Below are some opinions of mine. They're probably not very good opinions.

1) "It'll happen when you least expect it". I mean ... friggin who would've thought? 12-2 on a season that was a rebuilding year throw away with a $10M failed former first rounder as backup QB and the hotshot rookie gets lost for the season. Unbelievable, no matter what what the Debbie Downer's have to say :D

2) If it were up to me (it's not), I would push the button: franchise Darnold. It buys us one more year with a guy who has more than proven himself. We'll likely need that extra year with McCarthy. I don't see a downside. I think KOC and Darnold have caught lightning in a bottle with each other. I don't think KOC is that good, meaning I don't think he can do what he did with Darnold, right over again with Danny Dimes.

3) That said, this whole year feels like lightning in a bottle. Luck largely seems to be on our side (knock on wood). Even with losing Darrisaw, they were able to go sign a replacement who is decent. Defense has been awesome. What about the no-name DL who have suddenly stepped up, even? Incredible. Detroit seems to be clearing itself out of the way with injuries. Yeah there's GB and Philly.

I'm just saying ... why not now? Just because this wasn't supposed to be the year? F it. Let's go to the Superbowl

I actually DO think KOC is that good, but yes, it's crossed my mind that the ego could factor in and they think they can work similar miracles with Jones. But the thing is, they'll have had Jones in-house long enough to have seen enough to make that kind of call by the time they need to. It would have been tougher if they had signed Jones in the offseason but having all this extra time, they should have a pretty good feel by now.

Knock on wood, hate to say it, but you can't really rule out the possibility that Darnold gets nicked up in Week 17 or 18 and Jones steps in and leads them into the playoffs. Unlikely, but it could happen
 

If both Vikes and Philly win out, sounds like strength of victory will be the determinant.
Currently Eagles lead us in that tiebreak, but there is a 98% chance we overtake the Eagles as we close the season with a tougher schedule

Thoughts on franchising Darnold to keep him here one more year, as an option opposed to signing him for 3+ years? Does Darnold even want to leave?? His first taste of success and he has to love KOC (who doesn't??)

Money talks very loudly but I can't think of any other reason why Darnold would prefer to play for another coach and organization given his success and the opportunity he has received here.

If can franchise and trade Sam, that is fine. Otherwise let him go. Main thing is to take advantage of McCarthy's rookie wage scale contract over the next 4 years.

Yes, thanks that’s I’ve been trying to communicate.

Based on the 98% the team’s were playing would each have to lose their other two games or something equally bizarre for that 2% to occur.

or
b) McCarthy and $40 million

Can buy a lot of talent for $40 million. Give me a $20 million dtackle, $20 million corner, and McCarthy please. Imagine what Flores could do if top shelf dlineman and corner were added to his group.

I am not sure what the Vikes should do, but the equation above leaves out that we don’t know what McCarthy is as a Viking and we are starting to get an idea of what Darnold is as a Viking.

The NFL has become a league where if McCarthy turns out to not be NFL material that extra 40million(that may be a little high) doesn’t mean much.

Vikes $76 million
Lions $63 million
Pack $62 million

This is the 2025 cap space for these teams. So our division rivals will be adding significantly more non QB talent than us if we keep Darnold.

Just my opinion, but I think that is a more risky path than going down the McCarthy road. As well, Darnold salary could be more than $40 mill depending how the next month or so goes.

It's not like they will roll with McCarthy and Nick Muellens. If Darnold leaves he will be replaced a competent QB looking for the same shot Darnold got, whether its Daniel Jones or someone else.

Maybe true, but we may be relying too much in the KOC quarterback whisperer narrative. That what has been done with Darnold can be done with a number of guys.

But I say all this in the interest of conversation. I am also leaning toward going with McCarthy unless there is a real sweetheart deal with Darnold which probably isn’t going to happen.
 




Calais Campbell about to be released by Dolphins? This season he has #1 pff run defense grade and #7 pff overall grade among eligible defensive linemen.

😳

I know a couple nfc north contenders who could most certainly use such a player.

The fact that Cousins went elsewhere and has not done as well plays into that narrative. I think we have good QB coaching and great WRs who get separation. We have a lot of ways to help a QB, including a good running game.

Campbell is one of the class acts in the league. The Cardinals never should have let him go years ago. Locker room leader, a real presence in the middle of your DL.

Would love to see the Vikings acquire someone like that, if for no other reason than to not let a rival pick him up for the postseason run. He'd be on a pitch count I'm sure, he's no spring chicken, but he's a beast.
 

In the context of "teams this year are paying $X for a QB, and then able to A,B,C at other positions with their remaining cap space" ....

We shouldn't be thinking of Darnold as only costing $10M this year. We should be thinking of him costing $38.5M.

How can I say that? $10M for Darnold ... and $28.5M dead money for Cousins.


That's the same as if we had a QB with a $38.5M cap hit. It works against us the same way, in terms of who else we can sign, anyway.

He’d fit right into the rotation at any of the DL spots, provide more depth and be an upgrade.
Guessing he will have his pick of which team he wants to play for. Hoping he looks at our situation and thinks it’s an ideal spot for him playing time wise, scheme and a chance to get a title.
