Wouldn’t it be simpler to list who hasn’t blessed or honored him with an offer:confused:

STrib: Jalen Suggs, Dain Dainja and Class of 2020 stars could be first in years to consider NBA leap

Taking a break from a workout on a recent afternoon in St. Paul, Jalen Suggs and Dain Dainja had a hard time keeping straight faces. One would compliment the other, then vice versa, and then again. In this first season together as AAU teammates, the young metro-area basketball stars were having fun talking about causing trouble for opposing Under Armour Circuit teams.

Like most high-level prospects after their sophomore year in high school, they are getting their first true taste of big-time recruiting. The scholarship offers are flowing in and their phones are buzzing with calls and texts from college coaches.

Suggs, Dainja and their fellow Class of 2020 standouts, having observed this relentless process in years past, are more ready for this craziness than you might expect. One thing they aren’t prepared for, however, is a potential looming decision: take one of these scholarships, or go straight to the NBA? This 2020 class, if the push for rule change succeeds, likely will contain the first top prospects to ponder that question in over a decade.

Rewriting the NBA’s age-limit rule that essentially requires players to play one season of college basketball was among the top recommendations in April from the Commission on College Basketball, headed by former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. The proposal to end the “one-and-done” era was a conversation starter on many levels, and some high school sophomores already are talking about a possible decision to declare for the NBA draft after graduation.

“I’ve most definitely thought about it a lot,” said Suggs, the 6-5 Minnehaha Academy point guard and five-star prospect. “I’ve talked to my dad about it. We’ve had a couple conversations. The biggest thing for me is not being complacent. Staying in the gym and continuing to work on my craft. And whichever opportunity presents itself, just take the best one that’s on the table.”

So why do these teams keep offering players like Suggs this late when they have absolutely no chance of getting him?

per Shooter:

Former interim Timberwolves head coach Sam Mitchell has taken a job as associate head coach at the University of Memphis. He’ll be recruiting Minnesota for new coach Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway.

The former NBA coach of the year with the Toronto Raptors plans to eventually become a college head coach. In Minnesota, Mitchell is focusing on Hopkins’ power forward Zeke Nnaji.

Jalen Suggs, the 6-foot-4 point guard at Minnehaha Academy who is a top-10 recruit in the 2020 class, is playing for the U.S. national basketball team in Argentina and also being recruiting by Mitchell.

That was North Carolina coach Roy Williams, and representatives from Clemson, Marquette, Xavier, UCLA, Duke, California, Virginia, Texas, Boston College, Memphis, Kansas, Gonzaga, Notre Dame and Boston College on Saturday in Atlanta at the Under Armour Challenge watching Minnehaha junior point guard Jalen Suggs from Minnehaha Academy and Dain Dainja from Park Center.

Clemson last week offered a tender to Dainja, a 6-foot-8, 220-pound junior power forward. The 6-4 Suggs has assorted offers, including the Gophers.

I have always wondered this...sometimes you get mid-majors offering a top 50 guy when he is getting looks from the blue bloods.

My best guess is that it gets them some exposure and makes it look like they are competing for the top guys, which puts them in a better light with other recruits.

My second guess (especially for football, where recruiting is more scattershot IMO) is for guys that fall in the rankings and have offers dry up. Maybe you end up with a guy that was thought to be a P5 player but ended up in the MAC.

I'm sure those schools know it is a long shot. There's always a chance that the relationship with the recruit ends up paying off. Maybe he gets hurt and the top programs back off, or maybe he goes to a blue blood school and things go poorly so he ends up transferring. They probably just want to set themselves up as a backup option in case something unexpected happens. Also doesn't hurt your reputation if your program shows up on the list of schools that are in on a top recruit, even if that list is really long.

I'm hoping as Pitino spends more time building relationships with the local AAU scene, he can form relationships and build trust with smart coaches who are able to identify talents like Suggs and Hurt as 7th and 8th graders so we can be the first school by a mile to build relationships with the kids and offer them.

This is ridiculous:

STrib: Blue-blood offers coming? Only a matter of time for Jalen Suggs

Fresh off winning his second gold medal with Team USA in Argentina, five-star 2020 point guard Jalen Suggs was one of the most heavily watched prospects as the July live recruiting period started last week.

It’s no secret Suggs is on the lookout for blue-blood coaches in attendance.

Kansas' Bill Self, North Carolina's Roy Williams, Kentucky's John Calipari and Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and their assistants were among the coaches to see Suggs play in the Under Armour Association Challenge in Atlanta.

The Minnehaha Academy junior said he’s planning to take unofficial visits to Duke, North Carolina and Kansas this fall.

“I haven’t gotten offers from them, but I talk to all those coaches and assistants,” Suggs told the Star Tribune. “Talking and gaining knowledge from them is great. It helps me in becoming a smarter player and building relationships – that has been my main focus right now. I believe the offers will come if I keep performing. I just have to stay in the gym and keep getting better and do what I do.”

In the meantime, Suggs said Minnesota, Iowa and Ohio State are recruiting him the hardest in both basketball and football. And he appreciates how much Pitino is making him a priority. The Gophers fifth-year coach and either assistants Jeter or Ed Conroy have contacted Suggs weekly since coaches were allowed to call Class of 2020 targets on June 15.

The Gophers are months away from opening the 2018-19 season, but Suggs anticipates a significant improvement after a 15-17 record last season.

“I definitely think they have the talent to do it,” Suggs said. “Pitino is a good coach. They have good facilities. I honestly think it could be a good year for the Gophers. I’m excited to get to some games and see how it goes. This is an important year for them.”

per Bossi:

Jalen Suggs

Whose gotta have him? Minnesota

Why? Minnesota hasn't had the best success in keeping true blue chip hoops prospects home and there hasn't been another homegrown player that Richard Pitino hasn't had more time to show love to. He can play the one or the two, he's tough as nails and Gophers fans would go wild if he stayed home. At the very least, they can't let him leave for another Big Ten program.

The competition: Baylor, Iowa State, Pittsburgh, Xavier, Marquette, Georgia Tech, UCLA, UNLV, Wake Forest and more.

Suggs with a tough finish after beating Carton off the bounce but goes down in a heap grabbing right knee

Hope the kid is OK. Not sure if he returned to the game or not but from what I’m reading it doesn’t sound like it

STrib: Two-sport star Jalen Suggs avoids serious knee injury, out five weeks

Five-star Minnehaha Academy point guard Jalen Suggs suffered a right knee injury in an AAU game last week, but it turns out he won’t be out for long.

Suggs, who is also a high-profile quarterback prospect, had a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) done Tuesday that revealed a bone bruise, so he’s sidelined for five weeks, according to his father, Larry Suggs.

"I think he'll be fine," Larry Suggs said. "He's a tough kid, so I think he'll recover quick."

Suggs is likely to miss Minnehaha Academy’s football opener Aug. 31, but he's expecting to be back on the field for the remainder of the season.

There has been every indication this summer that he's taking the possibility of playing two sports in college seriously.

"I’m just treating them equally right now and getting ready to talk to football coaches in a bit," Suggs said. "Once that comes it will start to get a little bit hectic with basketball and football coaches all on the phone. But I actually really have fun with the process. I take every conversation to learn and build relationships. Having fun with both sports right now and we’ll see in the future."

Oh boy, here comes the soap opera where he makes it sound like there is a chance when in reality the Gophers have no shot.

I hope he commits to the Gophers just to prove you wrong.

I want it to happen, don't get me wrong.

But the reality is that virtually all of the truly elite talent that comes from this state will keep going to the blue bloods until the Gophers have some semblance of stability and consistent year to year success.

It won’t happen until these big time players stay home and build a tradition for other players to see and then experience! Go Gophers!
