All Things Ja'Quan Newton and Isaiah Whitehead Thread

Since the Gophers don't appear to be guaranteed an official visit from either Whitehead or Newton, it seems that we may be behind other schools for both players. Not that we are out of the race by any means, but it would be nice to see some other commitments to these other schools to help increase Minnesota's chances. Both Whitehead and Newton are on record as saying they will likely commit in the Fall. Here's some names to keep an eye on that have offers that could help us out if they commit before Whitehead and Newton make their decisions (other current Gopher targets are bolded):

SG Competition for Whitehead:
Syracuse - None
UCLA - Stanley Johnson, Rashad Vaughn (Spring Decision), Namon Wright, Trey Kell
Arizona - Stanley Johnson, Rashad Vaughn (Spring Decision), Namon Wright, Dorian Pickens, Trey Kell, Justise Winslow (5* SF)
St. John's - Khadeen Carrington
Miami - Ahmed Hill, Jared Terrell, James Demery, J.P. Macura, Richard Lee, Troy Holston, Kahari Beaufort

PG Competition for Newton:
Miami - Lance Tejada, Keith Pinckney
UCLA - Josh Perkins (Commits 8/25), Jordan McLaughlin, Dominic MaGee
Oregon - Casey Benson (3* PG already committed to Oregon)
Syracuse - Kaleb Joseph
Texas A&M - JaQuel Richmond, Alex Robinson, Dominic MaGee, Lance Tejada

This is starting to feel like the Shaka Smart thread. Lots of raw enthusiasm, then some tempered doubt.... Hoping for a different result.

We didn't get Shaka, but that situation didn't turn out half bad. ;)

The hypothetical scenario below is what I am hoping for. One can dream right?

1. Kaleb Joseph soon commits to Syracuse as expected (eliminating Syracuse for Newton and dropping them down a notch for Whitehead due their potential "package" possibility)
2. Josh Perkins commits to UCLA on August 25 (Gopher fans see it as a negative at the time, but again eliminating them for Newton and lowering them on Whitehead's list)
3. Arizona gets a commitment from one of their 5* Wing recruits Stanley Johnson or Justise Winslow (Arizona is very high on both of their lists, eliminating Arizona for Whitehead since they already got a big time scorer)
4. Whitehead and Newton then decide to take their talents to Dinkytown instead of South Beach :)

Basically half of the schools that Stanley Johnson could commit to would help our recruitment of others, so hoping he makes a decision soon. I also think Miami might not be in play for Newton or Whitehead because of some guard who's already committed named Adonys Henriquez. We've gotta end up with a few in the end, right?!

Best name and icon by far. Welcome. Quite the splash.

GopherHole.com (@GopherHole) 8/6/13, 12:02 PM We agree! Getting playing time from Rich Pitino won't be a problem at!! #Gophers RT @J_Newton20: I Got 99 Problems and getting Rich ain't 1

JaQuan Newton is bound for Miami, sources say.

Rough.

I'm beginning to worry that we wont get anybody = just close...

These guys are too highly rated not to be heavily recruited. Pitino is recruiting to the same school that Clem, Monson, and Tubby did. Nothing came easy for them and they all tried their best. Rich has the same competition for recruits and the same facilities. He does inherit a strong upcoming group of high school local talent and there in lies is best chance for talent upgrade.

Just because we make top 5 or six is not a logical reason to "love are chances" Getting a 4* out of state kid is tough for this program at this time.

Guess this means we can book whitehead to south beach?

I don't get the sense that Whitehead is as high on Miami as Newton was. With that being said, I think it does very much hurt the Gophers chances of landing Whitehead with Newton now out of the picture for the Gophers. I'd guess Whitehead will probably end up at Syracuse to team up with his other buddy Chris McCullough.

You mean all of these players we were locks to sign are choosing to go elsewhere? No, couldn't be happening with Pitino the super-recruiter...

Did anyone say they were locks? Find the posts please. For someone who preaches posting facts this was awfully hypocritical of you.

OR be optimistic: Hey only a few guys have committed, nobody was ever a lock, but we are still on the top lists of many highly rated recruits! A combination of 4 of any of the recruits we have offered would be a very good class

+1

Of course he will find a way to tell you that you're "wrong" though.

No one said Newton or Whitehead was a lock, but plenty of posters said we were "guaranteed" to sign "multiple 4- and 5-star players" on the basis of nothing more than "we offered a lot of them". I was laughed off and attacked when I called that out for the ridiculous and terrible logic that it is. We will see who's laughing on signing day. I hope Pitino is doing what I suggested he should do from the start and has plenty of contingency plans for all of the 4- and 5-stars that we're not going to sign.

Dude you're really cool. And so smart. Have you thought about coaching?

On a more serious note, do you understand why people don't like you on this forum? Here's a hint: you are not smart and do not have any more insight into recruiting that any other person on this board has.

Unfortunately some in Gopherhole felt that after removing Tubby and replacing him with Pitino Jr. 4 star recruits would just all of a sudden want to come here. I agree with DPO...all we are doing is offering a lot of players we don't have a chance at. Signing day will be 2 and 3 star players...and not MN best 3.

Haha.

The problem with trolls like dpo is that they draw others into silly arguements, derail threads, and end up getting quoted by the people that they catch. Makes it hard for the ignore filter to do its job.

I would agree with you as far as 2014 recruits go, pretty tough for a young inexperienced coach to land the big guys, he's getting in the door though, he is a dedicated/persisitant recruiter, give him a year or two, a little success on the court, and the story could be completely different

One of the many players we have been recruiting has signed.....now all of the sudden eveyone is convinced we won't get any of these guys? We should re-name this the chicken little basketball forum.

It's not Chicken Little for me, because I've stated that all along. Though I would amend your statement from "won't get any" to "maybe get one". Signing multiple out of state high 4- and 5-stars is a pipe dream anytime in the near future. I've been very consistent in stating that, and warned from the beginning against ridiculous expectations. Now that people are starting to see what I've been talking about (and I'm not the only one who's been saying it), it's funny that I'm a "troll" and "not smart" and "lack insight" even though I've been very consistent all along. The even funnier thing is that I've been here much longer than any of these no-name name-callers, and will continue to be here long after. I guess it's true what they say about not wrestling with pigs. You get dirty, and the pig enjoys it.

Maybe you could, you know, hope for the best for the program instead of hoping for a poor recruiting class just so you can be smug on GopherHole.

Maybe you could, you know, not make things up instead of putting words into my mouth. There's an enormous difference between hoping for something to happen and predicting something will happen - not that I'd expect you to understand the nuance.

CAN EVERYONE PUT dpodoll68 ON THEIR IGNORE LIST SO WE DON'T DERAIL EVERY THREAD HE TROLLS?

Thanks.
