All Things Gophers Basketball Class of 2022 Recruiting Thread

He was a top 100 recruit and had done impressive flashes - I think he’ll be a monster by the time he’s done.
Regarding Henley he’s the 20th ranked player in Cali now - I’ll take that any time.

we shouldn’t be scared of younger guys contributing - most of the should be able to (meaning we’re recruiting the right talent)especially the guards/wings.

TT is still growing into his body at this point and post bolsters usually take longer to develop, unless they are in the top tier.
Just started at 2014. May go deeper later but seemed logical to get a handful of guys who have basically finished their careers. I’m tired though.
2014-Joe Furstinger. Played 4 years at New Mexico. Ended up starting most of his senior year averaging 10 and 7. Plays professionally in Europe (maybe?)
2015-New Williams. Committed to Auburn. Ended at Fresno St where he started 43 games over 3 seasons.
2016-Justin Moore. Committed to Georgia Tech. After starting 18 games as a freshman started 0 as a sophomore. Transferred to Pacific. Played a lot as a junior. Averaged 5.7 points as a senior reserve.
2017-Vante Hendrix. Played 4 games for Utah as a freshman. Transferred to New Mexico and played 18 games. Ended at Cal State Northridge. Played 8 games. Never played a 4th season.
2018-Joel Mensah. Has averaged 6mpg over 3 season at San Diego St and then James Madison. Appears his career is over.
2019-Amani Harris. Looks like he is at a community college. Website won’t open on my phone.
2020-Frank Anselem. Averaging 2 points and 3.5 rebounds per game for Syracuse. Has started 6 games in his second year.
2021-Harold Yu. We remember him from Sierra Canyon. At 7’3 he appears to not be playing anywhere. After a deeper dive Yu appears to be stuck in China due to Covid, per an article from Fall 2021.

I need a clarification, as I do not understand how the aforementioned players in your post relate to my post. Txs

Henley does look great on the video highlights, and he could be the biggest surprise of all the new recruits, but I agree there's no way to tell until you see him live. What I like is Henley at 6'7 and Carrington at 6'5 have some great length to them as defenders and as ball handlers, and they are both known for their defense. And yes, they're freshmen, so they'll have some growing pains. I'd love to get a PG from the portal who can get by people and create for others, and that's what we don't have right now. Lots of holes to fill. You might say after watching again last night that the interior defense and rebounding needs a SLIGHT boost...That should be greatly improved next year, no matter who they bring in from the portal.
Carrington is listed as 6'3 and Henley as 6'5, so really closer to 6'2 and 6'4. Not small but average at best size wise.

I saw Carrington leaving the Indiana game. I was taken aback at how tall he was. He is at a minimum 6’4, maybe even 6’5.

I am guessing those might be the #20 ranked players in the state of California the past few years
Wow. That’s a lot of effort and I am concerned for his mental well being if he expends that much effort on here.

also 2022 is a very good year for Cali wings - a vintage which will age perfectly

LOL. It took like 10 minutes to compile that. You said you'd take the 20th ranked player in Cali any time. Just showing that maybe that is a misguided plan. Probably plenty of great players at 19, 21, etc. 20 has not been kind. Though I think Yu may be a P6 contributor someday

I have no idea what to think about Henley as I've only seen a few highlights of him. That's why I said I don't know about Henley. If he was from MN I might say something different because I would have seen him play and heard what others who know basketball well think of him. I say that about Carrington because I have seen him play numerous times, and know numerous coaches in HS's and AAU who have coached him or coached against him.

I hope you're right about Henley, I just have no idea as all I've seen is highlights and every kid looks good on those. Carrington and Payne both look great seeing them in person, and Ola-Joseph will see time as well because he will defend. We have a good class coming in, and it will feel like 6 newcomers because Fox and Ihnen will feel new after sitting out the year and they both will contribute a ton.
im not saying one bad thing about Carrington as i think he will have a very good career with the gophers....was just pointing out that its natural to have bias toward a MN kid.

and on your 2nd note. Ola-Joseph will get very little, if any, minutes next year.

ten minutes to look them up maybe 🤔- but all or lack of college stats - Nope 👎

Regardless I’m pro our guys until proven otherwise and I’m not talking one and dines that filled out the roster this year.

Yes, and I was just sharing, without any bias towards Minnesota kid. I’ve never seen Henley play. In fact, I think it's kind of funny to read some of the takes on here of people who haven't seen kids play, whether they are from MN or not and often see them playing right away. We do have three MN kids, who I have seen play and hear positive things from reputable sources, who each will be ready to contribute. How much they play will be determined on the transfers, etc. Ola-Joseph, unless they bring in some legitimate transfer, will get some minutes because he is athletic and can defend. He won't start or play 20+ minutes a game, but he'll play meaningful minutes based on what is on the roster now.

Ihnen should also see significant court time

He likely will, but I'm not sure that's a good thing.

Ihnen is a lot like Charles Buggs to me. Physically looks the part, flashes for a game or two, but there's no consistency. That actually maybe a slight towards Buggs, who had better numbers his first two seasons than Ihnen.

You must not internet well. Takes seconds to look up guys on sports reference.

I’m hopeful Henley is a 4 time all American. Realistically I think of the commits we have there will be some disappointment and attrition.

the nature of a fan is to be optimistic.

the backup QB is a potential star if the coach would just put him in the game.

that pitcher at Double-A will be great when he comes up to the majors.

and that recruit that most of us have never seen outside of some edited highlight tapes is going to be great when he starts playing for "our" school.

if every coach was right about every recruit, there would be a lot more teams contending for conference titles and making tournament runs.

In the end, you are still looking at 16- and 17-year-old kids and projecting what they might be like in 3 or 4 years. a lot of guys who were HS studs wind up playing 5 minutes a game at college.

in the end, you can dwell on the failures and disappointments, or celebrate the successes.

or you can be like Spaulding and Burner, and just sh*t on everything.

I will say this: Ben and staff must have believed they could work with Ihnen. 1. They kept him. 2. Ben reported in the off season that Ihnen was making great strides and doing all the right things.

Ihnen has an incredible ability to react and get his hands on the ball in space. When Pitino started to position him as more of a 4 and had him working in the paint instead of floating on the outside, he showed that ability. He needed more strength, but he can rebound and block shots, no doubt about it.

While it’s fun to make projections the truth is that nobody knows what these freshman will provide next year. I don’t think many thought Oturu and Kalschuer would be as good as they were as freshman and I remember many a post hyping up Isaiah Washington as a star before he ever played a game.

I'm kind of with you except I thought he played really good d, and can hit outside shots which not sure how great Buggs was at either. Needs to be able to get to the rim some though, I don't think he was a ever much of a threat on the drive.

I gave up non trying to win the internet - I’m mere for 💩 and giggles basically - most things about getting older suck, but not the unrelenting compulsion to be “right.” - which was a serious fault of mine in my salad days - not casting aspirations on you or other posters.

I’d rather be happy than right most dayz, it’s just so much easier.

Ihnen is likely a better defender, but Buggs was a better shooter. Ihnen was a terrible 3 point shooter last season at 22%.

wasn't he in the 40's his freshman year, seems to be all over the place. It'll be interesting to see who is on the roster and getting minutes, especially if someone like Dawson Garcia were to jump in.

If you go see Carrington at court level you will see he is not 6'3. I'm only going off of Henley being listed at 6'7 in some places. He was reportedly growing like crazy, so his listing at 6"5 may be a bit short as well. Very good size for 2's, I would say.
