All things fall practice camp

I'm sorry but Claeys needs to mix in a salad from time-to-time. It's neither healthy and/or safe to be that big nor is it a good example of discipline for the players.

Gophers receiving corps gets an overhaul

"They can see it in Drew Wolitarsky’s chiseled biceps, and the crisper route running by Donovahn Jones. They see KJ Maye at full speed again, finally healthy, and a herd of tall, fleet freshmen, led by Melvin Holland Jr., hungry for their chance."

Wow, tough crowd, my comment wasn't meant as a rip on Richardson, I've actually been quite impressed. Anyone claiming that a sub 6'0" interior defensive lineman in the B1G isn't an anomaly though just isn't paying attention.

1500: Sandell: This time around, there's no question QB job is Leidner's

Based on early observations in camp, one thing is clear: it is critical that Leidner stays healthy throughout the season.

As was the case last year, the Gophers will enter the season without a backup quarterback who has game experience. Chris Streveler and Conor Rhoda, widely regarded as No. 2 and No. 3 on the depth chart, both redshirted in 2014.

One must careful to judge too much off only a few practices, but apart from Leidner, the Gophers' quarterbacks have had plenty of shaky moments so far in camp - misreads and misplaced passes.

The questionable depth at quarterback ups the pressure on Leidner. By fully backing him as their starter at this point, the Gophers are heavily reliant on his progress and perceived potential. That isn't a problem for Leidner. In fact, he embraces the challenging role.

"I feel ready for it," Leidner said. "I'm ready to take this team and just roll with it all the way through camp and into the season."

GopherSports: Fall Camp '14: Quarterbacks Preview

After a 2013 season in which it was sometimes unclear who would line up under center for the Minnesota football team from week-to-week, the Golden Gophers will begin Jerry Kill’s fourth season as head coach with a clearer sense of who their go-to quarterback will be.

Entering his third season with the program, redshirt sophomore Mitch Leidner is ready to lead the Gophers’ offense in 2014. The head of a youthful, five-member quarterback unit overseen by fourth-year QB coach Jim Zebrowski, Leidner gained valuable experience last season and will look to build on that with a veteran supporting cast.

Hartman: Claeys says Gophers defense should keep getting better

Since Tracy Claeys took over as defensive coordinator in 2011, the Gophers football team has shown great improvement. Claeys said he believes that will continue in 2014.

“I think we should play better than we did a year ago,” Claeys said. “I’ll be disappointed if we’re not improved. We have more depth back, not only that has played in Big Ten games but those kids have played well in Big Ten games. We’re looking forward to having a good group of kids back who have played an awful lot in the Big Ten.”

STrib: Sizing up the Gophers backup quarterback options; other freshmen impressions

Redshirt freshman Chris Streveler is the No. 2 starter. Will he be ready if Leidner gets injured? If not, next in line is Conor Rhoda, another redshirt freshman who walked on out of Cretin-Derham Hall.

Streveler, from Crystal Lake, Ill., has had up-and-down moments through the first week of practice, but he delivered the biggest offensive highlight Wednesday.

Streveler hit wide receiver Logan Hutton in stride on a skinny post for a 28-yard touchdown pass. For the celebration, Streveler ran to the end zone and jumped all over Hutton.

“Coach Kill always talks about having juice, so that was fun,” Streveler said. “It’s always fun to make a big play in practice. It was the first live period [of camp], so it was pretty sweet.”

Ohhh. Wasn't really impressed by the words for DRM.

I disagree. First when you run the ball 69% of the time or whatever pass protection isn’t exactly at a premium and secondly and more importantly an opponents pass rush should be at a minimal when you can effectively execute the play action pass which is something we should be able to do with how often and effectively we will run the ball.

Interesting, Jephte Matilus is moving up the depth charts at FB.

"A converted linebacker, Jephte Matilus, has quickly moved toward the top of the depth chart at fullback, as the Gophers search for Mike Henry’s replacement.

“The thing that’s impressed me most about [Matilus] is he’s not making a lot of mental mistakes,” offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover said. “I mean it’s not an easy position -- just go right, go left and hit somebody. There’s a lot that goes into it. Not only physically is he bringing it, but he’s not making a lot of mental mistakes.”

Limegrover said Matilus, Miles Thomas and Tyler Hartman have all played well at fullback.

“We were nervous about it,” Limegrover said. “It’s nice to have a guy like Jephte. Miles Thomas is stepping up, and then obviously Tyler being healthy, it gives us a little more sense of security.”

I actually kind of agree with this. While our QB and WR problems from last year are well documented, I think our pass blocking was porous overall and contributed to the issues quite a bit. They need to really step up and give our young WRs time to run their routes and our QB time so he doesn't develop happy feet and/or a fumbling problem. If our OL can really take a step up and give our guy Mitch time then it's going to help tremendously.

There's definitely some talent in the receiving dept. I just hope we can get them the ball.

It would be nice if a couple of the veterans stepped up this year like Maye and Fruechte.

+100. It would be nice. I still have hope for KJ. Issac, not so much. Have never been impressed. I hope I'm wrong.

Obviously practice does not equal game, but, this is the second time I've read Kill talking about Cobb's play on special teams. I can't imagine him having any sort of special teams role. Missing something?
If Cobb wants to have any chance of playing at the next level he's going to need to be able to play on special teams.

I'm not sure that I want Fruechte taking time away from Melvin Holland Jr.

I agree that our pass blocking needs to improve. I don't think that Mitch's fumbling is a function of the pass blocking though - he does not tuck the ball "high and tight," the ball swings away from his body and he is easily stripped. That is something that he has to improve on.
