spots. Parking sucks, though.

As for pre/post-game eats & drinks near campus, me recommendations are as follows:
-Fred's Texas TCU on Bluebonnet Circle about a mile away. Good burgers, real cold beer and fun atmosphere.

-Fuzzy's- which offers good tacos and cheap beer. Will be extremely crowded right before and after the game.

-Dutch's/The Pub. As close to the stadium as you can get, just a straight shot through campus. Dutch's is one of my favorite burgers in Fort Worth, and The Pub is a good, old-fashioned college bar.

-The Aardvark- A TCU institution, and a decent place to drink for cheap and see some live music close by. They apparently serve food there now, but I've never tried it so I can't recommend it. If you're dreaming of hooking up with a TCU coed, this might be the place. If you're not enamored by a crowd of 19-21 year old fraternity and sorority kids, you might not like it.

-The Cellar is dark, dingy and where I celebrate big Frog wins. This place is a genuine dive bar, not a trendy faux-dive spot for posers. It's underground, and the ceiling is pretty low- so if you're above about 6'4" or worried about the fact that the place is a blatant fire hazard it may not be your spot. You'll meet some characters here, as everyone is having a good time- though the shuffle board and air-hockey can get pretty competitive. I also should also note here that, because it's still legal to smoke indoors in Fort Worth (most places voluntarily ban it, though), this place will make you smell like cigarettes for weeks.

I see some talk about going to a Friday night high school game, which I love. Allen, as mentioned, is currently THE program in the state. Their QB, A&M-bound Kyler Murray, is the real deal. They play at McKinney Boyd that weekend, which is a pretty good hike from FW or even Dallas. My recommendation, if you're looking for the true Texas "Friday Night Lights" experience, is the Aledo game. The Bearcats are a defending state champs in the second-highest classification, and are expected to contend again. Their stadium is only 15-20 minutes from central FW, and they're playing a team from Mexico that weekend. The other option I might recommend to the casual fan is the Paschal vs. Dallas Woodrow Wilson game at Farrington Field. It may not be as big of a crowd or as entertaining a game, but Farrington is directly adjacent to the West 7th area so you can ditch the game and grab drinks whenever you feel like it.

Shoot me any other questions and I'll try to steer you in the right direction.

According to the seating chart, Gopher fans will be in both corners of the north end zone, sections 412-416 and 226-229:

Thanks Frog Guy. I appreciate the info.

I'm particularly interested in your FNL recommendations as we want a true Texas HS football game experience that night. How far is Allen from FW?

Would the game against the team from Mexico have the same atmosphere as two schools that have a history and know each other?

Do you have to get tickets in advance at these stadiums or can you just walk up before the game?

Thanks.

Go Gophers!!

Thanks for the tips! Our group coming down likes the traditional tailgate. Do you have any tips on that?

A certain lot to go to? Are they season ticket pass only or can we pay cash at the gate? How far from stadium?, etc..

The last game seems like the logical choice. A team from St. Paul and alma mater of Tony Levine who is my all-time favorite Gopher and current HC at Houston. Furthermore, my wife use to work there which probably explains all the long nights and why she didn't come home sometimes. I never knew it was such a long commute for her.

Would the game against the team from Mexico have the same atmosphere as two schools that have a history and know each other?

An Aledo home game and Bearcat fans will generally provide enough atmosphere for two teams. The team they're playing that night, Monterrey Tech, has been accused over the years of bringing older players down from their collegiate team (Monterrey Tech is a MASSIVE university system in Mexico) to play for their prep team- so that could be an interesting aspect of that game, although I would still expect Aledo to win easily.

All of the games TexasAggie11 mentioned should be a good time. A few others that Friday night within driving distance of FW that ought to be good games are Waxahachie at Ennis (they hate each other), Lancaster at Euless Trinity (Trinity is a long-time DFW powerhouse and usually has a big crowd at home games, Lancaster has gotten good in recent years) and Stephenville at Everman (Stephenville was Art Briles' last HS job, and is just about as close to the fictional Dillon on the FNL TV series as you'll get).

You should be fine walking up to any of these games and getting a ticket.

Here is parking guide from TCU that includes maps and where there are paid & free options available, and policies regarding what is allowed/not allowed in certain lots.

AND
If you need a place to watch The Vikes on Sunday at noon,
TNT Sports Page in north Dallas is homebase for Vikings fans.
I've been there once and it was all Purple.

I recently found out that there is a liquor store close to the stadium for those hoping to grab a case and join in the fun. It is called King's Liquor
2810 W Berry St
Fort Worth, TX 76109
This is just a few blocks away from the stadium.

Gopher Sports is no longer showing the TCU game available for purchase. Has it sold out??

The tickets have been assigned to everyone who bought them and are viewable on mygophersports.com. The U gets the tickets directly from TCU, so they have to stop selling them when it gets a few weeks out.

Gotcha, I literally purchased my two right before they took it down I was hoping I got the final final and we are going to jam the house with Gopher fans.

Do yourselves a favor and check out Spec's. It's at 2750 South Hulen, about a mile from the stadium as the bird flies. However, due to cul-de-sacs in the adjacent neighborhoods, it's about 2.5 miles by car. Stop by there on your way in to the tailgate and feast upon the great selection of local and national brand liquor and beer.

Here's their current newsletter with specials and events.

I'd say that this is a pretty good top 10 list for Texas beer.

However, this list also has some merit, other than ranking Karbach so low.

Bump...not that I am overlooking MTSU, but I am so excited to get down to TCU. Anybody heard info on a Sota Social or the official tailgate? How many charters they got going? I am assuming quite a few people bought through Gophersports as my section is 413 and I am lower on the gopherpoints list and the stadium having 2 visitors sections.
