There is certainly not tough anything when BADGER lies consistently.

BADGER never, ever makes excuses!!!!!

Gopher fans should be calling out BADGER.
 





Just as I stated yesterday, they came in with an offer he couldn't refuse. And you can't blame any kid that selects a blueblood like UNC.
 



the new era of college sports could see kids come home to play without sitting. Coyle and the new coach know this.
 



I'm as disappointed as anyone but I think this process has shown that Walton is probably very conflicted and it would not surprise me if he ended up transferring out of there after a year or two. I would also not have been surprised if the reverse had happened and he transferred out of here had he chosen us.

You know what surprises me is that they year after we went to the Final Four we had just a wretched recruiting class where, I think, Kevin Nathaniel was the top recruit. Even before sanctions, the Final Four did not do anything to help us recruit better.

Who were the top guys coming out of Minnesota at that time?
 


No one thinks Pitino has to land every Minnesota kid but obviously his track record isn’t good with the highly rated instate recruits.

Whatever the reason the vast majority of highly rated instate recruits continue to go elsewhere ultimately may be beyond Pitino’s control but the optics of it are not good for his program.
 

So anyone have a list of players that the Gophers had a legit shot at but missed out on while waiting for KW to decide?

I like your thinking. Let’s see how he fairs with other big time talent and how many minutes he gets per game.
 

Sorry, but I am not gracious enough to congratulate or cheer for a HS player that chooses to play college basketball at some school I don’t follow. Especially a team that repeatedly cheats. It doesn’t matter that he went to HS in Minnesota. To me it is like congratulating a kid that played HS in Nebraska that is going to play in Idaho. I suspect that he will be collecting quite a few more slivers than he expects. The part that upsets me is that he may have caused Minnesota to lose out on a good player while they entertained him.

Agreed. Any kid that goes to UNC or Kansas or Arizona or Duke is presumptively a cheater, and not somebody I would root for. Now, granted, would I maybe do the same thing? Who knows. Money is a powerful draw, as is the possibility of not having to worry about going to class, etc. And of course, the other benefits of playing at a cheater school, success, etc. But I don't have to like it, or cheer for that kid.
 


Was D1 MN a factor? I remember when Jeter left there was a local push for Al Harris, who was Kerwin’s AAU Coach last summer. Is he/was he a legit candidate and if so I assume this solidified that he is no longer a candidate.

If you think athletes at the U have to take really tough classes... My intro to sport mgmt class which had probably more than half athletes was the easiest in-person class I took at the U by a mile.

My buddy was getting recruited by Harvard for hockey and told me the ACT score he needed to get in. Let's just say it's a different world for athletes.

True, but we really don't know that. Lots of talk about "taking" Kier yesterday, but none of us really knows if we would have gotten a commitment out of him or not. We're just speculating. The one thing I am on board with Built is the "first come, first serve scholarship" strategy, so we're not futzing around with this kind of thing. We lost out on a good player, but not likely an immediate program changer, and by all accounts spent an awful lot of time on it.

I want to know what the D-1 management had to do with his decision. Another feather in their cap getting someone into that bastion of academic prowess UNC.

We're not far off from the day when a typical recruiting class will consist of equal parts high school athletes and transfer players. Coaches are embracing that concept and leaving scholarships open for the spring, and also taking into account likely transfer losses themselves.

Our recruiting class this year consists of:

1. Jamal Mashburn
2. Martice Mitchell
3. Brandon Johnson
4. Liam Robbins
5. Unnamed transfer (Peterson?)

I think that's a very good recruiting class.

Too harsh. Not everyone who goes to a cheater school cheats. I'm going to assume Kerwin went to UNC because of the name and the opportunity. If he is not inclined toward class, he may benefit from the fraudulent classes available to all UNC students. I highly doubt this came down to a bidding war between corrupt programs. If our staff had any sense that was an issue with Waltons, they would have bugged out a long time ago.

Eligibility issues need to be clarified first, though. I don't like the no sit transfer rule because it makes lower level programs farm systems for the rich, but if they change the rules you live with them. The question about eligibility leaves a lot of ambiguity to make it a recruiting strategy right now.
