All Things 2024-25 College Basketball Other Games Thread

These are not the same situations at all. McNeese is headed toward possibly being ranked and getting a pretty nice seed in the tournament if they take care of business. Not the others. Maybe be open to new knowledge instead of internet tough guy trying to put everyone else down.
?????
You realize that I merely said that BGSU looked good against MSU and could contend for the MAC. That turned into you telling me how utterly wrong I was. So, take that log out of your eye before you tell me what I have done.

Purdue/Marquette looks like the only marquee matchup tonight. Pretty weak for a tuesday.

They miss Eddy, their 3PT attack is bottled up.
And Edey.

I know @SelectionSunday still feels Purdue is the cream of the B10 crop, but I have been skeptical from the start. It's not like they're a bad team - they did beat Alabama at Mackey - but they no longer have that crutch that no other team has an answer for. They don't stand above - literally - the others anymore.

If you've been paying attention to Big Ten scores, you'll know that Penn State has been blowing out opponents. Most of the opponents have been weak but they did beat VA Tech by something like 21 points.

Not so far tonight. Purdue-Fort Wayne is ahead by 6 points at half (47-41) at the half. PSU is staying in the game by going to the line. They've made 17 free throws to Purdue-Fort Wayne's 7.

Uodate: Ace Baldwin scored 10 straight points to start the second half so that P-FW lead disappeared quickly. Currently at 59-56 PSU.

Just noticed that #23 Texas A&M (Payne's new squad) is currently losing 17-31 to the (1-3) Southern Jaguars.

They are certainly not a bad team and have potential to definitely win games in March. But it was crazy how much preseason love Texas A&M got as a near unanimous top 15 team by "pundits"

Their two lead guards(1 was on 2nd and 3rd team AA list) have made literal full college careers out of launching bricks. Most of that teams identity is banking on rebounding and putting back said bricks. Bold strategy.

But they do have talent.

Checked into the game score with about 14 minutes left. A&M is shooting 28.3% from floor. That's a depth of futility that we haven't even reached this season.

Drake just beat Miami with a team of D2 and mid major transfers. Never trailed. Super impressive. It would appear their coach is much better than ours. :(
I had to look him up because this is Ben McCollum's first year at the helm in Des Moines. Holy crap - 3 national championships at the D2 level with NW Mo St. Yes, this Ben has a way better resume than our Ben, and he'll probably be a hot commodity soon if this keeps up. He is a native of Iowa City, though, so my guess is he'll be running the Hawkeyes at some point.

Gonzaga blowing the doors off Baylor doesn't seem like an aberration. Baylor does not look good. Currently down 15 in the first half to St. Johns.

Hope you kept watching. Game became entertaining chaos

Yeah, I did. Roach hits a buzzer beating three point prayer in 2OT after a St. John's player clanks two free throws with about four seconds remaining. 99-98 Baylor.

St. Joseph's and Texas Tech tied at 77 with about a minute remaining. Hawkins has been out for like six minutes or so. Lots of good games today. Love these pre-season tourneys.

The Seton Hall/VCU game had a good ending. I felt VCU kind of pissed the win away at the end of regulation.

Fun to watch forsure. Makes for an excellent week of hoops. But also very risky for the tournaments that are uneven in quality.

St Johns, VCU and Texas Tech all took pretty tough L's in terms of potential resume in pact both short and long term. Not just for the Ls themselves being bad or missing a good win. But how it changes who they play going forward as well.

I was only able to watch the last 4-5 minutes but it was entertaining. Lots of back and forth down the stretch.

Payne ended up playing just 7 minutes in the game and didn't score.

Him, Hawkins and Ola-Joseph have all seen their minutes reduced from last year so far.

Hawkins is working back from injury so that can be part of it.

But also, just kinda goes to show how bad we've been. Payne and Hawkins are now on real teams. And not teams that will run flawed players into the ground.

Drake is currently looking good against FAU.
Drake wins. It is so enjoyable to see good spacing, off-ball movement, and precise passing on offense. It's so much better than watching a person dribble and tossing up a desperation shot at the end of the shot clock.

At least JOJ is getting more minutes at Cal than he got during the latter part of last season. Recently his minutes have increased. He was averaging 10 minutes per game for their first three games but has averaged 19 minutes per game for their last two.

Last I looked Hawkins was averaging 8 point and 8 assists in 19 minutes of play! My guess is that he will be averaging 25-30 minutes soon.

I've been a McCullum fan for a while. If you get a chance, read up on him and his coaching/teaching philosophies.

Know you don't hire a D2 coach to run a Power 5 program, but if you're going to reach, you might as well reach for somebody with successful head coaching experience. If you can coach, you can coach.

That's why I like Plitzuweit in the woman's program. She played under Kevin Borseth who had a great DII career, winning at Michigan Tech, then going to Green Bay and on to Michigan. Those coaches cut their chops teaching the game first, and recruiting talent that wants to be taught the game. That's why Plitzuweit is a great hire.
We need a coach like McCullum.
