All Things P.J. Fleck Rumor Mill Thread - Listed as Candidate for Other Jobs

People are crazy if they think ND would ever hire a sleezeball like Meyer. That job will likely go to Fickell or Campbell.

Who is Kansas City offensive coordinator

it has to be him or it’s bad
Eric Sleeping with Bienemy as Chris Berman would say. I think his stock has dropped since KC is now a grind it out defense first team for some reason.

I thought our Gopher defense outshone them, head-to-head. Maybe Notre Dame should hire Rossi.
True, but Leonhard has done that year after year after year, and as compared to 'Bama or Ohio State or any of the other blue-blood elites, he's done it with largely 3 star (or lower) recruits. That, along with a healthy dose of walk-on players. In my opinion, he's the best defensive coordinator in college football, and there's nothing I'd like more than to see him leave Sconny.

I agree with this take too. I understand that all programs want to win, but I think Urban has way too much baggage for ND to ignore.

ESPN just said “this opens the most coveted job in all college sports”

what?

if Kelly was in the most coveted job in all college sports, why would he leave it to do the same job elsewhere?
He's taking that retirement money.

You are outside of your mind if you think Notre Dame wouldn’t take Urban.

If they were coming off the Weis era, sure. Notre Dame aren’t desperate and they have much safer geographical fits they could go after. I’m sure they’ll have interest from NFL guys too

Wait... the 'most coveted job in college sports' isn't in the SEC?

And this, according to ESPN?

The earth just shifted on its axis.

If they offer, he's taking it. And he'll leave us without ever winning the Big10 West..

In general, feel pretty good about where the football program is, but I honestly believe we are more than Fleck. We've gone two regimes where we've shown we are a class above the Nebraskas and Purdues and we are knocking on Wisconsin's door.

We can find someone else to carry us over the hump. Fleck hasn't yet. I hope he will next season for the Maroon and Gold.

I posted this on another thread, but it is illuminating, in my opinion.

Here's a direct comparison between Alvarez and Ferentz and Fleck, comparing each in their first five seasons. I think our guy stacks up pretty well, to date...

Barry Alvarez, first five seasons (conference record in parens):
1990 — 1-10 (0-8)
1991— 5-6 (2-6)
1992 — 5-6 (3-5)
1993 — 10-1-1 (6-1-1)
1994 — 8-3-1 (5-2-1)

Kirk Ferentz, first five seasons (conference record in parens):
1999 — 1-10 (0-8)
2000— 3-9 (3-5)
2001 — 7-5 (4-4)
2002 — 11-2 (8-0)
2003 — 10-3 (5-3)

P.J.Fleck, first five seasons (conference record in parens):
2017 — 5-7 (2-7)
2018— 7-6 (3-6)
2019 — 11-2 (7-2)
2020 — 3-4 (3-4)
2021 — 8-4 (6-3) (Bowl game pending)

Alvarez totals: 29-24 (16-22-1)

Ferentz totals: 32-29 (20-20)

Fleck totals: 34-23 (21-22)

-------------

Bottom line, Fleck has matched or even surpassed Alvarez and Ferentz in his first five years at the helm at Minnesota.

Plus Ferentz and Alvarez were both 44 when they started coaching at WI/IA. PJ just turned 41 today.
