All Things RB Jeffrey Jones Thread

yeah it would be nice if this thread would only see activity when there is actual news as opposed to pointless speculation or random bumps just for the sake of moving it to the top of the list when there is no new info of any kind.

I don't understand what you mean. : )

Good luck to Jeff Jones on his test today. Pulling for you brother!

Rashaun Croney as well. He's taking it today too.

Jeez. We've got three recruits needing to take the last possible ACT to qualify?

I'm still optimistic he has/had it in him. He's probably finishing as I write this. At least we will know where we stand in a few weeks.

I heard from someone that JJ had a smile on his face leaving the test. He's in!!!

Man I hope he passes. I'm playing NCAA Football 14 today (mainly because they aren't making a new version for this season), but with the roster I downloaded, running the wildcat with Berkley Edwards handing off to Jeff Jones on a jet sweep is working like gangbusters.

You are correct. Any idle speculation about any past or future event including possible motivations or possible consequences of any actions by people related to such events is expressly forbidden. Unless you are a gopher coach, "insider", friends with said insider, or current player please do not comment on gopherhole except to report "news". Please be careful to not express an opinion about said news. Comments by former players no longer intimately involved in the program could be construed to be "opinion" and thus unwelcome by the gopherhole brain trust. We want facts, dammit.

This is no way directed towards certain gopherholers.

Does anyone know what he needs to score? Is it Math? or Language? Language, Science, or is there an essay?

Nice. Yeah I do stuff like that. I have Jeff Jones created too. Playing Gophers in dynasty mode.

Is that because of the Ed O'Bannon lawsuit?

Yup. They decided at the end of last season not to develop a game this year.

It isn't the end of the world, as you can download updated rosters, but playing 2014 schedules is not easy, with teams changing conferences. For what it is worth, I play a roster created by a Cane fan. The Jones' hype is not rooted in Gopher homerdom. The kid is legit and fans of neutral teams see that.

Marcus blog: Gophers football: Top recruit Jeff Jones took ACT again Saturday; still waiting to qualify

Jones improved his ACT score when he took the test in April, but it still wasn’t high enough.

If Jones can’t join the Gophers this season, then he’ll likely play at Iowa Western Community College. Limegrover wouldn’t address that possibility yet. But he did say that losing any one recruit — no matter how talented — should not be a reason for coach Jerry Kill’s recruiting class ranking to be considered a disappointment.

“Let’s see what happens as we go,” he said. “We don’t have to completely rely on the unknown. We’re never going to have a class where everybody jumps up and down and goes, ‘Oooh wee!’.”

– Pahokee (Fla.) High School cornerback Ra’Shaun Croney, who signed with the Gophers in late March, is also still waiting to see if he received a qualifying ACT score, according to his coach Blaze Thompson.

Go Gophers!!

I am starting to dislike the "we will never have" comments from the staff. It should be "at this stage."
Show some confidence. If they can string together a few successful seasons, there is no reason that getting some high ranked recruits should be a major coup.

per Shama:

Jones Works on Gaining U Admission

Jeff Jones is focusing on earning admission to the University of Minnesota by attending Minneapolis Public Schools summer classes, and recently took the ACT test for a fourth time hoping to improve his score.

A source told Sports Headliners Jones is working to raise his overall high school GPA and hopes that improvement along with a higher ACT score will allow him to gain admission to Minnesota and join the Gophers in time for August workouts and preparation for the 2014 season. Jones took the ACT test last Saturday and the results are expected later this month.

A combination of ACT result and GPA determines admission at Minnesota and other colleges. Jones signed a letter of intent last February to become a scholarship player for the Gophers but has known for awhile he faced academic challenges.

This is good good news. He is retaking courses that he did poorly on and if he can raise his GPA by 0.2 than his ACT score won't matter and vice versa. Correct me if i'm wrong but retaking courses that one did poorly on in the summer is much more beneficial to increasing ones GPA than just to take more classes in the last semester of ones high school career as it not only can boost you're GPA by just doing well but doesn't it replace you're grade that you got the previous time you took the course? If he got a D on a particular course say sophomore year and is retaking it then wouldn't he not only get a better grade but also replace the D with the better grade like he never got a D in the first place?

I believe they only look at the 16 core courses. So let's assume he retakes an F class and scores an A. That would give him more than the 0.2 bump. I'm pretty tired tonight so my mental math might be off so call me out. That might also be asking alot though, if he's not a great student. If he is retaking 4 courses and can raise each by one letter grade or more that should do it. Just depends.

Or, just pass the ACT.

To answer your original question, I'd be shocked if they don't allow for retaking of courses. They might put some sort of limit on it. Any Washburn teachers on gopherhole?

Starting in 2016 the NCAA will not allow the retaking of the 16 core courses. Timing is everything.

I don't know Mpls policy, but in most schools, you can only raise it to a C. If he's making up an F and not a D then it's doable otherwise an additional class or two makes more sense because there would be more available points.

I like the sound of that. Sounds more and more like he will get eligible. He has increased his score every time he has taken the ACT and now he is not only taking more courses to boost his GPA but the new grades will replace his old grades boosting it even further. Maybe with that second semester where he really worked his butt off he may have already increased it by .1 or .05 and now he would only need to increase it by another just another .1 or .15 or whatever instead of the full 0.2. Very nice to hear.

The lesson: don't be lazy and actually put forth a little effort so you don't have to repeat the work you gave a dogsh1t level of commitment to the first time.

Tommy Olson mentioned on KFAN this morning Jones has been at captains' practices this summer FWIW.

I look at it as a good sign Jones is already on the roster on gophersports.com. For comparison, Croney isn't on there yet.
