All Things 2024-25 College Basketball Coach Fired/Hired/Retired Thread

Where's Ben going to land? Villanova? West Virginia? He's a great coach who just needs resources right?
I think the copium on Ben Johnson has worn off. Everyone knows at this point he was an abject failure, whether they are willing to admit that out loud or not. No logic used to defend him can withstand even the smallest levels of scrutiny.

I know you’re joking but if I was a program looking for an assistant coach I’d take a hard look at Ben. I think he actually has a good eye for talent, probably his best attribute as a coach. Last years Gopher team was one of the most talented in the Big Ten. It’s an indictment of his in game coaching and general ability to lead a program that he couldn’t get that team into the tournament. He was obviously in way over his head as a head coach in the Big Ten but as an assistant I think he could be a good option.

Ben will definitely end up as an assistant somewhere. It's just a matter of when.

One of the most talented teams in the conference last year is quite an overstatement. Better talent than this year, but I would struggle making a case for it being top half of the conference talent last year.

They had 4 guys, Garcia, Christie, Payne, and Hawkins that would have played significant minutes for most teams in the league. Lack of talent wasn't the issue, coaching was.

Would you say PJ Fleck underachieved with the 2018 football team, barely making a bowl game with a roster that had Rashod Bateman, Tyler Johnson, Chris Autman-Bell, Antoine Winfield, Carter Coughlin, Rodney Smith, Shannon Brooks, Mo Ibrahim, Terrell Smith, Esezi Otomewo, Coney Durr, Seth Green, Blake Cashman, John Michael Schmitz, Boye Mafe, Daniel Faalele, etc.? Is it reasonable to believe that that talented roster might improve and achieve greater heights in the future with more experience and time playing together? If all those players transferred out to get more money, we went 6-6 again in 2019, and 10 of them later ended up in the NFL, would that be proof that PJ Fleck blew it and mismanaged a talent rich roster?

If you believe we had the talent to beat North Texas, Washington, Penn State, and Northwestern at home, I won't argue too much. Also if we had the money to retain the talent we had previously brought in, we might have won those games that way too.

Poor Ben.

The old saying that winners never cheat and cheaters never win does not apply to major college athletics
So much for the being "grateful" for opportunity to return to Xavier lol

Texas chimes in quickly:

Go Gophers!!
If people like Hallman want to make their case about black coaches being given a short leash, he should look at a situation like this in Texas where the coach is fired after 3 years when all 3 years resulted in a trip to the NCAA tournament.

Trajectory was going in wrong direction but still feels like a pretty quick hook (pun intended).

Your way of defining GWG's pettiness?

No counter argument I see. Not interested in acknowledging the challenges of the job, just bashing the coach.

One counter argument is that you've presented exactly why PJ is still here and Ben isn't.

PJ has mostly retained his roster, with relatively few devastating departures. Guys had a chance to leave for more money, but two things happened. Many chose to play for PJ anyway, passing on the extra cash. And, PJ went out on his own fundraising mission and gathered over two-dollars to help keep Koi Perich, Anthony Smith, and others.

Ben Johnson had neither of those things happen (although to his credit, Dawson Garcia passed up more money to stay and play for Ben, which thank God).

The difference is you listed out about 50% of the starters needed to field a competitive football team, where as the post you responded to mentioned 80% of the starters needed to be a competitive basketball team. You also need to go 2 deep in football due to more injuries, where as in basketball you just need to find 7-8 guys who can play.

PJ has been able to keep his teams together despite better NIL offers. Ben proved he is incapable of doing that. Niko isn't swimming in NIL at Colorado St, but he has been able to recruit and keep a lot of talent there for multiple years. That's why he has been successful.

With Niko in place, the Gophers will no longer have 90% roster turnover every season and the NIL excuses will start to disappear.

What pettiness? All I heard from the local media and several in the national media that Ben is a great coach and has done a great job at the hardest major conference job out there. Why isn't he a candidate for other jobs?

I'll think he'll try his hand as an NBA assistant for his next stop.
Why would any NBA team be interested in him as an assistant? As best I can tell, X's and O's are not his strength. His main, and perhaps only, value is as a recruiter.

I think he underachieved with that group. Heck, I'll bet he'd tell you that himself in a candid moment.

I think he is going to hold out for a head job at a lower level. That's his best bet and there will be plenty that will open up.

My wife just tells me that she got a flash on her phone that the Hawks and McCollum have taken a turn and the school and the coach are not as close to a deal as has been reported. Des Moines Register reporting. Is this true???

From what I've seen of the Register reporters, they're saying it's not done yet but could come together fast. He's been focused on Drake. Odds are still good it's him.

Nothing on X or their website as far as I can see
