All Things Immaculate Grid-related (MLB, NBA, NFL)

Buttercup Dickerson.

Found him from your Nolan link as another of the 10 players to be blacklisted by the National League in 1881. His story reads like a Hollywood script waiting to happen, but not a much different tale than The Princess Bride.

Seems he could be useful as a Red for the Grid. Noteworthy, led the League in Triples once with 14 as a 20 year old Outfielder.

Nickname was not from consuming Reese's as I would have guessed.

I finally got to work in Buttercup Dickerson. Also getting brought in was another unique nickname, Chicken Wolf.

I had been saving Chicken when I stumbled upon him on a SB category a few weeks ago and noticed he pitched too. He got rocked all 3 times.

Along with The Only Nolan, the nickname trio helped achieve a Total Rarity of 1.

Love the work you're doing on the old-timers with the wonderful nicknames; I hope I can file these away in my memory.

Yesterday I also had a 1% day too, my angle was with former Twins managers-was able to put Frank Quilici and Johnny Goryl to use in the 3B & 2B/SS category. As it turns out, damn near every Twins manager since they moved to MN could have been used across those particular categories yesterday:
Cookie Lavagetto, Billy Martin, Bill Rigney, Quilici, Gene Mauch, Goryl, Billy Gardner, Gardy, and Molly

The exceptions:
Sam Mele (1B and OF)
Cal Ermer (cup of coffee at 2B)
Ray Miller (no MLB experience)
TK (1B and OF)
Rocco (OF, although he did play in one game at 3B late in his career)
Derek Shelton (no MLB experience)

Pssst, hint... Chicken can be used today.

I have made mental note of Goryl, pretty sure I have not used him yet.

Too late on Chicken Wolf for today; the question is, have you closed off the Chicken’s? I see Chicken Hawks is an option, and then there’s also Negro League HOF’er Turkey Stearnes. Also the geese (rather the Goose, Goslin and Tatum). A fair number of Ducky’s, but no Duck.

The next time the Negro Leagues category, just remember Turkey and Goose.

I have used Turkey Stearns & Goose Goslin, but the others are in play.

I do have Chicken Hawks on my radar. Interesting both Chickens would both lose in a battle with their surnames. Badly.

Twins Alert on the Grid.

Paul Hartzell is noteworthy for being in the Rod Carew trade. Interesting that he had a 3 season gap in MLB before wrapping up as a Brewer in 1984.

Dave Edwards is a New Player for me, but should have been more front of mind given how many of his 1979 Topps Cards I accumulated.

Jeff Cirillo also is a Newbie. Noticed him as a Rockies All Star.

Willie Montañez is a Grid Rarity Warrior.

Ken Brett has opened a wide Gap in my Most Player Used category (+5).

Nice move on Hartzell-I dug a little recently and saw him as the unfamiliar name of the bunch, but neglected to recall that he finished with the Brewers. I tried to make a mental stamp that he and Brad Havens both spent time with the Orioles following their Twins' stint (and made myself chuckle to think the Carew trade could be framed as trading for two future All-Stars in Engle and Landreaux).

I went with Danny Walton for the Brewers square (he was regrettably the backstop exchanged for Rick Dempsey, from the Yankees) and flamestarter Emilio Pagan for the Friars, both newbies on my grid. Brian Raabe completed the line, although I'd used him some time ago for that exact same match. I too had Hisle in the same square as you, and slotted Denny Neagle into the Rockies/Yankees square.

Speaking of Rockies/Twins, a few days ago I came across Curtis Leskanic's name and my memory was jogged that he was a farmhand acquired by the Twins for Paul Sorrento. I either didn't realize or had forgotten that he had been chosen by the Rockies in the expansion draft and then went on to a long career with the Rockies, Brewers, Royals, and Red Sox (and once out of Colorado, sub 3.00 ERA's with Brewers & Royals). But the reason I bring him up-he was cousins with Katrina Leskanich, otherwise known as the lead singer of Katrina and the Waves, the muse of Jack Black in High Fidelity. Walking on Sunshine, indeed. (courtesy of his SABR report-always fascinating reads)
