Good, Bad, Ugly from this weekend vs the Boilers
Good
1. Weber Neels got back on track. Went 4-11 with two doubles and a HR. They absolutely need his bat in the middle of the lineup.
2. Brayden Hellum went 5-12 with a double.
3. Jack Spanier went 4-10 and continues to be a good threat as a book-end of the order (he hit 9th on Fri & Sat and then leadoff on Sunday)
4. Friday & Sunday bullpen were lights out. Capomaccio, Sperry and Clausen went a combined 12 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 11 K. Fantastic performance against a tough Boiler lineup.
5. Easton Richter went 2-5 on Sunday with a 3B and HR.
Bad
1. Berkland cooled off in a big way, going 1-10 on the series
2. Starting pitching really struggled. Selvig, Remington and Thorsteinson went a combined 11.1 IP, 19 H, 13 ER, 3 BB, 9 K and 3 HBP
3. Parkner Knoll went a combined 2-12 with 5 K. Simply can't have that from leadoff hitter, which might be why he got moved down in the order on Sunday.
Ugly
1. The fieldling....Woof. Officially it was 5 errors on the weekend. But unofficially there were a couple more. Berkland is really struggling in LF right now.
2. Purdue talks smack. No other way around it. On Friday their pitcher Cook comes in the 9th and gives up a single and 2 walks. You'd think a shaky performance like that would leave him humbled if he escaped with a win but you'd be wrong. When Richter grounded out he was talking smack to him all the way down the baseline and then during the team celebration they kept gesturing him to get off the field. Umps had to step in. Then on Saturday when one of the Boilers hit an absolute moonshot to the upper deck, there was a massive bat flip and trash talking all around the bases. Umps had to step in and give Purdue a warning. Then Purdue coach Greg Goff (who also coaches 3B) started squawking at McDevitt and the umpires had to once again step in. I didn't see if anything happened on Sunday. But needless to say, I was impressed with Purdue's performance but not their behavior. Are they the Vols of the Big Ten?
