All Things 2024-25 College Basketball Coach Fired/Hired/Retired Thread

The seal has been broken. No more waiting for season to end
No excuses Coyle. Git er done
When coach says in presser, "Yes" to I've talked to NCState and then smirks, saying we are transparent with players, it's out of them bag.

They can still play well and focus on the tournament because a number of them likely plan to go to NCState or other places after the season.

It says a lot about the school and tradition of excellence. They fell off big-time after Jay Wright, but still a highly coveted job.
Porter Moser for Villanova is crazy. OU was ready to run him out of town 3 weeks ago.

He's still highly thought of for sure. It's just one player but he/his staff pulling Jeremiah Fears out of Illinois was something. That kid is great.

He's a mixed bag for sure. No NCAA appearances his first 13 years as a coach and got fired by Illinois State. Then an amazing run at Loyola. Then a very slow start at Oklahoma that nearly got him fired a second time.

They've had remarkably good luck with coaches over the years although Jay Wright probably was the best. They were due for some poorer luck and the fired coach was there for only 3 years.

.633 winning percentage in three years and three NCAA tournament appearances. Having said that, I'm a bit surprised that a program with their expectations hired Terry in the first place. He was decent at Fresno State but mediocre at UTEP. The Minnesota program has its drawbacks but the one thing we do have in our favor is that we're likely to give a new coach some breathing room.

Texas was backed into a corner with Terry when they had to dismiss Beard and he became interim. He had a good season and it would have looked terrible to let him go after that.

I expect McCollum would be a good candidate at Texas. It would be delicious to keep seeing Iowa’s candidates get taken off the board, but they probably end up no worse than Henderson when the music stops.

Right now I would say this is a better job than Iowa from the standpoint of attracting a new coach.
Like us, they are not resource rich and they have almost everyone either out of eligibility or in the portal. Unlike us, they just fired their career leader in coaching wins.

Media sources who are frequently correct are saying it’s Sean Miller to Texas. Sean knows big money basketball and would be a good fit in the SEC.

My UTEP friend called the game last night a "Terry Special" lol. He wasn't surprised.

Yeah, but I still have hope that what actually happens is something that makes Iowa fans upset.

Huh???? How does that clip indicate that he was saving his kid for next season at Indiana???
It doesn't, it's clickbait, all it says is that he was talking with Indiana during the season at some point but pushed back to let him focus on the season there before finalizing any process. This isn't Will Wade agreeing to terms while his team is still in the tournament.

So Sean Miller leaving Xavier, to go to the team they just beat last night. Has that happened before in the tourney?

This is the latest conspiracy theory rolling out of WV fans.

Was just talking to a WV alum in a meeting this afternoon, and they are thinking that Devries and Indiana had an agreement during the season, so Devries sat his son with a mysterious “upper body injury” so he could get a year at dads new job.

Hire the Drake coach! Much better than Niko
Honest question, what makes you say that? Niko has made D1 tournament 3 of the past 4 years and won a the MWC once. McCollum has made the D1 tournament once and won his conference once. Has a lot of success at the D2 level certainly and seemingly is getting that at D1 but saying he's "much better" seems like pretty profound recency bias and the known being scarier than the unknown. Fact is McCollum is still green at D1 and while he certainly could be great, that's far from a given, Niko's got a lot going for him with his experience and success. I'd be fine with either, but to say one is much better is wild to me.

Niko has won a tournament but not a conference regular season. McCollum has 4 national titles to go along with conference titles. His pedigree is obvious he is a winner much like the football coach Indiana hired last year. Drake is a very difficult team to play the way they play. Do you think Niko could have beat Missouri with Drake's personnel or even with CSU' s group. Not from what I've seen.

>McCollum has 4 national titles to go along with conference titles.

At the D2 level, while the coaching is impressive and again, I'd be just fine and excited about him as a coach, it's a totally different ballgame. We have no idea what his recruiting acumen is for top tier talent and like it or not, as PJ says, that's the lifeblood of a program.

>Do you think Niko could have beat Missouri with Drake's personnel or even with CSU' s group.

I truly do not know, I think it's possible absolutely.

Again to be clear, I'd be happy with either, my assertion is that saying one is obviously so much better than the other seems ridiculous with the knowledge we have on each.
