All Things P.J. Fleck Rumor Mill Thread - Listed as Candidate for Other Jobs

I'm not going to be too worried about it unless PJ actually left, which I don't think he will.

I just think if you're looking for the next Cignetti, Polasek could have as good of a chance as anyone.
I don’t think hiring an FCS coach is on its face bad

Tressel was an FCS coach that Ohio state hired

I'm sure Bo Pelini would pick up the phone lol
I wouldn’t consider him an FCs hire
But I’m sure he would

SDSU was an old guy for a while.

Would you rather have:
Chris Kleiman
Matt Entz
Or
Tim Polesek

I think I’d pick Entz

I would take Kleiman. Physical, power football.

It's not as big of a jump as it used to be. The last two NDSU coaches went to Kansas St and Fresno St. SDSU's coach is in his first year at Washington St.

Cignetti took James Madison from FCS for 2 years to FBS for 2 years, then went to Indiana.

As I’m sure Curt Cignetti was to all but the most hardcore IU fans (all 12 of them at the time) when he was hired in 2023.

That said, when hired at Indiana, Cignetti had 13 years of successful head coaching experience, including two years at the FBS level, assistant coaching experience on a P4 national powerhouse that won a national title, and stints at two ACC schools. And, Indiana fans were pretty fired up, actually.

While impressive, Polasek's resume is less. Doesn't mean he'd be a bad hire, but no one from the NDSU dynasty has jumped immediately as high as the Big Ten.

Yeah you’re right, he’s not getting players that aren’t here to play school
This is the stuff that bothers me, we have plenty of players that are here only due to football. And there’s nothing wrong with that. Quit pretending that because our results aren’t high end, that we don’t bend the academic rules in our favor.

Link?

That’s a pretty damning statement.

How is it damning?
Your implication is that we've recruited players who are good athletes but academically inept and that we've bent the rules to keep them on the field. There's zero evidence of that occurring over Fleck's tenure, quite the opposite actually.

Sure, but also don’t pretend we bend them anywhere near what a SEC school does.

We are still closer to Northwestern than we are to Ole Miss or Ohio St.

One of the more astute things I've ever read on GH. One component I would add: From the school's perspective, RTB doesn't really fly if they have their own established brand. PJ isn't getting the Penn State job, but can you imagine "We Are. Row the Boat."?! Of course not.

I think this means that if Fleck is going to be offered a job that the majority of observers would regard as "better" than Minnesota, it will mean the end of RTB. I have a hard time believing he'd do that, but perhaps it's become a Catch-22. He thinks RTB and using it as a way to create a life program is the best way to run a program, but the better jobs won't integrate RTB into their brand.
"Who's Rowing the Boat? We Are!"

Can you imagine PJ going to Arkansas and taking Drake with him ?
Drake would go with him, if Fleck went there. There is absolutely zero doubt.

The doubt is entirely on if he would go there or not.

I could imagine it, if they offered him $10M/year. And if they would offer Fleck that, then they'd offer any coach that.

The question for Fleck would be: what is the point? I don't think you can compete for a SEC title, let alone a national title, at Arkansas any easier than you can a Big Ten title and natty at Minnesota.

Maybe you could get a few more players there. But to what end?

I would guess he’d follow him to Arkansas, but would he follow him anywhere else?

If Fleck left my dream hire might be Matt Campbell. Probably never would pay for him though.

Maybe you were going for humor, but no way you hire a head coach to get a QB.

That said, if Fleck did go to Arkansas it would be a near certainty that Lindsey would go with him.
I was joking in my original post about Lindsey going to Arkansas and bringing Fleck with him, but it is the only way Fleck ends up at Arkansas.

Fleck's approach will not be received well in the SEC. He'd be a fool to try it.
