All Things COVID-19 College Football Impact

I realize taking ridiculous and extreme stances is sort of your schtick. Yes, flu can cause serious complications and death. Not as commonly as COVID-19 but I gather relative risk really isn’t a lot of people’s bag. It’s not only the flu, but I’d also advise you to not look into complications of strep throat. You might never let your kids go to school again.

”Sinus and ear infections are examples of moderate complications from flu, while pneumonia is a serious flu complication that can result from either influenza virus infection alone or from co-infection of flu virus and bacteria. Other possible serious complications triggered by flu can include inflammation of the heart (myocarditis), brain (encephalitis) or muscle (myositis, rhabdomyolysis) tissues, and multi-organ failure (for example, respiratory and kidney failure). Flu virus infection of the respiratory tract can trigger an extreme inflammatory response in the body and can lead to sepsis, the body’s life-threatening response to infection. Flu also can make chronic medical problems worse. For example, people with asthma may experience asthma attacks while they have flu, and people with chronic heart disease may experience a worsening of this condition triggered by flu.

Apples to watermelon.

Flu is known. That’s the reason we accept the small risk of death or severe symptom. There won’t be any surprises.

Covid is still scientifically largely unknown and medically unknown.

Rondale Moore just opted out. At this point anyone goid isn't going to play. Not much incentive for the 1st 2nd 3rd rd guys to rusk anything. Or for that fact the guys who won't play at all.

When Bateman did, I was assured that no one else would even though someone else already had

I agree that we will likely see many 1st round guys opt out. If I was a 2nd/3rd round guy, I think I'd stay in and try to up my stock. I assume they can still opt out during the season if they have cases on the team, etc.

You were implying that I (and others) may not send their kid to school due to the risks involved with strep throat. I cited a real life example of my own kid who had strep multiple times and we still sent him to school. Then I posted facts about death rates of covid vs strep. Now you are calling that theatrics and I'm an asshole? Color me confused.

And for the record we chose to send our kids to school (hybrid) this fall vs 100% online (those were the only choices we had). So I'm not someone that is freaking out.

BTW, the “***hole comment at the end of my post was a re-quote from Mpls. I didn’t realize I lacked the proper quote notation until rereading this tonight. I try to be more civil than Mpls, but may fail at times. I didn’t call you an ***hole. I reserve the right to in the future 😃

Really, because you seemed unaware. I think there is a huge amount of unawareness of potential serious illnesses because we simply don’t like to think about it. Diabetics, for example are oftentimes in deep denial despite all kinds of serious life and limb and eyesight complications.

Just because I’m glib and a dope, doesn’t mean the non-novel, seasonal flu isn’t all but exactly characterized scientifically and medically.

Corona is unknown. And that’s what makes it scary. It doesn’t make any sense, whatsoever, that so very few under the age of X die or get severe symptoms, with 30-40% not even noticing symptoms at all .... and yet, rarely we see young, completely healthy people dying from it.

The Big Sky football conference has moved football to the Spring of 2021.

My gut tells me it's going to be down to the P5 conferences in short order. And then we'll find out just how much those conference want to play football.

meanwhile, the TV networks are sh*tting bricks at the thought of not having college football to fill hours and hours of programming.

This has all been handled incredibly poorly. As with my kids’ school district there is no plan, no visible leadership, zero creative solutions leading to agitation in the rank and file workers, students, parents, families.

What is the safety/testing plan. Daily testing? Rapid or PCR?
What are the return to play criteria for COV+?
If a player test positive does that effect eligibility of teammates - what is considered significant contact (will they follow CDC definition of 15+ minutes of close contact without masks).

Not as much as you think. ESPN will have NBA play-off games in September. Fox will have MLB games (hopefully). There are multiple major golf tournaments at odd times (The Masters in November.)

I'm not saying they don't want college football. But the screwed up nature of the sports calendar means they don't need it as badly as they usually would.

Typical. You offer nothing. No effort peanut thrower.

You wouldn’t have been able to do any better. You’d charge in and say “you should’ve been doing this, this, and that!!” And they’d say, of course, “No shit??? If it were that easy and simple, we would’ve done that genius”. There are probably a million factors complicating those responses that you’re clueless about.

You're awfully gullible if you think that all the scientists, medical professionals, and executives at our major universities could come up with a better plan than the self-proclaimed "smartest guy in the room" on GH.

Alright, give us the protocol Minnesota is using this season.

Can you list some of the complicating factors? I have an open mind.

I don’t have to give or offer anything, because I’m not acting like I could do any better, as you are. I know I couldn’t do any better.

Complicating factor means any reason where it’s not possible to do the simple, obvious thing that you (would) propose.

You have no solutions, only complaints. That’s the definition of useless.

Domino's will start to fall tomorrow word is a power 5 conference or school from power 5 is opting out

I heard the FBI was going to shake down Ferentz a few weeks ago, so....need more proof. What school is this little birdie squawking about?

A digression: A couple of hours ago I had a (questionably sane) individual tell me in painstaking detail that Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and the rest of the upper Hollywood elite is hooked on adenochrome, the blood of traumatized youngsters. Purportedly it is not only a better high than cocaine but reverses the aging process - and Weinstein and Epstein were in on it. This individual also told me there are millions of children in caves 40-80 miles below the surface of the earth where human sacrifices, torture, mutilation occur and “they’re all in on it”. I have to say, even for me this was a bit out there. If I disappear after posting this you know it’s true...

Well, the Univ of Arizona invested in a testing facility for its students. Several manufacturers produce rapid antigen diagnostic tests. I’d guess they are looking for new markets? There are CDC protocols for return to work for private and public sector workers. Sure, there are special considerations for students and student athletes, but that’s why they get paid the big bucks.

If no season occurs, no revenue occurs, sports and programs fold , employees are furloughed and laid off ecause they dithered and discussed instead of planning and doing well, yeah, I’m going to complain. I don’t think that’s out of line.

Hey, I’m just asking for the plan. Where is it? Practice starts next week?

Every post you make suggests you believe this about yourself.

The big red flag here is that you have so little information that you don’t even know whether this is referring to one team or an entire P5 conference. In other words, you have nothing.

Exactly. Where have the tests and contact tracing been? If we as a country would have been on this from the get go we would be in slightly better shape. It wouldn’t be back to normal but the economy would be in better shape at least.
Even the countries that have dealt with it the best aren’t to the point of having packed events though.
I just keep trying to stay positive and think about the things we can do and remember the bad ass season that was 2019

Speaking of plans and protocols - Iowa is playing HS football this fall, with a shortened season. To prepare for the season, the Iowa HS Athletic Association has put out a guide for football with all of the covid-related requirements. It is several pages long and goes into great detail on everything teams have to do to comply.

Here is a short sample:

Practice/Game Protocols
  • Sanitizing: Hand sanitizing should be used as much as possible. The NFHS Sports Medicine Advisory Committee recommends using hand sanitizer when going to and from the field. Players are encouraged to provide their own hand sanitizer and/or sanitizing wipes.
  • Mandatory Timeouts: An officials’ timeout will be taken every 4 minutes of game clock time in order for teams to properly sanitize and hydrate during the contest. This timeout is to be two minutes in length. In addition, the intermission between the 1st and 2nd quarter and the 3rd and 4th quarter should also be two minutes in length in order to allow for proper sanitizing and hydration.
Stopping the game every 4 minutes to sanitize and hydrate. that's going to make for some real flow to the game. And, as I said, there are pages of this stuff. For High School. Lots of fun stuff about how to handle the ball - how teams have to stand on the sidelines, etc. google it if you want to read the whole thing.

Imagine what they'll have to come up with for college football.

Constant hits to the head from football is more dangerous then covid to the average human

Working on it. Very fluid.

If they think it’s dicey now waiting to start sports at the peak of cold and flu season will throw another wrench into the works and complicate things. My (humble) opinion is it’s go or no go, at this point. Of course we’re all just guessing at things that cannot be predicted, based on very imperfect understanding of a virus and the nature of human immunity (ask Stefan Gildemeister about that).

I wonder if they (ie Power 5) could possibly do daily testing and for all intents and purposes eliminate spread at games and practices, for a small fration of the cost of cancelling the season.

Four minutes? Why not five? What if someone says three minutes?

And if the season is canceled they probably all get Covid anyways

Well, being a bit cynical my thoughs on a potential Big Ten or NCAA mandated delay until the spring revolve around it potentially devised with the assumption the players will essentially reach a high level of community immunity by the spring - by doing social things that young people do. If they aren’t socializing on campus (and under the legal shepherding of the school) they will surely be socializing in their hometowns with the old high school and townie crowd.

With a lower rate of infection by spring, high level of community immunity the organizations are largely (or at least moreso) off the hook for legal liability. It also gives them time to (perhaps) devise a testing plan that has so far failed to materialize.

Getting the spread to a managable level will ensure fast, successful contact tracing, which is the key.
