All Things Collection of Pitino/Gophers Articles Thread

Just an early take on my part (we'll know more in a month or so)...

The fact that we haven't heard a single whisper about a key player transferring (Hollins, Hollins, Coleman, EE) and that they all seem fired up about the hire tells me the returning players were ready to hear a new voice, and (presumably) are excited about the possibility of playing for a "young gun" preaching a new style. Seems like usually at this point in these situations there'd be some/more grumbling about player defections. Doesn't seem to be the case here, at least among the Gophers' best players.

That's a real positive. Keep those 4 on board, for sure, and Pitino has a solid base with which to start. Not great, but more than enough to remain competitive in his 1st season.

Per Marcus: Buggs was not at the press conference but was at the team meeting beforehand. Hopefully he just had class or something.

His response to me:

@SKOORB_SIWEL The Gophers are saying it was likely class. He was with the team at 8 am this morning when Pitino spoke to players.

Forgive me if this one has been posted yet: http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/...ys-son-is-ready-for-Minnesota-job-4410131.php

"I drove him harder than I drove Billy so he's more than ready," Rick Pitino said Thursday in Atlanta, where his Cardinals are preparing to take on Wichita State in the Final Four. "What he did this year at Florida International, I never thought anybody could do. He took walk-ons, eight new players, he turned around a bad academic situation and won 18 games and was a bucket away from going to the NCAA (tournament) his first year. So he is ready to coach. I feel bad that I drove him that hard, now I'm happy I did."

But it wasn't until Teague called Donovan earlier this week that Pitino emerged as a serious candidate.
"He asked me who do I know; someone who is maybe not on the radar, someone who was young and hungry," Donovan told The Associated Press in a phone interview.

Florida Gulf Coast's Enfield was mentioned, but he was already negotiating with USC.

"One guy you need to talk to," Donovan told Teague, "is Richard Pitino."

Donovan and Teague have developed a strong relationship dating to Teague's days at VCU. The first basketball coach Teague worked with there was Anthony Grant, a former assistant for Donovan. When Grant left for Alabama, Teague went to another Donovan assistant in Smart, who has emerged as one of the hottest young coaches in the country.

"I told him, 'If you don't hire him now, you're going to hear from him three, four, five years from now and say, 'I had a chance to hire this guy,'" Donovan said.

But after some reconnaissance work on Teague, associate athletic director Mike Ellis and the program in general, Rick Pitino endorsed the job to his son.

"After checking it out, I just got the most glowing reports about all of them," Rick Pitino said. "They were all at VCU when they hired Shaka. Billy recommended Shaka. I just heard so many great things about how they support their coaches. That's all I needed to hear."

The good news came on Wednesday afternoon.

"I got a text from him and it said, 'Everything's great. Call me. And Go Gophers,'" Rick Pitino said. "I had to get off the phone. I rushed a very important phone call to get off the phone to get on the phone with him. And then my wife and I just hugged."

+1 I'll feel better if Ellis recommits.

Refuse to click on this

Me too, GIP. I will read Bleeds summaries of Reusse's articles, but I won't click to him. If I miss something that he says is important, oh, never mind, I won't miss anything important.

I did. Its a nothingburger.

Kids resume is a kids resume. Is he qualified? Maybe. Maybe not - we'll see.

I'd love to see Reusee's resume when he was thirty. If he was sober enough then to complete one.

I think it is legitimate to point out the kid might not be qualified due to age and inexperience - PR is fair to comment on that - but a minor detail like this isn't as much an intentional lie as a distortion and that happens all the time with kids as the move from GAs to interns to assistants. Especially as they try to land somewhere. Its only after they have been somewhere that their resume 'solidifies'. Its why older professionals just leave that early mess off their resume entirely. But when you are young that's hard.

I don't blame Pat for questioning Pitino's readiness. I just think he's being over the top about it so he can claim later that he was right all along (which he won't be able to hopefully). And I believe even he hopes he's wrong, giving him a way to play both sides of the street.

On the air this PM, he did clarify that he prefers the kid to Tubby, but his guy was Flip. And he recognizes that Musselman was a youngster when he took this job, but that's different because "I just loved Muss." It's pretty obvious he has a discomfort with the new and unfamiliar.

Sid Hartman: Pitino impresses right off the bat

If Richard Pitino can coach as well as he can talk, then Gophers athletic director Norwood Teague has hit the jackpot.

Pitino, the 30-year-old son of Louisville superstar coach Rick Pitino, is a real salesman. The new men’s basketball coach displayed a positive personality at Friday’s news conference, and that charm should result in the successful recruiting of some outstanding players.

I’ve attended many news conferences at the University of Minnesota concerning new head coaches in major sports, and I don’t believe anyone made a better impression than Pitino did when introduced as the successor to Tubby Smith.

Gophers basketball: Will Richard Pitino be Norwood Teague's legacy?

Fair or unfair, Norwood Teague's legacy at Virginia Commonwealth was discovering Shaka Smart. Teague hired the Florida assistant as VCU basketball coach. Smart led the school to the Final Four in his second season.

Fair or unfair, Teague now has created at least an early legacy at the University of Minnesota with another basketball move. He is the athletics director who replaced Tubby Smith with Richard Pitino.

Chip Scoggins: Recruiting is key for Pitino

By the time Richard Pitino stepped onto a stage inside Williams Arena on Friday morning, he already had begun the process of selling himself and his vision to this state’s crop of high-level recruits.

My favorite line from the press conference was when he was talking recruiting and going against his father.. “If I’m not going against him (Rick), I sure hope he’s helping us as much as possible.” Ummm... that wouldn't suck. I'm cautiously optimistic about our recruiting the next couple of years.. we will see.

I caught that also. I'm wondering if we don't build a practice facility, will the Louisville fans build one for us?

Back in the 1920's, every able bodied male in the state was required to put in at least two weeks building public roads for the state or counties. I think we could get this baby built in no time if we just re-instituted this. It would be like the Egyptians building the pyramids.

Please don't let it take that long, though.

STrib: Despite youth, Pitino looks to buck trend and make his mark

“Age is the most underrated thing,” said Steve Masiello, a longtime friend of Pitino and current coach at Manhattan College. “Experience is the key. He’s been doing this since he was 17 years old. You could be 55 and not have the experience Rich has had.

“The players he’s coached the places he’s been. [Working under] Billy Donovan, Rick Pitino. Age is meaningless.”

Sid Hartman: Former boss sings Pitino's praises

“What he did with this basketball team and these players, making them believe in something, I’ve never seen a job like that,” Garcia said. “Minnesota has just landed a great basketball coach. He is a complete package as far as a coach and a leader of men.
