All Things NFL Coaching Carousel

I was telling this to another Raiders fan just this morning. I have to wonder just what the Krafts look like after all the shit that’s gone down since Brady and Belichick left. None of it makes them look very good, especially the documentary on the dynasty that apparently made it look like Belichick had almost nothing to do with their winning. Stupid…

The Krafts have come out of the last 12-24 months looking petty and jealous and spiteful. Just not a good look.

Does Vrabel really want anything to do with that? When he can live in sunny, no state income tax southern Nevada?
About the only thing that tips the scale towards NE is having a young QB. Cousins would be a good bridge QB with Bowers and Meyers already there and if that happens, LV is a good choice.

The AFC West is shaping up to be pretty tough, though.

Vrabel took the Titans to the #1 seed with Ryan f'ng Tannehill. I think the "they have a QB" angle is a little overplayed. And it can't be more important than overcoming organizational dysfunction. The Bears, likely, have a QB; that doesn't make it a good job. The Falcons might think they have something with Penix; that doesn't make the ATL job a good one.

That would be the one knock though; the division. The AFC West is a meat grinder, especially with coaches.

As far as Vrabel; even though the Patriots are a huge betting favorite for Vrabel, if I'm betting my money, I would bet on Vrabel's ties to Brady/Seymour than anything Vrabel might feel towards the Krafts. I think the Krafts have damaged their reputation a lot in the last couple years.

Lastly, I agree with one discussion I heard earlier today: teams like the Patriots, Bears and Jags in particular, almost HAVE to go with an offensive-minded coach in order to salvage their QB situation.

The Raiders are hiring their 12th coach since 2002 -

Just Fire and Hire, Baby!

Raiders at least reached out to Belichick; no way he was leaving UNC but good on them for at least checking that out. They need a proven Head Coach who has been around the block, not some up-and-comer Coordinator

Ben Johnson has agreed to a 1st interview with the Raiders, and they've also requested interviews with Lions DC Aaron Glenn and Chiefs DC Spagnuolo. I gotta say NO to any of those really, although at least Spags has done the job before and has likely learned a shitload working under Reid.

Seeing Campbell interviewing with the Bears could show how the landscape of College Football is affecting coaches' future plans. Got to think there are a number of agents who are doing their work to see if NFL teams are interested in their client.

Nick Sorenson, first year DC for the 49ers, let go after one year; rumors are that Robert Saleh will be going back there for another stint.

Whoa. Raiders dropped the hammer on GM Tom Telesco.

This smells like something big is in the works. Vrabel, and a GM that is in line with what Vrabel wants to do? Finally something to be excited about for Raiders fans, it's been a while.

I'd be shocked if agreements are not already in place for both HC and GM; you don't make moves like this without knowing where you are going. They are going big game hunting, or so it feels

Not happening but this screams of a Belichek move. Should be interesting to see where they go with this

NE easily. They have a rookie QB that's better than any QB Vrabel had in Tennessee.
A rookie QB with a higher ceiling than any QB Vrabel had in Tennessee, perhaps.

"Ryan f'ing Tannehill," as Ogee called him, had the 6th-highest single season QB rating in league history in 2019. He followed that up with an "off year", only the 47th-highest all-time, in 2020, and then in 2021, despite being pretty mediocre statistically, led Tennessee to the 1 seed in the AFC.

Maye has the potential to be very good, maybe even HOF someday, and he will certainly be a draw for any potential head coaches, but to say he's better right now than peak Tannehill is delusional. Tannehill has had EIGHT seasons with a better QB rating than Maye put up this year.

Possibly, but unlikely. BB would look awfully bad dumping UNC at this point. But I would love it, especially if he brings Michael Lombardi with him to the desert. Lombardi has Raider ties

Now I'm hearing another angle of the "Raiders checked with BB" is that it was basically Brady just calling BB to pick his brain on the aspects of a coaching search, what's important, etc. Who knows at this point.

Free $$ for UNC in that case I guess.
I assume Belichek is committed to UNC but it's a strange sequence of events:

1. Fire HC Pierce
2. Retain GM Tedesco
3. Speak with Belichek
4. Fire GM Tedesco

In the hierarchy of business, it's always struck me as strange when a team hires a HC first and then hires his Boss (GM).

Edit: Didn't see Ogee's Brady involvement reference

Is Brady relinquishing his job on Fox after this year? Keeping it while having this much say with the Raiders stinks to high heaven. Plus he's not good on TV.

Good question about how detailed Brady's ownership involvement is with LV. I doubt he'd walk away from a 10/$100M announcing gig that only requires you to work 20 days a year.

I think the insight and knowledge of the game Brady brings to the broadcast is tremendous. His delivery style? Not so much.

There are a lot of people who have been losing their shit about this for the last 3-6 months. It does seem odd, no doubt, but at the end of the day Mark Davis has sole authority and decision-making rights.

I don’t think Bill cares about people’s perception of him; I think he cares about catching Don Shula’s all-time win record.

Him ditching UNC wouldn’t be unprecedented, as he did that in 2000, with the J E T S, when he bolted in Day 1 with this memorable resignation -

He’s likely not going anywhere, but if Bill bolted, it wouldn’t shock me.

It could be, hard to say. The way this went down, it just screams to me that they have something in place for a relatively big splashy hire(s), but maybe that's just my wishful thinking. The franchise is a shitshow right now, and it's bad for the league when certain teams are bad; Cowboys, Raiders, Packers (ugghh), etc

You can actually type again? Wow, I didn't know you had it in you anymore.

Yes, I meant potential, and none of that means Tannehill was a desirable or good QB. He was average at best. He only started 10 games in 2019, nice cherry pick there.

2021 was Vrabel's best coaching job, and a reason why I still can't believe they fired him. That team had no business being the 1 seed behind Tannehill's 21 TDs and 14 Int's. Which is why they lost their first playoff game.

Of course Maye's numbers don't look great for a rookie with no weapons around him. Imagine if he had Derrick Henry to hand the ball off to, AJ Brown to throw it to, and a competent coach like Vrabel.

Raiders will be interviewing Pete Carroll next week, per PTI. Legitimacy is within reach😃

Sounds like Deion wants to go to Vegas. I wonder who he'd want them to draft...

I was wrong. 100%. I didn't think Vrabel would want the gig.

I don't think you were "wrong"...your thought process was forward thinking and we don't even know if LV made him an offer.

My guess is his familiarity with the Patriots' organization, the continuous instability of the Raiders, having a young QB already in place and the AFC West as currently constructed all led to Vrabel's decision.

NE got themselves a very good coach that players will not only love to play for but will also understand who is in charge.

I would not be surprised if the Patriots not only acted quickly but could have even overpaid a little bit just to take Vrabel off the board before some other teams were able to act.

The Raiders firing Tom Telesco at GM two days after firing Pierce also majorly slowed down their time frame on hiring a Head Coach. I don't think the Raiders will have GM/HC in place until pretty late January now.

Mike McCarthy out in DAL.

He wasn't under contract so maybe he has an agreement in place somewhere else, who knows. He's more of a known commodity than just about any of the other options out there right now.

Nobody has done less with more IMO but getting away from Jerry Jones has to be reinvigorating for the guy's career.
