All Things 2024 Minnesota Twins In-Season Thread

Justin Morneau scored the winning run in the 15th inning of the All-Star Game on this date in 2008, extending the American League's unbeaten streak to 12 years.

All this talk about the draft brings to mind one of my favorite nuggets of trivia: in the 1979 baseball draft, the Royals drafted Dan Marino and John Elway. Apparently they both had plans other than a MLB career.
Elway was also drafted in the 2nd Round in 1982 by the Yankees and even played for their Oneonta affiliate (lower Class A) in the NY-Penn League. Small sample size, but he raked.

Dave Winfield (St. Paul Central '69), Jack Morris (Highland Park '73), and Paul Molitor (Cretin '74) represented the American League at the Metrodome on this date in 1985.

How remarkable is it that these three Hall of Famers were all born in St. Paul just five years apart?

Makes it easy to see why the Twins took the short term cash from BSN.

Also get some in game Advertising, but uffda, what a haircut.
They apparently have some clearance on DirecTV/Cable as well, but I'm sure they only get pennies per subscriber compared to what Bally got.

The college trend continues. Of the first 12 picks, only 1 was out of HS.
Twins ended up drafting just one HS kid out of 22 picks. Of the last 14 picks they made, 12 were pitchers. Gotta believe this was done intentionally. Position guys at the top tend to be not as risky as pitchers are.

Of note, they took a JUCO pitcher in the 11th round named Michael Carpenter from Wisconsin that had a 45 inning scoreless streak this past season. He allowed 5 runs in one game early in the season and then allowed 4 runs total the rest of the season.

OK - day 3 of the draft for the Twins - (we like tall pitchers....)

Appreciate the effort and you’re lucky there aren’t 52 rounds anymore 🥸

I think back in the day at least through the 80s, MLB Teams could keep drafting however long they wanted to.

1988, Piazza was taken by the Dodgers in the 62ND Round.
Piazza was picked as a favor; his dad was best friends LaSorda.

I was at the Subway Series in 2001 - the first game they faced each other after the World Series in 2000, where in G2, Clemens infamously threw the bat at Piazza.

Clemens was on the hill for the rematch in 2001 and Piazza launched a three run 💣 into the left field pen.

Awesome as I was never a fan of Clemens and loved Mike, like all Mets fans - perfect city for him.

Just saw Correra in the dugout, in uniform.

I wonder if they give the injured players the option to participate in that way?

Twins pick up 3B Rylan Bannon from NYM. Hopefully not a sign that Miranda and Lewis aren’t expected back anytime soon.

.254, 15 hrs, 57 RBIs in AAA this year.

No MLB ABs this year and a career.100 MLB average - 2 for 20.

I really liked Piazza too. The 2 years I was in SoCal ('96 & '97) I made it to Dodger Stadium about a dozen times, and he was fun to watch.

Late '97 he launched one into the parking lot in the LF power alley. At the time it was like Top 5 all time furthest there.

Found it on YouTube. I don't think I ever saw the replay until just now, unless I watched SportsCenter when I got home.

My boss and I had pretty good mezzanine seats, right behind the dish.

Man, he crushed that - what a powerful swing.

Piazza and Pedro both came up with the Dodgers in 92 and went on to HOF careers with other teams🤦‍♂️.
