All Things 2025 Minnesota Vikings In-Season Thread

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reports Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy (concussion) is not expected to play in Week 13 against the Seahawks.

"After another catastrophic outing in Week 12 against the Packers, McCarthy was placed in the league’s concussion protocol. Rookie QB Max Brosmer is slated to start for Minnesota against a tough Seattle defense. It’s hard to imagine Brosmer playing any worse than McCarthy has over the past few weeks. Look for the Vikings to remain a run-heavy offense in Week 13 and beyond. Brosmer should be rostered in superflex formats."

Bold not hard to imagine, because indeed Brosmer did play worse than McCarthy.

Only scoring play he was involved in was a Pick 6 for the Seahawks. 4 INTs to secure the Vikings first shutout since 2007 (@ Green Bay) with Brooks Bollinger under center.

Max had me missing JJ & Carson.

Maybe Bollinger could have gotten the Vikings on the scoreboard today. He's only 46 yrs old.

I'll be honest...much like Russini, I also didn't think Brosmer could be any worse than JJM. Not a chance. No way, no how. Impossible to be that bad.

I was wrong.

The fact that KOC never put Brosmer in when Wentz was ailing/ineffective and then outright injured should have been enough to know this was entirely possible. It certainly gave me pause, and I replied multiple times to Howeda as such weeks ago.

Brosmer having modest success against second stringers plus defenders not even making rosters back in August provided no evidence he was ready for a game against a bona fide NFL defense.

In due time, sure, he can still be a viable backup.

Lots of us were🤷‍♂️

My 87 year Mom, put it beautifully, after I tried to soft peddle the debacle, she cut me off and said -

“No, he stunk!” My old tough Slovenia broad bested me again😃 - just like always🤠

Will he get the chance?

There’s a whole new crop of Brosmer’s available every year. Maybe Mullins wasn’t thst bad after all.

Scathing article in The Athletic on the decision not to resign Darnold -

Seahawks, Vikings both made Sam Darnold gambles. Now they’re headed in opposite directions

Here’s a taste -

Head coach Mike Macdonald believes in what he saw when his team lost to Darnold last season: poise, accuracy, toughness, leadership and high-level command of the game.

The coach was asked this week why Darnold’s poor finish in Minnesota didn’t deter the Seahawks from signing him.

“It’s a little narrow-minded,” Macdonald said. “You’re just going to go off a two-game sample? When we were looking into possibly trying to get Sam, to a person, the type of player and teammate he was on a daily basis was really cool.

“Then you watch the totality of the tape — there’s a lot of great things going on in the red zone, on third down, two-minute, on the move; we know he’s a great thrower on the move. All those things shined through.”

———————————-

Tight end AJ Barner spent most of training camp telling anyone who’d listen that Darnold is one of the best quarterbacks in the world. Wide receiver Cooper Kupp was on the winning end of Darnold’s playoff debacle against the Rams, and yet he is adamant that the non-believers citing the quarterback’s final two games as their primary evidence are misguided.

“Go watch the games with a football understanding of what’s being called, what’s being done, positions that Sam’s being put in, the positions that the offense was in,” Kupp urged earlier this year. “There’s a bunch of other things going on for Sam that people don’t want to talk about because maybe you don’t understand it, it’s not as fun to talk about or it’s not as divisive to talk about.”

Blow it up. The whole thing. I know the Wilf's don't think that way, but you got to do it and suffer a couple more years. Trade everyone you can that's over the age of 28 for draft picks and start over.

Good question. Brosmer might get a chance later this year given JJM's tendencies to get injured. He could also get passed in the pecking order by a QB currently on the street.

I think at minimum he'll be on someone's Practice Squad in 2026.

The main difference between the Bears and Vikings in the NFC North this year? It ain't JJM and Caleb Williams.

The Bears are running the football, and Ben Johnson is basically deciding to not let Williams lose games for the Bears. Bears are #2 in the NFL in rush yards per game. Detroit is right behind them at #4.

JJM doesn't have a chance as long as KOC is unwilling to run the football. It's as simple as that.

Agree we have be able to run effectively, for a lot of reasons, (same is true for Gophers). Not sure if it's KOC's reluctance to run, the lack of a really good back or the o-line. Probably a combinationof above.
For the Gophers, it's clearly the o-line as PJ wants to run and Taylor is an above average running back.

One upside at least.

Dallas Turner just keeps getting better and better every week with more playing time. It has been fun watching his development and progress. He looks like he could be a really, really good player for the Vikings in the future.

I don't at all disagree with needing a more effective run game, but your last line there reads a lot like the people who were claiming Ben Johnson never had a chance to succeed as the gophers head coach due to lack of resources.

Considering how demoralizing our current QB situation is, it's hard to make an argument against this although some will try.

The hard salary cap makes it possible for any team to make a huge jump in a single season but you need to spend well, and most importantly, have a viable QB.

The KAM era needs to come to an end and nothing can change my opinion at this point. His overall horrific draft history and the collection of stiffs he overspent on this year seal the deal for me.

KOC also has some liability here but I'm not firing the waitress because the food stinks. His play calling is poor but he's more than earned another opportunity. As others have pointed out, the new GM may want his own guy, though.

Another poor GM decision by the Wilfs will only set this organization back another 3-5 years so they better get this one right, assuming they do the right thing and escort Kwesi out of the building.

they completely bungled the line this year. A rookie qb with no run game is going to get you killed. Look at Williams and the Bears last year. Ditto for Maye.

You took a qb (McCarthy) who thrived off PA and claimed you were going to shore up the line and whiffed hard. We’re still heavy skew passing and that’s on KOC to not have realized you’re putting your qb in a terrible spot continually by doing that, but unless they fix things up front you’re not going to change anything. The Darnold article is also dumb because if the OL was just as bad, he looks like shit too (like we saw him look like ass yesterday when he was under pressure).

Damn season pretty much boils down to KAM gambling on Will Fries and Ryan Kelly and they lost that gamble. Terribly. But people were crying like hell to upgrade at C from Bradbury so there you go.

If that OL gamble had paid off, as most expected, were probably not having this conversation and they're in the playoff hunt
