Significant recruiting developments such as this deserve their own thread, IMO.

@SandyCohenIII: Officially committed to Marquette it has been my dream since I can remember!

Go Gophers!!

Seems like a good dude. Wish him the best, and I'll be following how he does.

I'm not very concerned about this choice for Sandy. From watching his videos (and that's all I've seen), he seems a bit slow to make decisions and push the ball up the court. I wish him all the best, but I believe there are far bigger fish out there for us in 2014.

Rah.

I agree with you. The only thing I really liked was his size. He picked a very good program and I certainly wish him well.

Im not pointing fingers here because I think everyone was right on their analysis of Cohen. And in advance, I don't think anyone has done this or will do this to an extreme, but the thing I would absolutely hate to happen throughout the recruiting process, is Gophers fans with the classic: "Awwh, I/we didn't want him anyway" or "He wasn't good enough to make an impact for us".
Now, not saying Sandy was a great player and I agree that its not like he will be some all-star player, but lets not continue to act like we don't need a top 100 recruit, because let's face it: they are hard to come by for us, and even if Sandy were a bench player, he'd be a better option than a lot of our other reserve options.
Moral of the story: If Kaleb Joseph, Newton, Whitehead, Rashad, Reid, Alex Robinson, Paul White, Perkins, etc choose to go elsewhere (I strongly believe a few will choose to be Gophers), lets not act like they weren't good enough for our team as fans, because each and everyone of these guys is worthy and capable of being a big time, impact recruit for us! That's all. ;)

GameDay point well taken. Generally I won't watch the videos unless I think we have a good shot, so I don't end up watching all that many. If you recall Allerik Freeman where we came in second, I though on tape he looked outstanding. I can't help it but I'm kind of using him as a prototype wing. The closer we get to NSD I'm sure I'll get more realistic. Pretty exciting times to be a Gopher fan.

I am not saying I don't want top 100 guys. My point was that compared to what else Pitino is going after, he would be pretty far down on the list. Of course you want to stack the cupboard with as many top recruits as possible. If he was the lone 4 or 5 star prospect we were after, I'd be far more disappointed with him committing to Marquette.

What makes me sad is the fact that Tyus doesn't say the same thing - dreaming of playing for the hometown team. I understand these are different level recruits and understand why Tyus is likely headed elsewhere, but still frustrating. I'm just hopeful Coach changes this, at least somewhat.

Hmmm.... Ryan James says that Sandy isn't set academicallyand he hasn't officially been released of his NLI

It's probably the herd mentality that ends up disappointing so many fan bases. Jerry Meyer, for example, often puts in a prediction that mirrors the prediction of one of the board operators or local insiders. At one point, Meyer had "crystal balled" AD Gueye, Anas, and Konate all to Minnesota which obviously was never going to happen. That's not to pick on Jerry, it's just how this crystal ball thing works. Once one school starts to get momentum, more guys make a pick based off just what one or two other guys have heard (or even just hunches of that 1 or 2 guys).

In this situation, I like that Evan Flood the Wisconsin Insider is projecting Cohen to Minnesota as well as the local Minnesota guys. I'd rather have the predictions going in our favor than not, but it does tend to artificially inflate hope (even if you know to be skeptical).

I did read on Twitter that Marquette won't allow anyone out of their LOI until they hire a coach. Assuming that is true, I wonder if that helps/hurts our chances with Cohen. I could make a case either way.

What I find most interesting is that Gravett changed his Marquette prediction from earlier today to Minnesota. Two predictions in one day seems to insinuate something going on.

The Gopher 247 guys have hinted they've heard positive news regarding Cohen and that Minnesota will definitely pursue him again.

of course we'll pursue him again if he's truly opening his recruitment. this staff is pursuing a ton of guys, as they did last year. that's a good thing and us pursuing him is not breaking news. we have three scholarships to fill. this staff wants and needs to turn over the roster.

Also, this thread was just dripping with optimism last summer. Hurts to read all the names we were in on that didn't fall our way. Oh well, hopefully Cohen will give us our coveted 4* after all :)

I will be refreshing this thread 78 times per day like everyone else, but I am going to temper any optimism based on the almighty Crystal Ball from the almighty 247Sports. The process to me seems a bit sketchy - at best.

Here, here. Let's get that monkey off our schneid.

I know I said that before and others provided links saying he was set. What I heard, no reliable sources, was AFTER those stories that were published durning his commitment timeframe. Heard he was not a bright kid at all.
