Amir was named the coveted "Best Recruit in Minnesota" by the City Pages:
Amir Coffey, University of Minnesota basketball
BEST COLLEGE RECRUIT
Hopkins High stud Amir Coffey is just what Gopher basketball needs. A lean 6-foot-7 guard, with long, long arms and a kangaroo-quick leap, he has a clockwork jumpshot that swirls gracefully through the basket. This year, he added a state championship and a Mr. Basketball title to his name, averaging 20 points a game. Big-time schools like Arizona, Michigan State, and Wisconsin bid for his services. Coffey decided to stay in the Twin Cities. Soon after, the Gophers, who were already playing terribly, suspended three of their best players for their role in a sex-tape scandal. Coffey looks like a fresh start. Maybe what the Gophers needed all along was growing up right under their noses.
