All Things 2025 Minnesota Vikings Off-Season Thread

Hopefully but there's some talk that someone like Cleveland or Tennessee might offer him a chance to start.
It could happen...lots of smoke that Carter and Hunter get drafted 1/2.

I didn't notice this when the play occurred during last years 49ers-Vikes game, but maybe the Referee should go to the NFL Combine for a tryout as punt returner or gunner at least?

Looks elite.

The move at the end where he back pedaled into the end zone would have resulted in a certain someone being gobbled up by the turf monster and taking a couple defenders with them, resulting in a dead ball whistle, for dumb azz interference by this guy @Gopher_In_NYC

This Kansas City guard we want the Vikings to get is being assaulted in this game.
From: https://www.si.com/nfl/vikings/news...rey-smith-play-in-the-super-bowl-01jkrqrjzny9

It obviously was a rough night for the Chiefs' offensive line. But what Vikings fans — and fans of numerous other teams — might care most about is the performance of right guard Trey Smith, the 25-year-old who is one of the top players (at any position) set to hit free agency next month. What role did he play in the disastrous night for the KC offense?

The answer, from looking at the Pro Football Focus grades and skimming through some of the tape, is that Smith wasn't great, but he was also far from the biggest issue for the Chiefs up front. He didn't help boost his free agent stock like the Eagles' Milton Williams and Josh Sweat did on the other side, but he also probably didn't hurt it very much. After all, this was one game against arguably the best defensive line in football, and there's an 80-game sample size of Smith mostly playing right guard at a high level.

PFF gave Smith a 63.2 overall grade (60 is considered average). That included a 49.2 mark in pass blocking and a 71.5 grade in run blocking. The bad? He was charged with three pressures, two hurries, and the first and only sack he allowed in 20 games all season. Smith also committed a holding penalty against Jalen Carter and got blown up by Nolan Smith as a puller in the run game.

The good — or at least not that bad? On a lot of reps, Smith was absolutely battling against Carter, who is already one of the best defensive tackles in the league. Carter was the Eagles' lowest-graded player on Sunday and was held to two total pressures after racking up 20 in their three NFC playoff games. The bigger issue for the Chiefs was the left side, where emergency LT Joe Thuney (who usually plays guard) allowed seven pressures and Mike Caliendo, playing in Thuney's usual LG spot, earned a 30.1 PFF pass blocking grade.

(Bold emphasis mine)

What I liked about the Eagles in the playoffs is they destroyed people. They dominated the teams they played.

I don't like them, but there was no stupid call or missed field goal to blow it. They just took people apart.

No doubt about Chiefs and Commanders. Not sure I would say that about Rams and Packers?

If Darnold is back, there's no chance. If he's not back, I think the Vikings make a strong push to bring him back and he signed with us last year for a reason IMO.

One way or another, my guess is he will be the highest paid backup QB ($10M?) in the league next year regardless of where he lands.
Not that he can't still be called a "backup" if he doesn't start even say 10 out of 18 games.

But there are some who do not think McCarthy is the Week 1 starter this year.

Health alone, there has to be some significant doubt JJM is ready by the Opener.

There's speculation Murphy Jr.'s next contract will be in the $17-20 million range.
A tough decision here for the Vikes.

There was no doubt in the packer game.

The Rams, yes, they gave them the best game.
That could well be true, but I don't think "destroyed" is correct.

Well anyway, it is correct for their last two, the two most important games.

Curious if you have any (counter)thoughts to what I posted about Trey Smith?

I have no idea where the Vikings stand on chances of signing him.

The Vikings extended the Opt Out dates with both Aaron Jones and Murphy Jr indicating that all sides want to reach a deal. They could've done this with Darnold as well but declined.

Murphy is 27 and in his prime. He's going to get paid by someone for the salary range being speculated IMO.

I thought I saw a thing on Facebook or somewhere that we were trying to get a Jets CB? It might have just been a clickbait thing though.

I was watching him on replays and regular plays and thought he was getting run by. I was doing this because I hated both teams so much.

That was just my two cents.

I don't know, the article you posted said he wasn't great, just the least of the chiefs worries. Not much of an endorsement.

I'd still take him in minute.

Great to see this commitment to the franchise/players -

For the second straight year, the Miami Dolphins and Minnesota Vikings finished 1-2 in the overall team rankings.

The Dolphins got an A+ grade in a whopping eight of the 11 categories, including head coach, ownership, food/dining area, nutritionist/dietician, locker room weight room, strength coaches and team travel. Miami received an A grade in the other three categories, training room, training staff and treatment of families. Their worst ranking in any individual category was sixth overall in head coach.

The Vikings, meanwhile, received A+ grades in treatment of families, locker room, head coach and ownership. They received an A or A- in everything else except nutritionist/dietician, which was a B+.

Sounds like the chiefs are going to place the franchise tag on Trey Smith.

* Deebo Samuel traded to WAS for a 5th Round Pick

* NYG interested in Aaron Rodgers

Good on SF to get Deebo out of the building. He didn't want to be there anymore and was becoming a distraction and certainly isn't the impact player he was in the past. Ricky Pearsall really emerging down the stretch for the 49ers definitely made this an easier move. Addition by subtraction for SF.

It could work if Darnold is serious about turning down big(ger) money to go to a franchise where he will receive much worse coaching/direction/further development in order to lose a lot more games.

He's already experienced that with two poorly run franchises. Why would he want to do that again?

If Darnold is willing to come back at $20-25M a year, you definitely have to entertain that. With how much cap we already have and how much the cap is going to increase anyway ... I don't see that as a problem.

You can't throw away the first 6-10 games of the 2025 season simply because McCarthy isn't ready yet. No way

Latter half of the season ... play the best QB. No problem.

I would rather the Vikings roll the dice with D Jones at a much cheaper number and coach him up.

That's fair but I don't personally buy that KOC has that much skill/power to "Darnoldize" anyone.

If that were true, then we could just roll with Mullens by now. Maybe DJones is good enough that it will work ... but with the cap already going up ($2X.XX million per year?) we can afford to pay Darnold $20-25M next year. I don't want to do more than that or a long term deal.

I don't want to throw away 6-10 games either. We already had our trash year two years ago, and we got our high draft pick QB out of it. Time to be winning again

FWIW -

Herbstreit was scouting the year Darnold was drafted and was surprised Baker went first instead of him - he relayed this antidote during a broadcast this year.

Jones was considered a reach by most draftnicks at 10 - certainly a better athlete than Sammy, but likely, not a better QB.

It is fascinating to see what is unfolding.

With the surrounding cast, I think the Vikings can win with Jones. I don't think they would be "throwing away" 6-10 games.
