Myron Medcalf: Pitino needs full buy-in from Minnesota

Hello, Richard Pitino (the folks around here will obviously call you Coach Pitino now).

I’d like to welcome you to Minnesota.

I’ve been in this state for more than a decade. And I covered the first four years of the Tubby Smith Era at the Star Tribune prior to my current tenure as a national college basketball writer with ESPN.com.

I think the Gophers made a good decision when they hired you on Wednesday. Honestly.

Thanks Bleed. I will now be sitting on my computer the rest of the night refreshing this thread!

AP: Minnesota hires FIU's Richard Pitino

''The great thing about Billy and my dad, they're always willing to give me advice,'' Pitino told The Associated Press in February. ''They understand where I'm at. I call Billy every single day, almost like I call my dad, and I'm so appreciative that they give the time to try to teach me. It's so exciting. For me, I can't try to be Billy Donovan, I can't try to be Rick Pitino. I've got to be my own man and play my own style, and it's been fun trying to figure it out.''

Myron's never ending vendetta against the U is getting tired.

STrib: Chart: The Richard Pitino File

THE QUOTE: “People always look at me like I’m Rick Pitino’s son, and I certainly am — he has molded and shaped me into the person I’ve become — but Billy Donovan was just as influential.” — Richard Pitino to the Palm Beach Post last month.

STYLE OF PLAY: After being hired at FIU, Pitino told the student paper, “Basketball-wise, we’re going to bring a new brand; we’re going to play up and down and press a lot. We’re really going to try and push the pace up offensively as well as defensively.” FIU averaged 69.1 points per game and ranked eighth nationally with 9.3 steals per game.

STrib: Gophers, Richard Pitino reach agreement in principle on head basketball job

“I like his pedigree,” former Gophers player and current booster Paul Presthus. “I like the fact that he’s learned at the feet of a couple of the leading college coaches today in his dad and Billy Donovan. Everything that I’ve heard and been able to check, he’s a quality individual, high energy, good recruiter.”

“I like what I’ve heard about him,” Gophers booster Lou Nanne said of Pitino. “I certainly trust Norwood and his group to make this choice.”

Tom Powers: Gophers' Pitino choice is a reach for a Big Ten coach

So it's come to this: The big names said no. The local favorite said no. And now this is a real reach. That's fine in a lot of places, but this is the Big Ten. This is a conference that has chewed up and spit out an awful lot of guys with more credentials than Rich Pitino. I don't think the other coaches are going to be overly impressed by the last name.

Rich will be nine years older than his seniors. Maybe he's a natural leader. We're about to find out. I truly wish him all the best. He's going to need it.

Bob Sansevere: Gophers bet Rick Pitino's name helps Richard, too

While the record wasn't eye-popping, it was the first winning season at FIU in 13 years. In a February interview with the Palm Beach Post, after ensuring that first winning season in more than a decade at FIU, Pitino said, "It'd be silly for me, at 30 years old, to act like I'm in the Hall of Fame. I don't deserve the respect my dad gets. I have to embrace that. I have to be myself. It's been great the way it's worked out."

Richard Pitino should be himself, but if he has success with the Gophers, having last-name recognition will have something to do with it.

What did he say in that post/link that warranted such an attack from you?

Constantly accusing the U of not supporting it's coaches/program. I honestly only read the first half, stopped reading once his attacks begun. I've heard it all before.

Myron's never ending vendetta against the U is getting tired.

It's not quite on the Reusse level. The criticism in that article was more or less fair - we do need new facilities. I'd prefer renovating the Barn to getting rid of it, though.

GopherHole: Gophers Reportedly Hire Richard Pitino to Lead Basketball Program

It what can be described as a bold and intriguing decision, Minnesota Gophers athletic director Norwood Teague has reportedly hired Richard Pitino as the new head coach. Pitino, only 30 years old, brings a big name in the college basketball world, and a reputation as a tireless worker and recruiter.

Zulgad: AD will say he got his guy but that doesn't appear to be the case

Get ready for the spin.

When Norwood Teague introduces Richard Pitino as the University of Minnesota men's basketball coach later this week - the Associated Press reported the deal was finalized Wednesday - the Gophers athletic director is going to tell you the 30-year-old is exactly the type of person he was looking to hire.

Teague will point to the success that previous unknowns Anthony Grant and Shaka Smart had under his employ at VCU and say that after one excellent season at Florida International University that Pitino is ready for the move to the Big Ten.

Nonetheless, it appears as if Teague's success (or lack of it) in making his first major coaching hire at Minnesota is no different than what his predecessor, Joel Maturi, went through in making his final significant hire at the school.

What did he say in that post/link that warranted such an attack from you?

Yeah, other than how I disagree about The Barn (I love the place, would be devastated to lose it), I thought his article was pretty fair...

I can't take credit for that - all accolades should be given to Norman Dale who sent me the link.

Go Gophers!!

I mean, did I watch it? Yea, but I acknowledged the creepiness, and I have to get a read on the new coach. His wife is...not Enfield's.

As the current head football coach at Vanderbilt University said, "I've been saying it for a long time, I will not hire an assistant coach until I've seen his wife. If she looks the part, and she's a D-I recruit (one of the nation's best-of-the-best), then you got a chance to get hired. That's part of the deal." Maybe Norwood Teague thinks along those lines. As I messaged to Bleed, she is not Mrs. Enfeld but at least she looks Minnesotan.

Interesting nuggets from @clbrown_cj -- Richard Pitino handled all scouting reports at Louisville, got his dad to spend more time on road.
