All Things Class of 2015 Recruiting - Class Finally Complete? Nope Chris Obekpa visit

I agree with PTalberg and Howie on this one as I fear we'd be very thin at that Wing. Of course, I wouldn't be upset with that class. :)

I guess my feeling is, if given the option today, I would take that class rather than the alternative. None of the three remaining in that hypothetical class are locks by any means. Take that class or roll the dice for what is behind door number two? Who knows?

In my opinion, we spend far too much time fixating on who plays what position. It's a good talker, but a mismatch on one end can be a strength on the other.

Give me the best players period. Pitino will figure it out. It's better to take the most talented player instead of taking a mediocre player that fills a need on the depth chart.

Point was... I'm not worried about a SF in the 15 class. Why did u just gloss over Morris filling ur position of concern?

I agree with you Hoop Dreams.

Sorry....my post was vague. My statement "I was wondering who might grab a hold of that one" was in reference to Unregistered User commenting on two inches.

Regarding the current topic, I completely agree with Madtown and (I think) you. I want players, regardless of position and regardless of their current home zip code. I don't want inferior talent in order to have a complete depth chart. I'm optimistic with the players we have currently on the roster (including Morris) and the players in that mythical '15 recruiting class that we would be just fine at the SF position.

I would be very happy with Dorsey, Jarvis, Alex and one of either Mcbrayer, Grimes, Walton, Sacar, Nwanko, Morrow, Shamet or Wilson. No matter what happens I would still consider this class better than last years simply because of Dorsey.

Have we given up on Clarke (or has he committed while I was away)?

Nwankwo is visiting with others in early September once school has started and all our players are here. Anyone have a list of players that will be visiting in early September? Thanks
I think Nwankwo IS the center we're looking at for '15. He's 6'10, 245 lbs., and plays a strong physical game. He definitely has the size and strength to play the 5 in college. I'd be very happy with a Dorsey, Jarvis, AI, Nwankwo class.

Some interesting quotes from Nwankwo's guardian:

On Minnesota: “They’ve been around for a long time, really since the beginning. They were at his high school games, they were at his AAU games so they’ve done a good job with that. As far as the school itself, we like the academics. It’s a very good academic school…they play in the Big 10 so it’s a good conference.”

On Academics: “Academics are very important to us, it’s not a cliche. We are taking the academics at the school very seriously. Programs that they offer, how they go about helping their student. Jon is a good student, he’s a national honor society kid, and he has over a 90 average. It’s important that we keep that up, we don’t want to fall down or anything.”

On Development: “The next thing is their ability to develop him. How good are you at developing a big man? How much time do you spend working with a big man? They take a long time to develop. They’re not like guards who get to dribble up and down the court and shoot a ton of shots every game. When you think about most of your back to the basket big men, they may only take that one dribble drop step four or five times a game. They might have less than 10 court dribbles in a game. It’s important that the school is dedicated to developing a big man.”

With the development of EE and Not so big Mo we should have alot to sell them on being able to develop Nwankwo.

Nwankwo has cut his list, but he got another offer from Temple today. So there could be another team in the fold right there (and any other team that offers going forward).

Temple was actually already on his final six even though he hadn't been offered.

According to 247, looks like he also has set up an official visit to Tennessee. (10/24/14)

Minnesota/Tennessee/Seton Hall/Rice/Temple/Fordham

Nwankwo is an interesting option. I have a feeling the class goes like this:

4 sign this fall: Dorsey, Jarvis, McBrayer and AI (nice class!)
In the spring they look at who may move on from the roster- if anyone and add the 5th for need. Nate Grimes is supposed to be a spring signer as are others we are following. Maybe at that point they need a SF or perhaps they are more concerned with the bigs and go that way.

Wild guess.

Whens the last time we sign 4 spring recruits?

When was the last time we signed 4 spring recruits and they showed up on campus?

When was the last time we got a class of guys we had all heard about???

This kid is happy if we can do any 3 of those.

Always hard to say from the little clip above but he appears to have a good handle from either side, good floor vision, left handed shooter (not sure why this always seems to confound defenses but it does), his passes are hitting people where they can do something with it and he has pretty good hops. Small sample but I liked what I saw.

Edit...Sorry, I clicked the wrong reply button but I am referring to Craig Randall Jr out of Shadow Mountain, AZ

Don't think I've seen it posted yet, Allonzo Trier committed to Arizona two days ago. He is only the second highest rated recruit of their 2015 class, and their third 5-star according to Rivals.

Kenny Williams is a 3-star guard that we've offered, but I haven't heard him mentioned on here in awhile. He picked up a North Carolina offer two days ago.

Jonathan Nwankwo Sets Officials to Minnesota, Tennessee, Working on Others

"The 6-foot-9, 250-pound Nigerian big man leaves Wednesday morning for his new high school, Victory Rock Prep in Sarasota (FL) after playing at Monsignor Scanlan in New York.

“It’s just a better opportunity for him from a basketball standpoint,” his guardian Derrik Riullano told SNY.tv Tuesday. “He has over a 90 average. We weren’t really concerned about his academics. He needs to get better at basketball. He needs skillwork to catch up with his body.”

Gopher Hoops Recruiting Update
"
"PF/C Jonathan Nwankwo (#212, #50 PF). Of everyone on this list, this guy feels like the most likely to be a Gopher. He just cut his list to Minnesota, Temple, Rice, Tennessee, Fordham, and Seton Hall, and is in the process of setting up official visits to see the Gophers on September 4th and Tennessee on October 11th, and has already visited Fordham (unofficially) and Seton Hall (several times unofficially). I get a good feeling about Nwankwo because I've seen a couple of places where his handlers have stressed academics, and although all the schools on his list are pretty good academically the Gophers are behind only Rice and Fordham, neither of which have any kind of basketball program, if we're being honest. Temple, Tennessee, and Seton Hall all could make argument as to the best basketball program on his list, but all rank a good way behind Minnesota academically. Nwankwo would be a pretty solid get with a Big Ten ready body with good athletic ability and a chance to be a plus rebounder and defender the minute he steps on campus. He's got some work to do on the offensive end, but if everything goes according to plan they won't need a lot of scoring from him."
