All Things NFL Coaching Carousel

More rumblings on the HC/GM hiring carousel;

Despite a lot of noise that Ben Johnson is almost certain to be the Raiders next HC, Schefter says it's far from a done deal, other teams are still in play for Johnson.

Aaron Glenn, Lions DC, is apparently in play for NY Jets, NO Saints, and possibly the Raiders.

Eagles OC, Kellen Moore making the rounds, could be in play for the Cowboys since he obviously know the organization there and Jerruh knows him; not sure about that.

How many people are the Bears going to interview? Seems like two a day?
If it is what seems like 50 people...don't you at some point narrow it to 3 or 5 and do 2nd round interviews too?
Mike McCarthy is the name I see most often mentioned as the selection.

Thry said they want it to be extensive, leaving no stone unturned etc…

Interesting notes here...among them...Deion has a $10 million buyout and the AD has to give approval for any interviews.
Rumors
Ben Johnson new agent at the 11th hour.

That's in large part because the wonder duo of Warren and Poles are f'ng clueless in Chicago. I just don't see a lot of the bigger high profile candidates being interested in that job, including McCarthy.

I'll say one thing about doing a lot of interviews that generally goes unnoticed and doesn't get talked about; the interview panel, if they know what they are doing, can gather a shitload of information from the candidates about their own roster and their own team from interviewing a lot of candidates. Think about it, each candidate will have done a lot of homework on YOUR team, there's a lot to be learned there.

Package deal of Johnson for HC and Newmark for GM sure sounds good if you're a Raiders fan. Fingers crossed, although I'm not sold there's any guarantee that Johnson will be a great HC just yet. The Raiders need a reason to get excited and landing the biggest fish would do that, and Newmark sure seems to have a pedigree of building some good rosters

Yup, great way to glean competitive intelligence.

What a charade. We'll interview a bunch of people on zoom. Then we'll just panic and offer the
job to Ben Johnson. He's never been a head coach...we are an elite front office organization here to support him....what could go wrong?
I don't hire people at $17 and $20 an hour based on zoom interviews. You learn so much more in person.

The Daily Double for the Vikings fans would be to make the Lions a little worse and at least keep the Bears status quo. I don't think he can take them to a lower level.

Didn't he get to interview with Chicago in person during Detroit's Bye Week?!? I thought that was allowed.

I would agree it would be difficult to be more dysfunctional, but a good play caller on either side of the ball doesn't automatically make a great head coach. It could work, but it might not too. If I'm going to pay somebody $13 million a year to be the head coach I'd like him to have done it somewhere successfully.
The stories I read said they interviewed him one time on zoom....dunno?
I just think the Bears plan of attack to hire a head coach was very flawed. They interviewed Eddie George, hurry up in person on Sunday just to meet the Rooney requirements so they could hire Johnson today before he took another job. To me, thats a panic move.

I hope Aaron Glynn comes home the NY Jets and straightens out that mess and gets him out of the North as well😃

The 🐻 are clueless

I can't believe that Rex Ryan is only 62. I see him quite a bit on Get Up on ESPN, and I would've guessed 75. He is only 5 years older than Mike Greenberg, but looks like he could be Greeny's dad.
Good for you for watching that craptastic show

Guessing Flores is going to get a lot of token Rooney rule interviews just so the league can use it against him in his lawsuit. Really don't get why the Jets would go back to well with Rex, he sucked ass (and toes) the first go around unless nobody wants that job I guess. Ben Johnson to the Bears and Mike Vrabel to the Pats make perfect sense.

Well, I was dead wrong on Johnson not going to Chicago. It seems an odd mix, but I'm guessing Johnson thinks he can work with Williams, despite the fact that Williams isn't good at hardly anything that Jared Goff is good at, standing in the pocket and delivering the football on time for starters.

Raiders hire a GM, Jags dump theirs and Aaron Glenn will be the next HC of the Jets.

Now we'll get a chance to see what Meathead can do in DET without both of his competent Coordinators.

A seemingly competent move 🤞.

No idea if he’ll translate to a good HC or be another Salah, but I’m spared Rex’s shtick - the sequel😃

Can you imagine if they have a significant regression?

Too much talent for that when healthy, IMO...and they crush the Draft, too:

By losing a minority staff member who becomes the HC of another team, the Lions get rewarded with two (2) 3rd Round picks (2025 & 2026).

Pete Carroll to Vegas. Interesting. I think he's highly adaptable for an old guy, but doubt it matters unless they figure out QB.
Pretty good hire to sort of stabilize things/get them on the right track. Even if I'm not a fan of Pete, there's no denying his track record.

Were there rumors of this move or did this kind of come out of nowhere?

I had heard on multiple outlets that was the likely pivot for the Raiders after they lost out on the Ben Johnson Sweepstakes.

Abu information on what swat he has regarding personnel moves?

Darnold Time
Maybe I'm drawing a blank, but I can't recall the last time an NFL team solved long-term QB problems through free agency (other than the Saints with Drew Brees, but that was them taking a risk on a guy with an injury). All the other "hits" have been experienced QBs that were short-timers (Manning, Favre, Rich Gannon, Randall Cunningham, Kurt Warner, etc.)

It depends what you mean by "solved" and "short-term". Manning was the Broncos starter for four years, won the Division four times, made the Super Bowl twice and won one. I'd say he solved it. And he stayed nearly as long as a rookie 1st round pick would on his first contract. Same thing with Warner and Arizona.

This century, free agents have won the Super Bowl five times (Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady.) (Not counting Nick Foles.)
