All Things 2024 Minnesota Timberwolves Off-Season Thread

How long is Detroit pick protected? Just 2025?

Howl Wolves!!

This is critical:

Contractually, Towns is in Year 1 of a four-year, $220 million supermax extension he signed in 2022. Randle has $28.9 million and $30.9 million left on his contract, which has a player option for next season. DiVincenzo, the sharp-shooting 27-year-old who averaged 17.8 points in the playoffs this past season, has three seasons left on his contract.

Howl Wolves!!

from ESPN:

Minnesota also will receive a 2025 top-13-protected first-round pick, which was acquired via the Pistons in a previous trade.

on the surface, I like the deal. Yes, Randle had some injury issues last season, but that was the only season he has appeared in fewer than 64 games in his career. he has been more durable than KAT.

Randle: 29 yrs old. Career 19.1pts/9.4 reb. 3x All-Star, 2x All-NBA. avg 24 pts/9.2 reb last season.

DiVincenzo 27yrs old. Career 10.6 pts/4.4 reb/2.8 assist. avg 17.8 pts/gm in playoffs last year.

Towns 28 yrs old. Career 22.9 pts/10.8 reb.

Wolves add scoring and rebounding from Randle and a 3-pt shooter in DiVincenzo. look at the roster:

PG: Conley Jr, Dillingham
SG: Edwards, NAW, Joe Ingles. DiVincenzo
SF: McDaniels Shannon Jr,
PF: Randle, Naz,
C: Gobert, Garza

People seem to hate it.
I think it's good value. And I'm a big KAT fan.
Randle is a bad fit with Rudy on offense and defense, but maybe they can move him.

Donte is the main get.

The pick most likely is meaningless.

I would have liked two #1's.

I don't see the massive difference between Randle and Kat.
They aren't the same guy. But it's not that far off.

Unless Detroit somehow gets good fast, this will be a 2027 2nd rounder. Go Pistons!
Does this really turn into a 2nd round pick?! How does that happen? If so, that’s a big downside to this trade.

DET Pick Protections:

2025 - Top 13
2026 - Top 11
2027 - Top 9

*** Converts to 2027 2nd Round Pick

No value in that pick unless we use it as a trade "asset". I really like Donte but this return for an All NBA player is beyond desperate IMO.

For those that are glad to get rid of KAT because you deem him to be soft, Randle once had arena security remove a home fan because he told Julius to stop shooting so much. Yeah, mental toughness!!!

This trade indicates that Glen is highly confident that he is keeping the franchise. It's strictly a salary cap move because the team just got worse.

I wasn't opposed to trading KAT but the return made the roster clunky and diminished the wolves short term championship aspirations. Randle is an even bigger ball stopper than Ant and he doesn't play defense. Randle and Gobert will clog the middle when Ant drives. The only way it works is Naz starts and Randle comes off the bench (instant offense dude) and overlaps with Ant as little as possible. Donte is a good player but not a difference maker. As others have said, one look at Detroit's roster strongly indicates the pick will be a 2nd three years out.

The winners in this deal are Dallas, Denver and OKC.

The wolves have have one owner with money who won't spend it and another owner with no money pretending they have it to spend. (I'll believe that Bloomberg is part of their group when he announces it.)

As a casual, bandwagon wolves fan who hates the NBA as a whole my enthusiasm for this season just dropped significantly. Just like the twins off-season.

Not getting Mitchell Robinson as part of the package really leaves the Wolves with terrible depth at C considering Naz is best suited at PF.
Robinson isn’t going to be able to play until Dec or Jan, as he’s still recovering from his foot surgery -

Maybe the feel Miller can step up and be a contributor? They talked about him in that role during the summer league.

If you weren't a fan of KAT, just wait until you get an eyeful of Randle on defense.
Randle was a Dude In NYC, as he’s been there the longest and had AS creds; he’s now going to a team where he ain’t the Dude anymore, he’s more of a complimentary player now and it’s not his team - so he needs to fit in, to get in. I think he’ll de a willing defender.

Double D is an athletic freak/great defender, excellent three point shooter and was a force against the Pacers; I watched most of that series. He can also give minutes at multiple positions.

My buddy who is a huge Knicks fan, hates the deal and thinks the Knicks got fleeced. He watched multiple games every night during the season and knows as much about the Association as any fan I know.

Lastly, IIRC, most people on here weren’t enthusiastic about the Gobert trade either; I think the FO has earned the benefit of the doubt with their moves.

I don't know about Denver, but I doubt Dallas considers this a win.

The T-Wolves lost the first 3 games of the Western Conference finals by 13 points total. Towns was 15 of 54 from the field and 3 of 22 from 3 in those 3 games.

We need scoring in the playoffs. I think we get more scoring with these two guys in the playoffs.

The winner of this trade will be team where the player stays healthy.

Double D set a Knicks record with 283 made 3 last season; 241 were catch and shoot - per ESPN. That equals 3.5 per game, which was good for 4th last year in the Association. This makes him a significant difference maker.

Ant, our leader, averaged 2.4 per game, made him 44th last year.

If we had better three point shooting, we beat the Mavs. That was an obvious deficiency of ours.

We needed much better interior defense to beat the Mavs. I still have PTSD watching their centers soar for lob dunks. Donte and Randle aren't going to help with that.

Donte isn't going to have as many opportunities for catch and shoots if you have two ball stoppers (Ant and Randle).
