All Things COVID-19 College Football Impact

From ESPN on Sunday:

Commissioners of the Power 5 conferences held an emergency meeting on Sunday, as there is growing concern among college athletics officials that the upcoming football season and other fall sports can't be played because of the coronavirus pandemic, sources told ESPN.

Several sources have indicated to ESPN that Big Ten presidents, following a meeting on Saturday, are ready to pull the plug on its fall sports season, and they wanted to gauge if commissioners and university presidents and chancellors from the other Power 5 conferences -- the ACC, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC -- will fall in line with them.

Sources told ESPN that a vast majority of Big Ten presidents have indicated that they would vote to postpone football season, hopefully to the spring. A Big Ten official confirmed to ESPN that no official vote took place during Saturday's meeting.

Welp...☹

Would say the writing is on the wall that fall college sports are dead.

Sorry PitinoFan, they’re making the right call and the fall season is going to be cancelled.

You will live. You’ll get the vaccine. This bastard will be obliterated like polio.

If something does go wrong, some players may get sick - but it's the schools that would be open to potential liability.

and those players who are pushing the "let us play" angle - would they agree to sign waivers that would prevent them from taking any legal action if they do become sick and suffer any lasting consequences?

“That shotgun approach risks the economy, culture, education, health, and security of the vast majority of Americans who won't get sick or die.“
The vast majority of Americans will not die. However, I wouldn’t be so quick to say that the majority will not get sick. Like Mike Osterholm has said ... this virus has become a forest fire looking for wood to burn.
And we have no idea of the long-term health effects in patients that have seemingly recovered from moderate to severe disease. The disease will be with us for years. We can effectively mitigate its spread, if we have the intestinal fortitude to buck up and do just a few things right. We don’t have to hit a home run, just a lot of singles will win the game.

They probably would sign a waiver right now.

I‘d love to be a fly on the wall at these meetings. What will change in the intervening period? Are they on board with the theory of heterogenous susceptibility (and hence lower herd immunity threshold)? Are they hoping the $3T stimulus package includes a couple billion in handouts for the Power 5? It’s a rounding error!

They will try to make you get the vaccine. No way i am getting it. Makes no sense. Why don’t they have a vaccine for H1N1. ??? Pleas explain that one.

As I’ve said before, no one will be forced to get the vaccine, but I hope they implement — and I will vote for whomever supports this — harsh lifestyle restrictions on those who refuse to get it.

Not able to qualify for government back mortgages, student financial aid, no driver’s license, no fishing/hunting licenses, no new vehicle/motorcycle/boat/RV registrations.

Hope businesses and schools do their part too. No Costco memberships. Can’t enroll. Would like to see airlines require proof of vaccination to fly.

Etc.

You wish coming true (perhaps)
If I was czar, not only would all college sports be cancelled, but all in-person class at all schools would be cancelled for the fall.

Pretty much silly to do otherwise, when the end to the nightmare is right around the corner.

Which is why it is going to be tough to have a reliable vaccine.
You’re right. No vaccine is 100% reliable, but, they do provide some measure of herd immunity. That’s all we can hope for in this situation. Those who choose not to be vaccinated must be prepared to face some social and economic barriers. It’s their choice.
