All Things TCU Road Game Thread: What to See, Do, Travel Plans & More...

The good thing about the trip between the Metroplex and Port Arthur is that the majority of the trip is on I-45, which is in generally good condition without an overabundance of traffic. It's a good interstate drive to put on cruise control and just steer straight ahead without too many turns or much stopping/slowing.

Thanks again. It is kind of a long shot that I will even go, but at least I know what is doable if I do make it to this Gopher game.

Cheers!

CBS profiles TCU's spring practices: Breaking Down the Buzz: TCU

What they're talking about is ... the spring quarterback battle. Trevone Boykin is a rising junior who's already appeard in 24 games in his TCU career, has at times flashed an intriguing dual-threat skillset, and is the only quarterback on the Horned Frog roster who's attempted more than three passes in his career.

Nonetheless, with two new offensive coordinators installing a brand new offense, Boykin doesn't appear safely ensconced as the Frogs' 2014 starter. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram headlined its Tuesday spring notebook "Little clarity at QB with only two spring practices remaining," and reports that redshirt sophomore Tyler Matthews "could still earn the starting job" if he beats out Boykin and true freshmen Foster Sawyer and Grayson Muehlstein -- who will arrive in the summer -- aren't ready.

Any quarterback battle is going to prompt its share of message board speculation, and when you add in that Boykin was less than impressive for much of the Frogs' disappointing 4-8 2013 season, it's even less surprising that boards like Killer Frogs or The Frog Horn are enjoying a healthy discussion on the topic.

Go Gophers!!

Good find Bleed. I'm glad we have a non-conference game this year to truly get excited about.

Does anyone know where the Gophers will stay when they travel for this game?

Thanks.

Go Gophers!!

Does anyone know where the Gophers will stay when they travel for this game? Thanks. Go Gophers!!

I do not. I did receive an email from the U trying to gauge fan interest in setting up a trip, either a 1 or 3 night stay. Our trip is already booked.

Go Gophers!!

I do not know that, either. If you do find out, please let us know, as our group would also consider the team hotel.

I'll be traveling up to Fort Worth from Austin. I can't find anybody to go with yet so might be that guy.

Grrr. Allen High School's $60MM stadium will in fact be closed this Fall.

What's the next best option for a fantastic Friday Night Lights Texas HS football experience?

Go Gophers!!

I'd still watch an Allen game to see Kyler Murray and the team play. The only difference is the venue won't be as impressive.

However, I haven't seen schedules released for the upcoming season, so they might not be at home that week. DeSoto would easily be my next pick.

Outside of that, I would look at Aledo for small town football or either Euless Trinity, Coppell, or Southlake Carroll depending on who is at home and who they are playing.

Just booked my flight on Sun Country. Coming down with 2 other Gopher fans. We're going to the Rangers vs Braves game Friday night, staying in Arlington, and then cabbing it to Fort Worth Saturday morning. We're then staying downtown Fort Worth Saturday night.

Hoping and praying for a later kickoff time. Night game would be great.

Since the new info on the gopher charter, any thoughts on the trip, that hotel, walkability to great bars around there?

We're doing the trip on our own so we can do the things we want and go at our own pace, so I just looked up the rates for a room at the hotel the travel package is through. $289 a night before tax.:mad:

Guess we won't be staying there. Hoping to either find something close to that one, or something in downtown Dallas that would be closer to more attractions.

Flying Saucer, great beer selection, one block away.

Pete's Piano Bar, really fun but you can drop a lot of money here, four blocks away.

The Library, yes just like the one in Dinkytown, four blocks away.

Frankie's, sports bar with lots of TVs, will likely be the A&M game watching HQ, four blocks away.

Best restaurants within two blocks are Reata, Riscky's, and Del Frisco.

Just saw Phil Steele has TCU ranked 14th in his 2014 final rankings prediction. Sounds like they'll be quite a bit better than a lot of people on here think.

Hey Gophers. Looking forward to seeing you in September for the "Unique Mascots Formerly Coached by Jim Wacker" Bowl. Just wanted to comment on all the suggestions that the Aggie has been throwing your way. For the most part, his advice is pretty good. HOWEVER, please don't come all this way and then spend your time in Dallas. No true Fort Worthian would ever, ever suggest such an itinerary. Maybe drive around Dealey Plaza for a bit if you're interested in the Kennedy Assassination, but then hurry back.

In addition to lots of great restaurants and bars downtown, West 7th Street (just a mile or two west of downtown) is probably a little livelier. Also, Magnolia Street in the hospital district close to campus is really picking up steam, especially with the foodie types. If you bring kids, get to the game early and let them play in "Frog Alley," a kid zone with games, bounce houses, etc.

Most importantly, be sure to stop by a tailgate and say hi. We're mostly a friendly bunch.

Oh, and for those hoping to catch some good HS football on Friday night, unfortunately Southlake Carroll is on the road that week, but Euless Trinity and Aledo both have home games. Trinity, like Southlake, is a perennial top school in our biggest classification, while Aledo is rediculously dominant in the second-highest classification. Other state and national powerhouses are in neighboring counties. Cedar Hill, Allen, Coppell and DeSoto should all be very good. The Dallas Skyline at Cedar Hill game that weekend should be really, really good. Might have to go to that one myself.

Happy to answer any questions y'all might have on here, too.

Hey, gotta represent ALL of the Metroplex and give these good out-of-state folks their options. :)

The Dallas Skyline at Cedar Hill game that weekend should be really, really good.

I absolutely LOVE Cedar Hill today. A&M picked up verbals from a 5* WR and a 3* LB for our already ridiculous 2015 class this afternoon. They just need to change their dang mascot. Luckily the game on the 12th is at Skyline, so you don't have to look at Cedar Hill's hideous field. This should be a good game to go to.

Thanks for the info GoFrogs, much appreciated. And TexasAggie11, thanks for your continued contributions as well.

We're planning on hitting up the Skyline at Cedar Hill game. Do we need to get tickets in advance or earlier that day, or can we just show up prior to game time?

Will the West 7th Street or Magnolia Street have any pre-game activity for the non-tailgate crowd?

Thanks.

Go Gophers!!

Honestly, no clue about getting tickets for the HS game. I looked online but couldn't find any instructions. I'd probably call the school closer to game day. As for pre-game activity, Fort Worth isn't a "college town" where a home game dominates the local calendar. Everywhere but the campus area will be regular Saturday business as usual. There will probably be some fans grabbing a bite in both the West 7th and Magnolia areas before heading to the parking lots, but really only the restaurants within a mile or so of campus will be likely to have some actual pre-game activity. Just about any place on University from I-30 to Bluebonnet Circle, and on Berry within a few blocks of campus, should have a good pre-game crowd.

Thanks for all the information but I wouldn't mess with TXAggie. Just check out the epic Texas Tech thread here on GH and you'll know what I mean ;-)

I'm done taking digs at TCU. They got the last laugh anyway, by passing "Coach" Fran on to us by way of Bama. We're just now recovering from that one. Thanks, Frogs. :)

Dallas Skyline *typically* plays at Forester Field, a few blocks away from the school itself. However no Dallas team actually "owns" a particular stadium and the game may be played elsewhere. Like GoFrogs said, check with the school.

Here's Cedar Hill (Lodge and Moore are our commits now).

There will probably be some fans grabbing a bite in both the West 7th and Magnolia areas

Not real sure of the dynamic in play here, but the whole "Aggie giving TCU gameday advice with A&M recruiting updates" thread was definitely unexpected. Feel free to stop by KillerFrogs.com this summer. Now that baseball's out of the CWS, we'll soon be back to 1) arguing over who should be our starting QB, 2) arguing over whether our O-line will be historically awful or just kinda bad, and 3) non-stop chest puffing about our defense. Would love to have actual football discussions with actual footbal fans. Between the Tech and Baylor trolls who insist that last season proves our Rose Bowl team would have been sub .500 in the Big 12, plus a few idiots of our own, it's been a loooong offseason.

My regrets on your Frogs getting knocked out of the CWS. We usually go to Omaha each year for it. When we do go, I let my son pick a team and then buy him their team jersey and hat. A few years back when you guys were in it, he couldn't resist the whole "Fear the Frog" thing and was decked out in purple that series :).

I also recall TCU playing in the Dairy Queen Classic several years ago at the former Metro Dump. The reason I probably remember TCU being in it is because of the kids baseball clinic held as part of it. Each participating team offers up coaches and players to provide instruction. TCU did the base running component. It was by far the best and most fun clinic for the kids that I ever witnessed at the tournament. The TCU coaches and players were incredibly high energy and fun :). Kudos!

We have the same thing going on here with posters. Some WI skunk and IA hog-eye trolls plus a few GH idiots. A couple of the GH's on here are very parochial which frankly can be a MN thing. If you encounter any of them, just ignore them like most of us other GH's. The majority of us appreciate having thoughtful discussions and getting the perspectives of opposing fans.

But back to football. For the first time in memory, we don't have a QB controversy heading into the season (of course this will all change after our first loss if not sooner). You might have heard about our sophomore QB who started most of last season's game before transferring to Rutgers and now is on his way to FSU (Federal Penitentiary University). If horrific news doesn't get reported in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Google Philip Nelson. I think most people would trade a good QB controversy over this truly sad situation.

Mitch Leidner is our only QB with any college experience. He is redshirt sophomore who had a few starts last year who was hit and miss. Like most teams, a lot will depend on his development from last year to this one. Perhaps our biggest question mark on offense is WR. A lot of young but lightly to totally untested receivers. We are hoping one or two of them really step up this year.

We are deep on the OL and RB which is good. However, our run heavy offense last season was probably more a result of our weak passing game. Bottom line, we need better balance.

I'll stop there for now and let others chime in.

Thanks for the advice, GoFrogs!! I just booked our flights, rental car and hotel. We are staying at the Hilton in downtown Fort Worth. Can't wait for football season and this road game! I spent 2 years living in Dallas shortly after I finished my undergrad, so it's always fun to return to the area to visit. Normally I stay in Dallas when I visit, so definitely looking forward to staying in Ft Worth this time! Cheers!

Flying Saucer is a beer haven. They have an incredible selection of beer, the atmosphere is just about perfect, the "beer goddesses" really know the beers they carry, are super friendly and great to look at. They also have a great bar, super knowledgeable bartenders, a huge outdoor beer garden and great food. They have daily fire sale selections of craft beer for $3, Sunday all Texas pints are $3, and Monday most pints are $3.

The restaurants mentioned are some of my favorites, but I'd add the following:

Downtown Sundance Square
Del Frisco's Grille - same quality steaks as Del Frisco's, but less expensive and better non-steak selection, excellent cocktails, right on plaza
Taverna - Excellent Italian, Wed night 1/2 price wine, superb weekend brunch with 1.50 Bellini and Mimosa, I'm Sicilian and this is my favorite place in Sundance Square
Mi Cocina or Cantina Laredo - good Tex Mex
Daddy Jack's - excellent seafood
Piranha Sushi - good sushi, excellent happy hour prices
Razoo's - good cajun/creole, look for fresh redfish and crawfish specials
H2 Burgers - amazing burgers inside Red Goose Saloon
Paciugo Gelato and Caffe - Excellent gelato and espresso drinks, try an affogato

West 7th Area
Terra Mediterranean Grill - superb Lebanese, week day lunch buffet includes almost entire menu, get there early to avoid rush
Blue Sushi - good sushi, excellent happy hour prices
Movie Tavern - movies, plus decent food, good family fun

Magnolia Area
Cane Rosso - Real Neapolitan pizza, try it, it's just like in Naples and really good
