All Things Collection of Pitino/Gophers Articles Thread

Here is another Golden Pitino connection.

"Few athletes or coaches have enjoyed the kind of day Louisville coach Rick Pitino experienced Saturday when he coached his Cardinals to a victory in the final four, advancing to the national title game, while a horse he co-owns named Goldencents won the Santa Anita Derby, earning a spot in next month's Kentucky Derby."

More Golden Pitino publicity for the next month.

Right on, rrjack. I heard the very same thing on the radio yesterday. A parlay win for Coach Rick.

Watching his press conference on SportsCenter right now. He said that Richard getting the Gophers job is one of the best things that has ever happened to him.

Sports center also showed it on the SportsCenter express - Pitinos big week. Quite a few clips of Richard.

Dad Rick visiting with Son Rich, in the future:

Rich, "I have a offer to become an NBA Coach."

Rick: "Where?"

Rich: "Minnesota Timberwolves."

Rick: "Good money for sure, then you'll get your ass fired."

Rich: "What can you share with me about your experiences of successful college coach to fired NBA coach, back to successful college coach?"

Rick: "It's all about money, Son. Where is your heart?"

Rich: "GopherLand."

Rick: "Follow your heart and stay happy."

Rich: "Thanks, Dad. I love you."

Rick: "Back at ya, son. Take good care of Jill, the pups, and YOUR Gophers. I am proud of you."

Here's a video interview with KSTP: http://kstp.com/article/12531/

Doesn't break any new ground, but I love a couple of his answers, especially about how he feels about some people saying he got the job because of his last name.

Man, he is one polished dude for his age. He is an old basketball soul at 30. I think because of his experience under his father when young and then his assistant experience with Donovan.. he is more experienced in hoops than most 40 year old coaches.. I am more excited every time I hear him talk.

The guy has hops. Now, the hard part will be finding the high level recruits to come here and be successful.

I like the future.

Anybody knows why he came back to LU from Florida? Was Billy making room for his friend who coached at Arkansas?

Go Gophers

I'm pretty sure he was promoted to Associate Head Coach when he came back to Louisville and was the main guy behind his dad.

GI Radio summary:

- Holton could have been a high major player if not for the legal issues.
- Kimani Young was recruiting Shavar Newkirk at FIU. They think it might be a good idea to bring him along. Fits Pitino's system.
- Tyler Ulis from Chicago is another guy the GI guys think Pitino should go after. Taylor and Tubby were recruiting Ulis.
- Mentioned three realistic assistants with local connections - Tom Ostrom and Jared Nunness, were the only two names I caught. Nunness is obviously the Baylor dude with connections to Tyus. Ostrom is a U grad who is currently an assistant for Dayton. He's been an assistant for Billy Donovan (2 years), film coordinator for Donovan (5 years), and an assistant at Arkansas for 4 years.
- They think he'll bring in one guy with local connections. Ryan James doesn't think Trent Tucker will be a candidate. "He just doesn't have any coaching experience. You can't all of a sudden just jump in...I just don't see it." Tucker is a millionaire, "he's made it; he's established," and James can't see him taking a job as a "60-hour assistant coach."

GI then talked with Howie Lindsey from CardinalSports.com...
- On Louisville not being invited to the B1G: "Louisville's academic profile has kept it out of some leagues."
- On Pitino: I saw him grow up from a good, young, hungry recruiter to not only a strong recruiter, but an excellent basketball coach. "Just phenomenal." Goes on to say how Pitino made some crucial practice and in-game changes. "He's everything his dad is."
- There's a chance the Louisville AD takes Richard Pitino after his dad retires.
- His style is more like Billy Donovan's than his dad's.
- Pitino is good at teaching zone defense.
- "Lieberman's very, very good...very good x-and-o guy." You'll probably get a couple of recruiters and one x-and-o guy. Lieberman would probably be the x-and-o guy. However, Lieberman also has a lot of connections in South Florida.
- On potentially playing Louisville in the future: "Let's meet in Indy and call it the Woodland creatures bowl."

per the AP:

“He said we’re going to do individual workouts before practice. He’s going to get with every player, and he’s going to run them, and he’s going to make sure that you’re working on your weaknesses,” Hollins said. “So I really like that. I’m really excited about that part.”
