Charley Walters: Gophers' Richard Pitino calls Rashad Vaughn in short order

New University of Minnesota men's basketball coach Richard Pitino, hired Wednesday evening, April 3, wasted little time contacting at least one of Minnesota's nationally coveted high school junior recruits, shooting guard Rashad Vaughn of Robbinsdale Cooper. Pitino telephoned Vaughn on Wednesday night and told him his teams will play the same style he used at Florida International, which he coached to an 18-14 record this season.

It would be surprising if Pitino didn't also call top juniors Tyus Jones of Apple Valley and Reid Travis of DeLaSalle.

As of late Thursday afternoon, Pitino had not contacted Rene Pulley, who operates the nationally renowned Pulley AAU basketball program in the Twin Cities. That's surprising. Jones and Travis will play for the Pulley team that will compete in Nike circuit tournaments in Los Angeles and Hampton, Va., this month. Those tournaments will be open recruiting periods for NCAA Division I coaches.

"I don't have any feelings (about Pitino's hiring) one way or another," Pulley said Thursday. "That's a decision the University of Minnesota had to make, and we'll all just have to wait and see if it's the correct decision.

"Everybody deserves a fair chance without criticism before they even had one day on the job. All our questions will be answered in time when we see what kind of job he's able to do."

PiPress: Gophers basketball: Norwood Teague picked Billy Donovan's brain in seeking Richard Pitino

"Norwood just kind of picked my brain about some younger guys that were out there," Donovan said. "I mentioned Richard to him because he worked with me for two years. In his first year (as Florida International coach), he did a terrific job. I just told Norwood that he would be a great guy to sit down and talk to. After spending some time with Richard, he must have thought the world of him because he hired him."

What exactly is Rene Pulley's problem? This is the second snarky quote that I have seen from him today.

Sid Hartman: Pitino faces uphill battle with recruits

The time to fire him was not when next season’s recruiting class features the best group of Minnesota seniors in years. These were nationally ranked players — including Apple Valley’s Tyus Jones, Cooper’s Rashad Vaughn and DeLa- Salle’s Reid Travis — who Smith and his staff had been recruiting for years, and now a new coach coming staff will have a difficult time trying to sell a rebuilding Minnesota program to players who are used to winning.

That’s why it made a lot of sense to hire Flip Saunders, with his experience as a coach in college and the NBA, but it was pretty evident that even though he was offered the job, he turned it down because he couldn’t operate under Gophers athletic director Norwood Teague’s terms.

Well, it turned out before and after the Saunders negotiations that it was difficult to hire a coach. Teague didn’t contact incoming coach Richard Pitino until Monday and hired him two days later, after Teague was turned down by a number of other candidates. And Teague didn’t contact Eric Musselman until a few days ago, and the son of former Gophers and Wolves coach Bill Musselman was available if Teague hadn’t decided to hire Pitino.

STrib: Ready? New Gophers coach was born with a whistle

“When you work for [Rick] Pitino, it’s a different world you live in,” said Steve Masiello, coach at Manhattan College and a former assistant at Louisville with Richard Pitino and longtime friend of the family, who started out as a Knicks ball boy for Rick in sixth grade. “Rick Pitino would come into a staff meeting when you’re playing UConn on Big Monday, and you’re in charge of the game plan — you’re telling him what to do,” Masiello said. “I think that’s why Pitino’s guys have so much success after Rick is because he prepared us so well for that next step.”

What exactly is Rene Pulley's problem? This is the second snarky quote that I have seen from him today.

Tyus. They've had him for years now, and this is their shot on the big stage. They desperately want to see him go to Duke, MSU, Kansas or Kentucky so they can put it on their web site. This is a territorial thing. Other AAU programs (yes they do exist Rene) have made inroads in the Twin Cites area in recent years, and it chafes the Pulley boys who want to be the power brokers in this area. IMHO.

Doogie's The Scoops: Pitino has already spoken with Tyus Jones, Rashad Vaughn

Gophers basketball recruits Tyus Jones (Apple Valley) and Rashad Vaughn (Cooper) aren't talking to reporters this week, but they gladly took phone calls from new coach Richard Pitino on Wednesday night.

Vaughn, in particular, is said to have come away impressed. A likely future NBA player, he wants to play in an offense that will showcase his skill-set, and an offense that will run. Pitino will do that, or at least try. Former coach Tubby Smith often mentioned wanting to, but never really did.

Pitino tried to call the third of the local "Big 3", Reid Travis (DeLaSalle HS), but wasn't able to connect. Assume he will in the very near future.

Marcus blog: Gophers basketball: Should Richard Pitino hire an assistant with local ties?

“A coach has to make his own decision on that,” Hopkins basketball coach Ken Novak said. “I don’t think he should be pushed to hire a local guy. I would love those kinds of connections. But the coach has to be comfortable with it. I’m sure he has a list he’s looking at right now.”

really putting your reputation on the line doogie

Daize - That is one of the most overreaching assumptions I have read on this site and there have been many assumptions that have been made. How can you say that there was minimal impression made on Tyus? Second item is that this is Doogie reporting so it is just as likely he lost his train of thought and did not include a comment if it was made.

If they're going to run a lot of pick and rolls I have no doubt that Pitino will be looking to add a PG to this year's class. I think Andre's game is suited for that offense, but that's about it. Austin's handle just isn't good enough. Mav is more of a spot up shooter in a PG's body.

FSN: Minnesota players eager to work with Pitino

"It's never easy losing a coach that you've been with for three years. I think everyone's going to miss Coach Smith," said junior Austin Hollins. "But at the same time, he laid a foundation down. I think Coach Pitino's going to come in here, he's got the right vision, he's got the right goals in mind. I think he'll be ready to work and get us ready for next season."

"It's going to be exciting. I've always played with coaches quite a bit older than I am," Hollins said. "I think he's going to be able to relate to us a little bit more. He's just 10 years older than me, so it's going to be cool."
