All Things Immaculate Grid-related (MLB, NBA, NFL)

113 RBI that season too with just 9 HR.
That 1996 Season I was in LA so I followed from afar, but went to Anaheim to see them 3 times. The Twins wound up 78-84 and were still in the Wild Card hunt around Labor Day.

Bummer that Puckett was not around. If his stats had carried over from the previous season, they would have been tough.

Yeah with Knoblach and Cordova (and even guys like Becker and Stahoviak), that would have been a pretty good lineup if Puckett was still there.

The pitching on the other hand...

As I mentioned I was in LA, so not following them day-to-day. Looking at Baseball Reference it was eye opening how dreadful the pitching was.

Radke was decent, no other starters were below a 5.00 ERA. Bullpen, not much better outside of Mike Trombley & Dan Naulty.

Uff da.

17 guys that threw 20+ innings and only 3 had an ERA under 5.00. This was in the middle of the steroid era but still.

Detroit's pitching was even worse, team ERA of 6.38! https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/DET/1996.shtml

Looking at the Twins staff, Scott Aldred can come in handy for the Rockies & Rays in terms of Grid purposes.
He could be the ace on the Quinton McCracken All-Stars (he played for Rockies, D-Backs, and Rays, in addition to 24 games for the local team in ‘01)

Funny you bring up the ‘96 Twins-I used Frankie Rodriguez (BoSox .2%) and Scott Klingenbeck (Orioles, .008%) today. For my money, Klingenbeck was the worst pitcher I ever saw on the mound for the Twins so he’s forever etched in my memory. I finished off the category with Tony O at 7%. It seems a bit astounding that only 5 Twins have hit the 200 hit mark in the 60+ years the franchise has been in MN. (Knoblauch had 197 in ‘96 and Bostock 199 in ‘77)

I would have guessed Quinton McCracken was a Charlestown Chief.

Not much to say, except Ope's nugget from months ago that Mark Salas hit exactly .300 one season paid off for me today, as I used him for the played catcher/.300 average square to the sweet tune of .004%

I used Brian Harper, a solid 0.4%.

Butch Wynegar was 0.6% for Angels/Catcher.

One function that I'd love to see IG add is the percentages not just for the top guy (Piazza, for the category we're talking about), but a drop down to see #2, #3, #4. . .#167. I'm often times curious about that.

Scott Aldred (0.1%) already paying dividends, in the Phillies/Rockies cube today.

Also sneaky low, Gaetti (0.2%) in the Silver Slugger/300 HR Club. Pat Neshak (0.6%) solid in the Phillies/A's square.

Still not a real Overall Rarity having to use Larry Walker (17%) in the Silver Slugger/Rockies category.

Valenzuela garnered 5% in the Silver Slugger/Dodgers slot.

I also used Juan Samuel (2%) for Phillies/Dodgers. I didn't recall that he played for LA. However, having watched Fernando's No Hitter clip, Samuel fielded the grounder up the middle on 2nd base and started the game ending double play.

Hey, I put Aldred to use just as you did Ope!

Torii Hunter was my SS/300 cube, to the same tune of .2% as Gaetti.

The other Twin connection I was able to employ was Nick Punto for a cool .2% (Dodgers/Phils)

And one other adjacent Twins history--Dave Kingman for the Athletics 300+ HR's (the batter with the ball that went up and never came down in the Metrodome) for 2%.

Gaetti's Silver Slugger is pretty amazing in my opinion, because it wasn't during his Twins tenure and it was after he was released by the Angels due to lack of productivity.

He did it at age 36, with the Royals.

Twins Alert on the Grid today. Coolhand special with the Rangers on their too, though the Rays take some of the fun out of it.

My Tampa/Texas square had a Twins tie to it as well

I could only think of Jose Canseco for Rays/Rangers.
That's a good one. Mine was a highly regarded Twins pitching prospect who was traded for a then top hitting prospect in a deal that didn't age very well for our team.

Nice. Didn't realize Garza had a short stint with the Rangers.

For whatever reason looking back at his career the team I always forget about is the Brewers, even though his tenure there was much longer. Funny how our memory can work (or too often in my case, not work).

My phone won’t allow me to post a screenshot, but I was able to go all Twins on the board today:
Top Row: Nelson Cruz, Robbie Grossman, Junior Ortiz
Middle Row: Ben Rortvedt, Glenn Borgmann, John Roseboro
Bottom Row: Grant Balfour, Jesse Crain, Henry Blanco

The most difficult cube was Ortiz—had to sit on that one for a long time until faintly recalling that Texas was where he capped his career.

We had 3 of the same names, Ortiz, Borgmann & Crain though I used Junior in the Foreign Born catcher. I went with Darrell Porter in the Rangers/Catcher category. Surprised he was only 0.6%.

I used Ortiz, Bartlett, Fred Manrique, and Mark Salas.

For the Vikings today, I had Morten Andersen, Donald Igwebuike, and Tyler Conklin.
Donald Igwebuike, nice! I had forgotten about him and having my memory jogged for Iggy was very pleasant.

I went Linval Joseph, Jeff Christy, and Todd Scott

I went back this morning to do yesterday's football Grid. For Vikings I went:

Giants - Bob Tucker / 0.9%
Bucs - Jeff Christy / 0.7% (Randall McDaniel got 0.04% in the 1st Rd cube)
Jets - Ed Marinaro / 0.5%

Still my overall Rarity score took a big hit, using Plaxico Buress (74%) and Antonio Brown (67%) for the Steelers. Neil O'Donnell (6%) was the other Steeler I used, to go along with Phil Simms (1%) and Joe Namath (3%) in the 1st Rounders.

154 Rarity Total.

My Baseball Rarity score was 10 when I plugged it in this morning. It's dropped to a single digit, 9, in the afternoon. Victory is Mine!

ALPHABETICALLY:

John Candeleria
Bob Grich
Dave Goltz
Doug Mientkiewicz
Bill Lee
Kirby Puckett
Bill Russell
George H Ruth
Chris Speier

Mariners - Frankie Rogriguez (0.08%)
Brewers - Ken Brett (0.3%)
<3.00 ERA Season - Justin Topa (0.04%)

Twins in the category spurred me onto a sub 10% grid score today (with a hefty memory bank of ‘80s baseball cards overall):
Mariners: Terry Bulling, obscure backup catcher (.1%)
Brewers: UW-Lacrosse alum Caleb Boushley (.09%)
Under 3.00 ERA: Vic Albury (.04%)

Both Bulling and Albury featured grand mustaches from the late ‘70s/early ‘80s, hence their lodging in my memory bank.

Nice utilization of Ken Brett once again 👍

Thanks, nice pull on Bulling. I couldn't quite keep it under 10% today. Carlos Gomez (6%) in Brewers/Cubs wasn't as rare as I thought it would be, and Doc Gooden (4%) in the <3.00/ ERA had me in double digits by themselves.

Did you make it through October unscathed? I had 2 Errors, messed up thinking Cal Ripken was a 1st Rd Draft pick & Rookie of the Year, plus confused Garry Maddox with Gary Mathews on a Cubs/Phillies category.

Cal was taken in the 2nd Rd. While both Maddox & Mathews played for Philly, only Sarge also played for the Cubbies.

Sort of Aaron Judge type dropped routine flyball type errors.

Oh well, on to November. 29 more to go.

October was pretty rough for me--I was knocked out of perfection on October 5--a Saturday no less!--when I made the mistake of thinking Tony O. had 2000 hits +.300 average. Oliva finished his career with 1917 hits, alas.

I also was struck hard by the expansion era teams during the month--while I was knocked out early, I wasn't getting through the month unscathed.

But hey, November's a new month and I'm 2 for 2 so far.

Interestingly about Maddox and Mathews, they both came up with the Giants at the same time and along with Bobby Bonds could have been a really formidable outfield for a decade but all three were gone by 1976.
